Hello there. I'm actually searching for something for my deaf mother, and it looks like these forums have enough activity to help me out. I looked through the other forums on here, and I think General Chat is the most applicable forum, but please let me know if I have misposted.

My mother is looking to leave her house and move to a retirement home. There are, of course, many considerations in choosing the right home, but we all agree that the most important quality is a sense of community. My mother does not drive, and it would be most convenient if she had access to a strong deaf community nearby. Also, such a facility would very likely be staffed by people who already know how to sign.

I was wondering if anyone knew of a retirement home in the Kansas City area that has a strong deaf community. If someone knows of other locations, I'd be willing to hear them out, but I doubt she would leave the area.

If anyone knows of retirement homes with a strong sense of community for the deaf, I would really appreciate learning of them.

Hello...
Although you doubt Mom would leave the area, there is a place called California Home for the Aged Deaf (CHAD). They have a capacity for about 25 folks like your Mom. I think there is currently a couple of vacancies. This is in southern CA just outside of Los Angeles.

There are so very few places like this in the USA, unfortunately. Best wishes to/for your Mom.

That's good to know about Olathe. I'll have to check with homes in that area to see if they have caught on to the fact that there is a large deaf community there.

It seems that there's a reason Kingswood no longer mentions deaf services. When I mentioned to the counselor how I was directed to call Kingswood, she was a bit surprised at this. Sadly, while Kingswood does have a couple of deaf residents, the staff doesn't really sign (or at least is not expected to). Although, one of the deaf residents is speaking and does not sign, so there's not much motivation on their part to learn. I'll keep an eye open.

I'll keep the southern California location in mind. I can foresee my mother obstinately refusing to move away from family, but maybe she'll surprise me. I can certainly suggest it.

Thanks for the input so far.

Kevin

I know there is one in Mass. I cant remmy the name or place. Been there for the event and it was very nice place full of ASL. Which was so nice. If I ever have to go to nursing home then that the place I want to go.

Is that the New England home for the Deaf that you're thinking of?

It's apparent we need more nursing home for the deaf.

When checking out these places, make sure you meet their qualifications. The CHAD I mentioned requires, for example, that you be ambulatory.

Yeppers, the architect is John Dickinson. A personal friend of mine.

That's interesting. I looked over the Wisconsin one, and it accomodates deaf and low vision both. Tailored to me! And I saw their application asks about pets, which I assume means they allow them.

But it also has long questions of income, so it looks like you need to already be retired and going there since it is based on your income of the moment. So I don't think getting on a waiting list is a possibility.

I also saw it has 100% occupancy.

They usually have a LONG term 100% occupancy. It is the same in Arizona. The developers for the homes in Wisc and Arizona are working out the details for Iowa one. A lot of redtape to go through for the one in Iowa.
