since everyone is doing all these "ask me anything" threads...

Serious question—maybe you could tell us a little bit about what it’s like to be a relay operator. I know, that’s a lame way of phrasing the question, but I think you know what I’m trying to get at. Like, do you get a lot of crank calls? Do you get a lot of calls, or do you just sit around most of the time? What’s the hardest part of the job? How much does it pay? What are the qualifications? How would you rate the job on a scale from zero to ten, with zero being ‘blows donkey’s balls’ and ten being ‘best job in the known universe’?

now this question i like

overall i enjoy my job. i enjoy being that link of telephone communication for the deaf community, it brings me alot of satisfaction. but there are several bits about the job, that just make me want to lash out. mostly pranks and scams. prank calls are just ridiculous, and piss me off more than anything. it really amazes me how many american teenagers have no conscience. its really hard and difficult to say how many prank or scam calls i process for every real deaf user call, but it is far more than it should be. my pay rate is 10 an hour. the certification process goes like this: typing test (60 wpm), written test (ethics and job description), and then calling processing test (a practice call). like i've said before, any crackhead that walks through the door can get a job. i do work most of the time. such as during weekdays, mid day, i get back to back calls, and it slows down at night, and on the weekend, so i may have a minute or 2 in between calls, i get paid 10 an hour to sit on my ass and type all day. seems like it'd be the greatest job in the world. but dealing with the scams and pranks, and not being able to do much about it is frustrating. i also feel that management could do more to help us with this, but are ignoring us. i'd give the job an 8. its a very easy job, but because of abuse, it can be difficult on your conscience.

That would be the first time I've actually seen a relay operator posting in a deaf forum. :giggle:

Anyway, Have you ever got any calls that were weird, Like example a deaf person made you feel uncomfortable when cussing and you have to be able to reply that message how did that feel, if you ever had that experience before?

My hearing friend loves to use the relay service, and she would use my TTY to call relay and leave a nasty message on her own celluar phone just to see if the relay operator would relayed the exact message and it turn out that the relay operator did it and It became funnier listening to it, So she says.
This is what she said " Once I was 23 years old, My whole family fucked me under the Christmas tree included Grandpa and our family dog, What a Christmas that anyone would want..." And the relay operator was saying at the end of relaying the message that "I cannot believe this person!" :laugh2:

i cant go into details, but there have been a few occassions where i've gotten frustrated like that. i never ever have a problem with cussing or helping to express the deaf users anger. i actually enjoy it when i get to go off on someone. id encourage it more. the only problem i ever have with actual deaf users is when someone gets hung up on, and they ask us to redial, especially when the voice user is really pissed off.

i have no gripe with anyone leaving a nasty message as long as theyre deaf. i hate hearing people that use relay service. 1. it ties up the line, and makes the wait longer for actual users to make their call and 2. relay was not intended for them. at the rate which relay is abused, i expect some severe consequences for everyone in the future.

as far as perverted and racist messages, i've heard them all

I think I know what you mean—I think I remember reading somewhere that you can’t refuse to relay a call even if it’s an obvious prank or scam. No matter what the message is, you’re legally obligated to transmit it, right?

Correct.

It really makes me hate the youth of America. Especially when I see idiots posting on message boards about it, thinking its the funniest thing ever.

I am trying to think to ask you questions but seems alot already got mine!

since you have dogs.. one of them is dalmation... wondering, did you raise from a puppy.. I am aware of that dalmation is hard to handle at their young age till around 3-4 years old.. finally settle down.. they are very hyper...

:)

Well its actually my step father's dog, but since we moved in, I claim her as my own. She's 13 years old. Yeah, she's pretty same now. She is partially blind and deaf, and has arthritis. You have to feel sorry for the poor thing. Funny story. My step dad was telling me when they first picked her out of the litter; the first puppy they had picked turned out to be deaf (30 percent of dalmation's are born deaf), so they went back and picked out Mattie (short for Haz-Mattie :dunno: ) when they found out. Kind of sad, but hey, I love the dog.

I don't understand this. I just finished up a terp program. If I wanted to call the lab or one of my Deaf teachers, I used (NEVER abused) relay. It was quicker than e-mail and sometimes e-mails would get accidentally deleted. What's wrong with that??

I meant a hearing person calling a hearing person. Not a hearing person calling a deaf person.Nothing is wong with that.

The people. This is definetely the most friendly forum I've ever posted on. Everyone here is very helpful.

What you like about yourself?
that is hard to say without coming off arrogant, if i had to say anything, it'd be my way of thought.

What you hate about yourself?
im pretty self conscience of my physical appearance, at times, um, my motivation, and my ego can get out of control at times

What´s your dream partner?
someone not concerned about what people think of her, someone with a good sense of humor, and likes me for me and doesnt expect me to change

Long long time ago. When I was about 6 or 7. Long before I moved to Memphis. Now that I live in Memphis, Graceland really has no meaning. To every Memphian, Graceland is nothing exciting, but to tourists, its a must see. Go figure. :dunno:
