Last night, my hearing dog, Snickers, was attacked at the dog park next to the Minneapolis International Airport by a Boxer, the left tip of her left ear bit off; the owner no where to be seen. I called for the owner, as he/she didn't come running after their dog. I was assaulted by the owner's son after I saw that Snickers retreated to our car, bleeding profusely. This morning, after a late night surgery, she is doing better, but, as a service dog, is out of commission until this thing clears.

I called the police after it happened and about four squads came with red lights and siren on. One cop even got out of his car with his shotgun, so that was reassuring to me that they took this seriously. Pictures were taken by them.

Unfortunately, no one was arrested, as of yet. When I get the police report, I am looking into not only filing assault charges, but also a possible lawsuit against the owner. I'd also like to know how many other times this dog has attacked and injured other dogs.

I thought I'd post this and share with all of my friends here on alldeaf.com.

whoa damn, I am so sorry to hear that! I can't believe the owner's son assaulted you! The owner and his son should have been arrested that night and if their dog have done this to other dogs.. then it should be put to sleep immedity! I hope that your dog are ok. Do you have any injuries?

Poor Snickers! I will pray that she has a complete and quick healing, and that she doesn't have any permanent problems as a result of this attack.

It must have been frightening for both of you.

I hope you can get things resolved without too much hassle.

The guy grabbed me from behind and had his arm around my neck. I felt a little sore and the police asked if I needed medical attention, of which I said I didn't.

I'd hold off on putting the dog down until we learn whether or not it has attacked other dogs.

There was concern that the dog had caused another injury on top of Snickers head, but the vet tech looked at the area (think they shaved it to check) and there weren't any bite marks.

I hope so, too. I didn't have pepper spray on me at the time, so this is something I need to pick up. I'd rather carry this than a side arm, for obvious reasons.

Ouch, that's crazy. I'm glad that your dog is alright. They should know better with their own dog, but let's see what the policeman say about their dog if it did attack another dogs, not just your dog. :ugh:

But I felt bad for that dog if it's true about that dog did attack another dogs, not just your dog then they will might force their dog to put in sleep, hate to hear or see dogs that have to put in sleep. :( Because I'm a dog lover.

What's odd, Sweetheart, is that I approached the owner and she was still just non-chalantly walking away from me, although I was already in a confrontational tone of voice. I wasn't swearing or swinging the ball thrower, but, if I was, the son would have reason to restrain me and this would not have been an assault toward me.

Snickers vet bill topped $500.

I know that's wrong of them. They should get a fine for not have the leash on the dog if you dont see that. That's against the law for not having the leash on the dogs becuase they could attack anything if they have problems with something. There is a MUST to have the leash on the dogs.

Wow.. well have the owner pay for it! It would have been scary for me if it happened to me. I think the owner must have been careless about the dog.. or just teach the dog to attack other dogs.. it may be involved in dog fightings as well. I heard MN is famous for dog fightings but its illegal right?

Yeppers that's right, it's illegal for having the dogs fighting for MONEY, mostly of people do that for money and don't care about dogs' safe and healthy, hate that!

Oh I know sweetheart! Money is worthless to me! Love the pet is worth it to me. They are precious to me!

Dog fighting is beyond illegal, it's a felony in most states and the participants can be sent to prison for years and/or face hundreds, if not thousands of dollars in fines.

I'll check Friday morning to see if the police report is ready and if it qualifies to be upgraded to a felony.

I have to contact the news media, as well.

Wow how long in prision?

Animal fighting and baiting is illegal in SC. That includes dog fighting, hog-dog fighting, and cock fighting. Still, many people continue to do it.

SECTION 16-27-40. Acts constituting misdemeanors upon conviction of first or second offense and constituting felonies upon conviction of third or subsequent offense; penalties.

Any person who:

(a) is present at any structure, facility, or location where preparations are being made for the purpose of fighting or baiting any animal with knowledge that those preparations are being made, or

(b) is present at any structure, facility, or location with knowledge that fighting or baiting of any animal is taking place or is about to take place there is guilty of a misdemeanor and upon conviction for a first offense must be punished by a fine of five hundred dollars or imprisonment for six months, or both, and for a second offense by a fine of one thousand dollars or imprisonment for one year, or both. Any person convicted of a third or subsequent offense is guilty of a felony and must be punished by a fine of five thousand dollars or imprisonment for five years, or both.

Thanks, Reba!

I did contact the news media here in the Twin Cities and two contacted me, one of which did a story for the 10 pm news. I couldn't find the story on their website, but it may be there tomorrow. Try looking at:

http://www.wftc.com

Also, Snickers boarder (where she goes when I can't take her with me) saw the story tonight and filled my mother in on Boxers. Evidentally, they go for the ears first. I have to talk to her tomorrow and get this story right and will bring it back here for everyone.

Pek!!!

well.. Rocky's attacker dog's owner paid the expenses of vet and fines.. but for you.. will cost more because of service dog..

that had to suck, I'm an avid dog park user and to see this happening and the action by the owner and the son is an embarassment to other dog park users as we promote responsiblity and common sense.

Was wondering how tall you were perhaps the owner felt imidated by your looks not actions?

Good luck!

Sending Snickers my love and best wishes. So sorry to hear that. Get well soon Snickers.

The good sign is that I don't think Snickers will be retiring from active duty as hearing dog for a few more years, because she started responding to sounds and alerting me, despite having a cone around her neck.
