'Jimmy Ryce Act' Hearing Continues On Thursday

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- A convicted sex offender who has served his time in prison wants to be released from court-ordered supervision, but prosecutors argue that it's just a matter of time before he attacks another child.

James Brown has served 13 years in prison, but the state is using the Jimmy Ryce Act -- named for a boy killed by a sex offender just out of prison -- to keep him in civil confinement for mandatory medical supervision.

Under that law, sex offenders like Brown who have served their time must be reviewed by several agencies, as well as state attorneys to determine whether or not they should be released, or whether they're still a threat to the public.

Prosecutors said Brown victimized eight young boys prior to his conviction in 1997. At a hearing Wednesday, the state put five of those victims on the witness stand, along with two psychologists who testified that Brown is a pedophile, has refused treatment while in prison, and is very likely to offend again.

Brown's lawyer only called one witness to talk about probation.

The hearing continues on Thursday.

You know this is always what every criminal wants...to go free. :roll: whether they care about what they done or not.
 
If he refused treatments then he shouldn't be allowed back in the society. I hope they denied his requested.
 
It seems most likely that they will deny it for releasing him so let's see.
 
No..he needs to be locked up for the rest of his life. Come on..multiple victims? Fat chance in hell that he is reformed!

I'm sorry, but this guy is beyond fucked up, and has proved he cannot function in society.
 
he served the time the judge gave , he needs to be let go, if its anyones fault blame the judge for only giving him 13 years lets do some math 13 divided by 8 hmmm only a year and a half for each boy way to go judge good solid case. now because of the judges incompetent this pedophile will go free and you right I doubt hes reformed.
 
What is the matter with this system. Those EIGHT boys, not one not three, not even five but EIGHT innocent little boys are going to deal with this for the rest of their lives. No court can 'set them free'...they will have to do it themselves, and that will be much harder. This man does not deserve to be parole, supervised or otherwise. He refused treatment, for pete's sake. This makes me so mad...and scared too. I have a beautiful baby girl...with people like this allowed to contend supervision after having attack eight seperate children, how can this world be safe for her?
 
I say he should remain in prison for another 13 years because he refused treatment in prison and the psychiatrists have said he is not rehabilitated and should not be allowed to leave prison. Request for release: DENIED

Well, he has served the sentence he was given. They can't hold him any longer than that. They are doing the only thing available, and that is to keep him under supervision.

thanks God for Jimmy Ryce Act! We both know that they're most likely going to be a repeated offender.
 
*shrugs* Even if he was released, I bet some people will go after him and attack him.
 
No sex offender should ever go free. They do not deserve to. The children they have victimized has suffered beyond belief and for this they should spend the rest of their lives in prison. I hope they drop their soap all the time.
