Nov 13, (THAINDIAN NEWS)Earlier officials at Denair Middle School in California asked athirteen year old boy named Cody Alicea to remove the American flag on the back of his bike because it might trigger racial tension in the school. The incident caught the national headlines in recent months with people voicing their views over the issue. In a surprise turn around, the officials of Denair Middle School have reversed their decision only to permit 13-year-old Cody Alicia to flaunt the colors again.
Cody Alicea says that he does this to be patriotic and to honor veterans, like his own grandfather, Robert. He has had the flag on his bike for two months but on Monday he was asked told to take it down. Superintendent Edward Parraz said that by asking Cody Alicea to hide the U.S. flag he was trying his best to dismiss the racial tensions that Cody Alicia’s act was evoking in the school campus.Edward Parraz further added that of late students have been coming to him reporting of this incident of the flag and that the flag was no longer allowed on the school property. It is pretty evident that Cody Alicea’s simple act of showing his respect towards the veterans in his family has not been quite simply.
Since United States is a nation comprising of people belonging to various cultures this decision on the part of the school has been justified as an act to make children aware of each others cultures and appreciate it. However Cody Alicea’s grandfather on speaking about the school’s decision to ask his grand child to remove the flag said that it definitely shows the school’s concern for avoiding any kind of menace but what he actually feels is that if this act was really an issue then it should have been brought to notice about two months back when Cody Alicea had first put on the flag on his bike and not during the Veteran’s week. After a mass outcry, the officials were forced to reverse their stance and allow Cody Alicea to unfurl the American flag on his bike again.
