So I'm thinking of moving to Delaware...

It kinda depends on the value of your home in most of SoCal.
Not sure about Norcal, never talked or looked into owning property there.

Here, in Los Angeles county, it is usually 1.xx% of your home's value depending by the city.
For ex Beverly Hills can be 1.08%, Arcadia (where Marlee lived) can be 1.10%
A lot of the average homes are worth ~500k for 2 story homes, single story homes are like 300-400k.

So with Marlee's home sold at $899,000, whoever owns it now is paying $9899 a year for property tax.

Didn't mean to hijack your DE thread into a CA thread, Alex! :P

Speaking very generally, living in the right place for you vs. living in the wrong place for you can make a HUGE difference in your enjoyment of life. ("You" in the general sense, not referring to any one person in particular.)

People have different priorities, and at different times in one's life those priorities might get re-arranged. Some people want to be near family, regardless of cost; some people want to live in a low-cost place regardless of absence of family, cultural activities, airports nearby, etc; some people want to live where there is a lot going on culturally and have easy access to transportation, and so on. Some people care about being near good schools; others, with no children, don't care about the schools but want to have convenient local transportation options.

Sometimes you just fall in love with a place and have to live there, no matter what.

My favorite place to live, ever, was Boston, and I'm so glad I lived there for a few years at the right time in my life. But at this point, I wouldn't think of moving back there - too cold, too expensive, for starters. Not a good fit for me now.

So, getting back to you, Alex, what about Delaware appeals to you besides the low property taxes? Probably there needs to be more to it than that to make it a good overall fit for you and your family.

You and me both about Boston. I lived there for FREE for 4 months and I loved it but wouldnt move there for the very same reasons as you stated...too cold and too expensive.

As for the rest of this post...you hit the nail on the head several times over.

I have no regrets of not moving back to Arizona like I planned when my ex and I moved to MD so I could go to grade school. The plan was for me to go to grad school for 2 or 3 years and then move back to AZ but I just absulotely fell in love with the East coast and ended up staying here. Despite my family living in AZ and my daughter being there, I have absulotely no desire to move back to AZ. Yes, the cost of living is high here but the lifestyle here fits me perfectly. Maybe later, when I get older, I will change my mind.

Not with those forecloses homes here in S.Calif and N. Calif. A lot of them are so cheap right now so it is best time to buy them. A house across from us, is in foreclose and it sold for 59,000. Many houses are on the way to forecloses in my town. My sister and brother are buying couple houses up in N. Calif for cheap too. My house is not worth much either, only expensive houses u can find is in Hollywood or SF.

Right, I talked about the property taxes. I wish to buy a foreclosed house in OC but I am sure that the property taxes are too high. High property taxes will not fit my future pension.

One of my Uncles lived in DE for quite a while. He's not there now only due to certain family and medical issues that made him move. He totally loved it. His first and second ex-wives still live there, third ex-wife is with him in IN.

Delaware is beautiful, but nothing is there.

I am thinking of moving out of NJ as well.. to MD/DC, Northern CA, or Phoenix area, AZ. Change of scenery.

I don't know much about Delware nor visit there before. NJ's tax property is pretty expensive. Where I live here in Ann Arbor.. is $4,500 for tax property

I heard that Delaware has appointed an official Ambassador to Mars to handle the potential influx of martian tourists. That alone has to be a huge draw for that state. :giggle:
