I have a horizontal crack on right hinge of LCD panel shell. My laptop is only 4 year old and I couldn't find Acer replacement shell in Ebay. So another method to repair. Since that hinge have spring and is bolted to frame of the mobo shell and LCD monitor shell that put alot of twisting stress on it.

I wonder have anyone ever repaired hinge crack on their laptop. Superglue wouldn't fix it. Is there any other methods that can permanently repair the hinge crack?

Take a look at pictures of how bad it is (pictures taken with Logitech Vision Pro for MAC w/auto focus) :eek2: :giggle:

I am worried that perhap about 10 to 20 times opening and closing the LCD monitor shell hinge will finally give way to unhinge the monitor.

I am planning on getting new laptop in near future. So I don't care if it would look ugly on my good ol' Acer laptop. Planning on giving it to kids once I get new one.

Duct tape? ;)

Nah, It won't hold well. Duct tape have many uses but they don't last. Otherwise it's gooey mess if replacing tape

I was thinking of using metal brace and put skinny long bolt through the hinge hole and through shell to metal brace and tighten with nuts. Then use Dremel tool with cutter disk to cut off the bolt excess. The only problem is I am not sure what location is the LCD CCL inverter is. I will have to crack the shell open to see what I can do. This would be a permanent one.

Or do a drastic measure using pre-cut 1/4 or 1/8 inch plywood board and remove old plastic shell and bolt plywood to back of black plastic front monitor panel (same holes where it bolts to silver plastic shell).. Trim the edges with Dremel tool with tube sander to smooth the edges. I bet it's called Shell modding. Then perhap using hot woodburning iron do wood burning drawing on top of it. ( I can do milling on plywood board to have inner recessed 'shell' to accomodate LCD panel. I bought a nice new fancy champ Dremel 4000 tool with attachments tips.)

Any more suggestions??

I had same problem with my old Acer's hinge. I paid $40 for replaced the new cover in 4 years ago. You have to apart the lcd's cover and you will find the item number label inside the lcd's cover. Then put the item number on ebay/google to find the part.

Yup, ebay is great place for you to find replacement parts.

I just cracked the monitor shell open. It's now in several pieces even with monitor propped up by box and turned on. I can see inside of shell do have room between monitor and shell. it means that I will be able to use metal brace instead of plywood board. Because, the hinges itself are very strong and i can't twist it with my bare finger. I had to use needlenose pliers to twist it. So apparently metal brace is the best option to fix the problem. The ccl inverter is just under middle bottom of monitor. It's a good news for me.

I checked Ebay according to part number (tsa xxxx.xxx.xx-x) number and it doesn't show up. Apparently it's not on the Ebay list. I decided to forgo ordering new shell. It's not worth fixing old laptop with new parts. So Metal braces are one to use.

here's my pix of my lappy :rofl2: (it's running on Ubuntu with Guvcviewer to take snapshot.. Never mind the Belkin N Router box, I'm not using Belkin anymore and i'm planning to sell it in Ebay..)

My lappy is fixed!!

I decide to go for metal brace originally from 90 degree bracket. I use my dremel w/ fiberglass cutter to cut off the "elbow" and have pair of straight brackets. I drilled the holes matching the laptop's hole. Then assembled it together and it held so well and I don't think I would have any issue with it for life of the laptop. I use 6 of flat head bolts which do not have slots so it can be recessed to shell without getting in the way of monitor reinstallation, each of one long bolts goes to bottom of brace on both side to secure the hinge hole and both shells (front and back). Then the rest of 2 of each bolts are shortened and is bolted behind the silver shell. I grinded off 4 bolts end after tightened the nuts. (Both braces on Left and Right hinge part of my lappy. )

Here's the pix, it may look ugly but remember it's gonna be my kid's system once I get new one. I betcha it's gonna take abuse well.
( Side pix of brace in front and you can see on the other end that look little blurry) :rofl2:

That's why I said ebay/google.com

Did you check the item number by google shopping?
Google Product Search

Looks overbuilt. :laugh2:

Its always nice to be a handyman.

P.S. As long as there's no duct tape and baling wire. Lol!

Ha ha... Good job Dr Frankenstein. Now you can screamed "It's Alive!! It's Alive!!"

You know because it reminded me of a big bolts on each side of Frankenstein neck.

Maybe I could wire a 12vdc battery to hook up with clamps on bolts to power up the lappy so it's called a Frankenlaptop. :rofl2:
