Spent the night at the ER

Had to take our son to the ER last night, been there a few times in the past as he has been constipated. He eats well and drinks tons of fluids but for some reason he holds it in and becomes constipated. Well, we noticed he wasn't eating like he should ( normally eat anything offered to him but lately declining everything ) so even with normal dosages of OTC meds the doctors prescribed he has become constipated again, this time was severe. His stools were rock hard, and this time was worst than any other time as there was some bleeding, so off to the ER again.
He developed a few anal fissures ( very tiny and not a concern for any surgery) but he was treated and we were given some new prescribed medicines to give him and hopefully stop the constipation streaks....
They said it was normal in infants, but in my 45 years this is the first I have seen. I hate seeing him in pain, and I hope this will be the last of it for him with the new meds. They said because it hurts, he is afraid to go and holds it...so now its going to be a little bit of a mental challenge to reverse that mentality. It was nice to get to the er and go straight in as there was no one there at 2am, we got back home at 8am, so it has been a long night.
 
I had pain since I had kidney stone in 2011 and I'm spent hospital till after 4-5 am in ER include catscan but I had hard walk back and forth to bathroom but my kidney stone looks fine now but I'm almost killed myself and I'm nearly died also but I got found urology dr in my home from my primary dr and remove piece of stone but I can't drink pop soda or tea anymore but I can drink water follow dr says I can drink iced coffee from Starbucks.Sometimes I do drink sprite and lemonade not often but no sparkling for me because I'm on kidney stone currently..
 
my daughter had the same i took her to hospital many times she ended up with surgery (malone procedure or ACE meaning appendic ceacal exit.google it.It worked.failing that get lactolose it taste like concentrated sugar but do the trick..
in child this condition is not funny and should be taken seriusly as consquences not nice
 
Sorry to hear it, Sono....peanut butter does that to me...maybe a soft diet would help somewhat.

As for myself, I take Phillips Milk of Magnesia (cherry flavored) once or twice a month. It softens the bowels and makes "going" a breeze....

yea I know the feeling... I finally shat a rock-hard turd couple weeks ago. I didn't shit for a few days and I knew it was gonna be a bad one. then finally one day.... whew.... it was quite laborious.

just remember to eat more fibers! oatmeal's the best and simplest.

Long long long time ago when I was a kid - I had a same problem. My parents took me to family doctor and the doc just injected some liquid stuff into my ass.

wait few minutes.... and then take a dump.

Enema...yup, we just got done doing that. All the hard lumps are out of his belly and we don't feel any more lumps pushing on his belly, so I think he is cleared out now. He is taking a prescribed form of Miralax now, we are supposed to give him the max dosage for a week and slowly taper it off over a month... more or less make him have diarrhea so his colon will shrink back to normal and he should be good after that. He is a lot more active and eating pretty good tonight already. He was backed up pretty good... amazed at how much a little guy can hold.
 
:ugh3: I hate fecal convos and all...... but, I know all the siblings I had all had this same issue. It was because firstly bottle fed babies are far more prone to constipation than breast fed ones. ( Not sure if you guys breast feed or not ) Secondly, the formula was being made incorrectly and they weren't following the directions very specifically. Too much powder ( even a little too much ) and too little water can mess them up pretty bad with that stuff. :( *Thankfully I was the breast fed one yay me!* Also, it could be some minor allergy response. Hope he feels better soon!
 
I am sorry to hear that. while it is not very likely, it still is -
gluten intolerance. nowadays, more and more children suffer from celiac
or inability to digest gluten.

You say he is an infant, so I figure he might be breastfeed. while I am not sure if there is connection mother's milk/baby I believe better safe than sorry

here's the thing - although celiac in children usualy - USUALY manifest as diarrhea,
it can also show as constipation. Proof - my very friend"s little granddaughter whom developed fissures and hence, painfull movement,
and because of all that - refusal to void, severe constipation, rock hard stools. It"s and ugly disease because it mostly scares them (kids) thus cause mental anguish, is very difficult to diagnose
but at least you can see if there is any improvement by COMPLETELY AVOIDING
any GLUTEN products

bear in mind, also, that gluten is being added to a plethora to a food products that normally does not contain it, a tea for example may very well have it

so if you infant son is say (hopefully NOT) severely gluten intolerant, then you won't even know if he and his mother are ingesting gluten even if excluding
any grains from their diet.

but I digress - by avoiding any gluten for a few months, you will see if there is an improvement or not. If there isn"t, then maybe it's not it.

I had the problem as a child and was found to have coeliac and once I was put on a coeliac diet, I was fine. It was hell for like 2 years and at first the docs only wanted me on medication (can't spell the name of the medication but it wasn't nice stuff)
 
young kids can be born with hypotonic mucles not uncommon in adults it redundent colon(bits of it)if dr just keeps doing enema or what ever then insists on admission for child have proper bowel clearing and training...i speak from great experience and so wish i did not....my daughters shitting problems were pain of my life for over 11 years,she was diagnosed with hershbrungs after 9years uncommon with girls...
for myself i had extended colectomy...had baruim enema took three months get it out of body that really was shitting a brick that is constipation.
i sure with all advice what with celiac checks etc etc you find out problem but most proberly the child had bit of pain when going to loo and from that he held on to it just making condition worse
 
When my sister's daughter was a baby she got terribly constipated and was given Unsulphured blackstrap molasses . A little was put in a bottle with breast milk. And this helped a lot. Some stupid person told my sister molasses was bad for baby teeth and my stopped giving it her baby and she got constipated again , then my sister realize her baby has NO teeth yet.
 
Our son was breast fed, he wouldn't take a bottle. But he is 3 now and drinks from cups and straws. He is healthy and doctor says he is getting plenty of everything. States he might have had a painful poo and started holding it back, just making it worst over time. So now that he is cleaned out, he shouldn't have any more issues.
