I thought I'd create a thread related to Road Trips. I am aware the gas prices are spiking up at all costs but let's leave the "gas talk" out of this and make this a positive thread.

Here's some ice-breaking questions that we can share about our road trip experiences and what we can look out for.

What's your favorite thing to do during a road trip?

Would you much rather ride the highways or the scenic back roads?

Does anyone have any tips for a female road tripping by herself on safety, etc?

Where would you suggest a road trip to?

If you were to go on a road trip, where would you go to? and why?

Do you play games to pass the time in the car or do you just sit there and ask questions like: Are we there yet?

Discuss. :)

Enjoying the drive without experiecing the boredom on a plane.

Senic back roads are the best way, because it has been in existence since the highways took over, you rather want to drive on back roads like you have gone back in to the 1950's ;) It is worth than the highways, yet long.

best to go with a group, or a friend. If planning to go yourself, best to have the necesary items in case you get into trouble, such as cellphone, flare gun or whatever that is better to get someone's attention.

Where would you suggest a road trip to?

Since I live in Australia, I would like to do a road trip to the sunshine state sometime. Better off flying in 2 short hours. In USA, why dont you use Route 66?

As explained above.

Saying 'Are we there yet?' can be annoying but it is so old school, there is DVD systems implemented nowdays, to keep the passengers pre-occuiped. :) Sometimes, if you don't have a weak stomach, a book to read would statisfy you to pass the time :)

I've been on a couple road trips.

One trip was from New York to Illinois to Texas... then back to New York.

Several trips were from New York to Texas... then back to New York.

One fun trip was from New York to Florida... then back to New York (in a RV).

I LOVE road trips, especially with a friend. I like to take the back roads and enjoy the scenic drive whenever possible. I've driven all over the United states- and it was so much fun! My friends and I would talk about everything. The best road trips are the ones are spontaneously planned.

Recently I took a road trip alone - from Arkansas to where I live now. For so many miles I had cried and cried thinking of all of the horrible things that had happened to me within the past two years. As I headed toward my new designation, my spirit literally started healing. By the time I reached my new home, I was finally okay. I made it- literally and metaphorically. It was such a freeing experience, and I'd never forget it.

My car door's open! Who is gonna join me for a good ride? :D

Count me in! Unless you pay for my flight to the USA ;)

How about the 46 people in your profile circle join you for that good ride, DeafBajaGal? :D

Hope you have room for 46 people in your Pacifica (sp?). :)

What's your favorite thing to do during a road trip?

Seeing more things around during road trip than flying.

Would you much rather ride the highways or the scenic back roads?

Scenic back roads for one way and return back home on highways. Have a bit of both.

Does anyone have any tips for a female road tripping by herself on safety, etc?

Take a cellphone/pager and let a friend or family know where you are.

Where would you suggest a road trip to?

Can't comment about Australia as I haven't done a road trip here.

Do you play games to pass the time in the car or do you just sit there and ask questions like: Are we there yet?

Are we there yet? *kidding* No, mostly too busy chatting to a friends and/ or looking at the beautiful scenic places or busy driving.

Spontaneous road trips are the best as mentioned above.

The other neat thing about road trips is that one can stop at a gaudy tourist trap--( like Wall Drug, SD--it's worth it!) or continue on driving.

Sometimes driving off the beaten path is worth it and sometimes it's not as it draws unwanted attention to you since you are driving with out-of-state plates especially with local cops.

I have taken so many road trips across the country that I have lost track.

But I can say that every part of the country is beautiful in its own way whether it's the morning fog along the northern California route or the farmer working in the fields of Iowa or the ship sailing into port in Massachusetts or driving along into town to find the street closed because it's their annual Popcorn festival.

As for driving across the country alone--I've done it 4 times and had no issue.

I only can fit 7 people (8 including the driver) in my Pacifica - BUT! I have an idea! I'll steal the school bus from my school and use black paint to cross out the name - and yay! We'll have a blast!!!!

For us with little ones, thank god for the portable DVD players in the car! How did our parents manage without them?!!!

In USA, why dont you use Route 66?

The funny thing is, I've been on various road trips (mostly cross country) and Route 66 is the route that I've never been on. So, that's going to be one of my next-to-do thing to mark up on the list.

I'll join right in :) I absolutely love going on the road trips, just as much as everyone says the scenic and the back roads are the awesome route to take.

That must've been quite a journey for you to take a road trip by yourself. Did you ever felt that you were transformed after that journey?

SURE! I'll use Vampy's credit card, so it won't be a problem! :D

Hey, Let's throw in Alex's credit card along with Vampy's and we'll have an AllDeaf Road Trip all together! :D

haha, it'll be fun!!

i always wanted drive on historic of Route 66. Then drive with imaginary car- "Lighting McQueen" and "Doc Hudson"

I'm gonna go on a two week road trip by myself come late july-early aug. I have my GPS, new car, etc. My main destinations are Tallahassee, Little Rock, Chicago, Rochester, and NYC. I will probably stop in DC for a couple hours to chat with a pal or two before heading back to FL. I have a feeling they might want me to stay overnight, LOL. Seesee.

Pretty much I am visiting old pals from gally and HS and enjoying the changes of scenery. My friend in LR will give me the experience of the southern culture and artist community. Whoo. I'm checking out a couple museums and the possibility of living in Tallahassee, but seesee. My pal suggested a beautiful historic garden on my way after Tallahassee.. sounds good, I will take tons of pic, hehe. And of course, in the big cities.. partying and playing tourist with pals!

Yeah, I wonder about the safety of a lone female on the road.. so I'm gonna hafta buy mace for my keychain. Thankfully I will stay with friends at a few stop points. I'm a bit worried about GPS and my sidekick lx draining power from my car battery, so I'll get a portable car battery charger. Um, know how to change a tire.. check! How to change oil.. check! Replace the blown fuse with spare fuses.. check! Emergency roadside service, check! Little post it notes and pens for communicating with hearies, check! Beef jerky and plain black coffee, check!

Altho I'm a bit concerned about tmobile not covering some areas I am driving through..

I cant read books or stuff like that when I'm driving, but I will probably fiddle with the radio and GPS.. and chat a little on aim or tmail to pass the time. And do some thinking. Enjoy the scenery, too!

By the way, I own a new Kia Rio '07.

Been on road trips many times. From California to Texas and California to Michigan and Ohio :)

Due to rising cost of fuel, I have not taken road trips since 2005 :(

I enjoy road trips for scenery and seeing new places for more memories to come ;)

If you are going to pass through Savannah, GA--check it out!

Neat city!
