How do you deal with rude people when you are at the store or etc...

About several years ago, I went to Kaufmann's to buy a christmas gift for my mother who wants a ' Dicken Villiage set ' , there were serveral of them but with no prices on each of them, so I went up to this sale lady and asked her about the prices for those villiage and she walked by me to where it was at, and started talking so fast which I couldn't bearly understand her, so I told her ' I'm sorry I didn't get what you said because I'm Deaf ' and she looked at me by rolling her eyes and said, ' just a moment , Ill be right back ' so I stood there and waited for at least 30 mins or so, and then I was running out of patient since I was standing there so long , feel like an hour or so. so I walked around to find this sale lady and saw her at this counter by where the christmas things were at, and seeing her taken care of the customers who were paying for the things they brought....

I walked up to her and stood by the other customers waiting until she was done taken care of those customers, and when I notice she was looking at me and didn't say a word not even ' May I help you ? ' so I stood there very patient until the last customer was taken care of, then I said ' Have you found out about how much it cost ? ' and she looked at me and put her finger up and said ' just a second there ' and picked up the phone starting talking to someone which at that time I thought she was getting some information on the prices I asked...

Then more customers came by and she again took care of them first before me, I was getting a bit frustrated because I feel like I've been ignored or being treat differently....so I finally said ' excuess me madam I've waited at least an hour on the prices of those villiage I asked for, and it seem to me you are ignoring me because you are not given me any answer on what I asked for '.... She looked up at me and gave me a really dirty looks and said ' I don't have time deal with this right now ' and for a moment there I didn't quite understand what she meant by what she said so I said ' pardon me? deal with what ? ' She again looked at me and said ' I don't have time to deal with people like you ' and I said ' what people ?' and then she sighed and said ' people who can not HEAR ' and I started to get really upset and said ' I would like to speak to your manager or whoever is in charge ' right in front of the customers that were in line, she picked up the phone and talked to someone then hung up....

Then a few moment later , a man came down and wanted to know what was going on, then I asked ' are you a manager? ' and he nodded and I explained everything that had happened and what she did and etc.. at the same time I was really upset but trying to be calm as much as I could...He was surprised by the fact I wasn't taken care of as a customer and had spoke to this sale lady by moving her aside, and then a few moment later she walked out and the man told the customers to go to the next counter so he could take care of this customer ( which was me )....

The manager gave me a discounnted on those 2 villiages that I wanted, and even gave me a gift cert...I thought that was really nice of him!

Did any of you ever had someone this rude and how did you deal with it?...

reply to rude people

That really is terrible. I have never had something like that happen to me. I am hearing so It seems to me that deaf people tend to be a little more patient, Because the have to deal with rude people all the time that dont make an effort to understand them. That sounds like a terrible experience. I would have left the store after ten minutes. Thank you for sharing

Wow youre very patient. I don't know if I could handle that with so much patience!

Last Saturday, I threw a temper tantrum at a customer service representative at Targets as she refused to help me out. After giving her a piece of my mind, I simply dropped the items on the counter and stormed out of there. My girls were with me and they couldn't understand why I was given bad service comapred to hearing customers.

It happens often. Sometimes Im very patient/nice but on other days, Im cranky and impatient.

 @ nessdagreat,

you know what? my family said the same thing, if they were me, they would have left in 15 mins not an hour or so, and did said why in the earth would you wait that long for just a villiage? and I said blame it on mom, since she really wanted one and I thought I wouldn't leave without getting her one....

then again, I found out other stores has them too....I guess you could say blonde aren't smart afterall!...LOL

Hmm... I've had to deal with a lot of People's rudeness.. I feel ya, Angel. I lost counts on what I've been thru, especially making phone calls thru the relay. But for you Angel, you're pretty patient! I have absolutely none! I would leave items and say you just lost a customer (that would be me) and leave. I'm not a rude person, I'm usually very sweet and soft-hearted but once they piss me off then I'm PISSED! :mad2:

yeah, Angel does seem to have
lots of patience !

I have such a long story about
what happened long time ago...
but I'm re-writing this story
making it shorter as possible
so I'll post this as soon as
when I'm done.

Sure Y, whenever you are ready to add your story here, Ill be waiting :thumb:

Wow quite a story you got there Tweetybird, I'm glad to hear everything worked out at the end! ;)

Anyone else?...

wow, what a quite story, you have Angel and Tweetybird.

I never had an experience like this before.

I tried to picture to myself what I do when I´m in your shoes. I would go off to other store with better one instead of stand for hour or I would of complaint to her/his manager.

^Angel^...got patience??? hmmm...awww...I'm just teasing you, of course I can see that you have much patience especially when it comes to people being rude and the way it turned out for you at the end must have been well worth all the waiting you unfortunately had to go through! Although, I'm not too sure if I could have waited a whole hour...but with ya next to me, I think I could, but then again, why should we?! :naughty:

As for you TweetyBird...you did a commendable job of walking into the store and demanding to see the boss in order to satisfy your requests and order...tsk tsk for the lady that gave you such an attitude, by now, I'm sure she's kickin' her own behind (yeah, the boss sure did to hers!) and hopefully will think twice in the future if she ever does come across to another Deaf person! By the way, were you able to enjoy your free dinner? :)

Right now, I can't think of anytime that I had to deal with rudeness...but once I do, I'll post it here....

Hmmmmm, dunno but glad it worked out for Tweety. If it was a guy like me bursting into an off-limits area, I might be looking down the barrel of a gun or get arrested for trespassing?

Hahaha, Cheri. Just using myself as an example BUT this is something I would NEVER do. I had a good Mommy! LOL!

Hi :) (I finally get to talk)...

You sure was patient! I'm the kind of person who expects that if someone says "I'll get back to you a couple minutes" s/he should get back to me right away -- I sure won't wait for 30 minutes or so for something simple -- and then yes I usually ask the person again to get back to me again, and if that continue one more time, I usually request the manager -- sometimes it's bad or good outcome. Later, I usually write a letter of compliant to the bigger people (owners/headquarters/whatever).

Yes, us Deafies have to deal with ignorance all the time -- it is frustrating, but be grateful that most of us turn out to be better people, more tolerate of each other and others, and more out-spoken....

I do let people get a piece of my mind quite often.

But at least you got discounts and good service from the manager!

I think it is our duty to educate people about customer service with deaf people.
Last thing I would want to happen is to have a person fired for bad service. If I am experiencing communication break-down, I just smile, apologise and explain that I am deaf. Would it be possible for her/him to write it down for me?

If the salesperson becomes rude, I smile and try to remind the person that I am not trying to give him/her a hard time, just that it would be much better to write back and forth instead of misunderstanding keep going on.

If the salesperson keeps on being uncooperative, then ofc I ask to speak with a supervisor or boss. First thing I say, is that is it possible for the boss to re-train the saleperson in customer service to improve his service with deaf person? I try to make the situation positive because I know the person doesnt know how to treat deaf person so just needs to be educated about it.

There have been times when I have lost my cool. But I learned from it, that it creates bad vibes and experience for everyone. That's why it is better to make it positive instead. We don't want to make a bad impression on hearing people being impatient and rude customers.

Number one rule is....treat a customer as the way you want to be treat otherwise you wouldn't like it if they did that to you...

If this person get fired in the result of a bad service, then maybe it would teach him/her a lesson to become a better person when you are dealing with customers, with alot of patient, understanding and always put on a smile...

Some people are going to get fired for whatever reason, it is their job to do the job correctly, and they wouldn't have a problem getting fired...

I like this thread, sharing stories... I recall one of a event I got into during my senior year... it was friday evening I drove to Burger King drive through... I can hear with my hearing aids but I heard a speaker talking to me as usual... I wrote down the paper what i want and drove around the building behind the cars to pay n get the food... One total bitch woman employee (look like she was hired recently when I was there) She simple wrote down the paper back to me and said we're too busy, please park and come in and order. When I read the note, my face got red and I shouted at her that I want my food, she said please move... so I end up honk my car continuous until that woman ran to get her manager to come to see me. I told the manager how bitch she is to deaf people like me. I'm a customer who is hungry and want to eat something so i pay their service in order to get food. The manager apologized, gave me the food, and told me the problem will be taken care of asap. So I decided to park in the parking lot and watch the drama from my car. She was fired and she saw me but in time I drove away before she can hit my bumper... what a total *bleep* lol
