Senator Clinton Recovers After Collapsing
Sen. Hillary Clinton collapsed while delivering a speech at a noon time appearance today in Buffalo, but was able to walk out of the building on her own and continue to her next appointment, staff members and others said.
Mrs. Clinton, who had just begun an address on Social Security at the Saturn Club, a private club, told the audience that she had been suffering from the flu, as had several members of her staff.
But before she could continue her remarks, she collapsed, said Philippe Reines, the senator's press secretary.
"Senator Clinton is suffering from a stomach virus," Mr. Reines said in a statement. "She wasn't feeling well.
"She felt weak, needed to sit down, and then fainted briefly," he continued. "She received immediate medical attention at the site, and is now proceeding with her schedule as planned.
Mrs. Clinton did not ask for an ambulance and was not taken to a hospital. The general manager of the Saturn Club said she walked out of the building without any assistance.
"I saw her walk out the door by herself, she smiled and said `thank you'," the manager, Vincent Tracy, told The Associated Press.
Mrs. Clinton continued to her next appearance, a speech on health care at nearby Canisius College.
A member of the college's staff said Mrs. Clinton had arrived for her speech at about 1:40 p.m., slightly late.
"She looked like Hillary," the staff member said, noting nothing unusual in her appearance.
The staff member, who declined to give her name, said that the auditorium at the college's Montante Cultural Center, which holds 220, was full, and there were still people waiting to get in to hear the senator. She also said there were a few anti-abortion rights protestors outside the Catholic College venue where Mrs. Clinton was to speak.
In September, Mrs. Clinton's husband, former president Bill Clinton, underwent quadruple bypass surgery.
