The matter is about giving greater control and choices for those who may need their retirement supplements/benefits later on in life.

just so you know - Social Security is to pay for unemployment benefit, disability, medicaid, medicare, and SSI.

Questions like this are why it's so hard to reform entitlements. People who talk about reform have to put up with this sort of moral exhibitionism.

and beside - what are you whining about? a small piece of your pay goes to Social Security and you'll still have PLENTY enough for your 401k investment (OPTIONALLY). In the end when you retire, you'll reap in your 401K plus Social Security. As far as I'm concerned - Social Security is continuing to pay back and will continue to pay back.

It's not a small piece of my pay. I would be tens of thousands of dollars richer right now if I could invest my money how I wanted. As far as I'm concerned, I'm looking forward to a very crappy return on investment from social security. I earned that money, not you, and not society at large, and I believe I should invest it as I desire.

Before you or others accuse me of being miserly or uncharitable, I can guarantee I voluntarily give a far higher percentage of my income than the Barack Obamas, Joe Bidens, and Al Gores of the world who love to campaign on forcefully taking from one and giving to another in the name of compassion.

Like I said - the worrisome projection is just an estimation. Yes at this current pace - people within my generation will not see a dime. We obviously are not going to stay on that fixed path and let it happen. We will do something about it. That's the beauty about this country being fluidic. We adapt and response.

I hope we do adapt and quickly. As I said, the sooner we scale back Social Security and Medicare, the less drastic the reform will have to be.

Something has to be done...we are just about broke. The government has no way to make up the difference. It's either raise taxes or invest whats left and stop borrowing from it.

Well, I'm seeking for democrats to reform the SS so I don't trust any conservative that would be done to SS, including privatization because I don't know any reform by conservative could cause me to lose the SSI benefit that I need money to survive since I can't get job and be full-time student at same time.

Scholarships. Bursaries. Student loans. Part-time jobs. Grants. Churches.

My education was paid for by the Legion. Never had to rely on the government.

I know of someone that worked 2 jobs and went to school full time and he was studying to be a lawyer. I see you are Alldeaf all the time. I think you may just need to manage your time better between work and school instead of playing online all the time and you would be able to work and go to school.

That is also my problem, I am learning to manage my time better and not spend as much time online like I used to. I know I will have to do even better if I go back to school.

Sorry but that is not the purpose of SSI. The federal government provides student loans. Those who can't get loans should consider a lesser study load.

I had done to be part time job and full time student so too much time for me to do so I decided to quit job because of want focus on education, even I have alot of issues with managers at wal mart so not worth it. It is my business to focus on education and rely on SSI to support my life.

Like I said, not everyone has part time job and be full-time student at same time, even some people couldn't handle to have job while full-time student.

College is VERY VERY VERY DIFFERENT from high school.

I guess foxrac doesn't realize that the ORIGINAL intent/purpose of the SS Act does not provide for people like him, Yizuman, etc. No offense to these people; its the folks in Washington who messed this one up real bad.....most of these designers are probably dead now too, and yet, the current lot there now are too afraid to restore it AND/OR find something else to cover said people because it is now such a huge beast! No one who counts in D. C. can now see the forest for the trees!
