CHICAGO (May 20) - Bob Levan bought season passes to Six Flags Great America for his daughters and their best friend, but he is worried he won't be able to ride the roller coasters with them because he is a convicted sex offender.

Six Flags added wording on the back of season passes to all 30 of its U.S. amusement parks this year stating that it reserves the right to refuse entry to anyone convicted of a sex crime.

The amusement park said it does not actually plan to run background checks on everyone entering the park, but visitors seen acting inappropriately could be subjected to a check and thrown out.

Still, the warning was enough to concern Levan.

''My 13-year-old girl read this on the back of the pass and said, 'Now Daddy, does this mean you can never take me to Great America?''' he said. ''I am 350 percent for protecting children, and that just bugs me.''

Debbie Nauser, a spokeswoman for Oklahoma City-based Six Flags, said the wording provides ''an extra level of protection'' for park visitors and was done on the advice of the company's outside attorneys.

In 2000, a 19-year-old ride operator at Great America in Gurnee was sentenced to four years in prison for molesting three girls while strapping them into Yogi Bear's Yahoo River boat ride. The arrest spurred a lawsuit that resulted in $1.4 million payments to two of the victims.

Amusement parks have long reserved the right to throw out anyone misbehaving. But Six Flags is the first chain of U.S. amusement parks to specifically state on its tickets that sex offenders can be denied entry or removed, said Beth Robertson, a spokeswoman for the International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions.

''This is not anything really different,'' she said. ''All it does is really clarify their language.''

Levan was convicted of molesting an 8-year-old relative when he was 16. He served a brief jail sentence and underwent treatment in a mental health facility. Now 35, the divorced information technology worker is raising a family in suburban Chicago.

Andrea D. Lyon, president of the Illinois Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, complained that the language sends the message that sex offenders are social outcasts despite whatever steps they may have taken to rehabilitate themselves.

''It just seems to me that - to some degree - it's public grandstanding to make people feel like Six Flags is safe: We can send our kids there because they are going to throw out the sex offenders,'' Lyon said. ''If they are not going to do a background check on everyone walking through the door, what's the point?''

I am glad to see Six Flags doing something about Sex Offenders even through they do not background check, But I think it's better than nothing. :thumb:

Wow that is very interesting.

On another note, it is sad that there are sex offenders everywhere you go. There has been incidents of sex offenders trying to lure young girls to go into restrooms and molest them during coffee getogethers at local churches here. That really pisses me off! Not even safe at churches while parents are a few feet away, chattering with other members while their kids might get molested in bathrooms!!!

:madfawk: to these sick, digusting peverts.

Yes; I agree Meggie, ;) I don't let my youngest son go in the men's room, only women room with me. But oldest son knows about the inappropriately touching and I told him to scream as loud as he could so people can hear him and go in the men's room and see what's going on. Sex Offenders are everywhere, It's unbeliveable.

It's sad that things have gotten so bad that this has to happen. But, it is necessary because look at how many are repeat offenders. At least this is another step in trying to make things better.

Hope that the next step will be castration of their penises. I mean it! I am really fed up with repeat offenders. They could do thousands of hours of therapy or support group, etc yet their penises still control their impulses. Just castrate it and they cant do anything about it! :squint:

Yes, I wholeheartedly agree with you. I know that it sounds really mean to some out there but things have really gotten out of hand as far as all the children getting hurt by these sick demented individuals.

Wow that's really interesting, I didn't even know they had start doing that, When I buy tickets this summer I will look in the back to see if they do that here in Ohio....

I am personally in favor of legalized castration of child molesters and rapists.

We had a registered sex offender living down the street from me. I was unaware of his criminal past until I received a call from a friend and neighbor one day, telling me she had done a search for registered sex offenders in the area and his name and picture came up. I immediately contacted the man's wife (since they were recently married and she has a young daughter, I did not know if SHE was aware of his past). I asked her if there was any reason for me to be concerned, since I too have young children. She told me not to worry, that they would be moving by the end of the month. It seems they had received numerous complaints from other parents in the neighborhood, not just me. Until they were gone, my children were not allowed to play near their house, but the woman's daughter was welcome to come to our house and play anytime she wanted. I'm rather glad we ran him off from the neighborhood. I think we all need to be aware of what and who are children are being exposed to.

My oldest is 10 yrs old and He is aware of a lots of things I let him go alone in the men room because women don't like it when older kids go in women's restroom they give you "the looks". I started letting him go when he was 9 years old after I told him what he need to know. I get scare at times when he goes in the men's room alone. But I told him if he was not out of the bathroom within 5 mins. that's when I go in. I care less what men would think of me. :giggle:

Nope, It never happened, But I dunno about the age, It's up to each parent how they feel about their own child(ren) if they feel ready to let the child(ren) go in the men's room alone or with their father, It's up to them, But they should teach their children about dangerous through. :)

Castration of the penises? What about the women? Castrate their clit or sew their lips shut?

What about that Seattle teacher (a female) seduced a boy?

It may not be that often for boys to admit being molested by older women compared to others. dunno.... :dunno:
