Religion?

Is there anything that you are against because of your religion or beliefs?

My cousin and friend are against Harry Potter because of its use of wizardry with children.

A customer at a video store I used to work at was against Hocus Pocus cuz of its use of witchcraft while aimed to younger audiences.

My grandparents are against playing with a normal deck of playing cards because of its conflict with their religion. They believe that it's wrong since K represents The Lord, Q represents The Virgin Mary, and J represents Jesus. That's why they only play with Rook playing cards, because it has 1 to 14 instead of A to K. It also uses 4 colors instead of 4 suits.

For me, I'm not really against anything. I'm pretty open-minded.

I've heard of people against dancing because they think it is too sexual. I don't like heavy metal because I think it makes its audience too freaky.

Correction:

Here's the religious definition of the playing cards that my grandparents are against.
  • K = Satan or devil
  • Q = Virgin Mary or Mother of Jesus
  • J = Knave or Lord
  • Hearts = blood of The Lord
  • Clubs = destruction of the saints
  • Joker = Jesus
Boy, talk about serious religious superstition!

hmph. I think it is weird to not celebrate your own birthday (Jeh.'s Witness)... not that I am against their beliefs but I never understand the point of NOT celebrating your birthday.. what is wrong with it? it is like celebrating your anniversay so ... is it bad to eat cake on the same day you were born? :dunno: if there is an explanation behind that, then I will stop pondering about that. I just don't understand it. [shrug] I like to be able to celebrate my birthday which therefore gives me an excuse to pig out ;-) heetee

I am not able to recall any strange beliefs... [thinking]
well I dont like to walk- lemme rephrase it... if I am with a friend or a group of friends, and a pole is going to "split" us, I dont like it. I think it is bad luck, so I always try to get on the same side with my friends before the pole splitting us up.

I understand what you mean. I hear they don't celebrate Halloween either. Eek! There are some people who believe that Halloween is pure wicked evil that they won't let their children dress up in costumes and/or go trick-or-treating. Jeez!

In Jehovah Witness, they also do not celebrate Christmas. But they do have something called "Family Day" where they honour the parents and so on. They refuse to stand to the flag and sing patriotic songs, because they only follow the laws that are made by the God, not the man. Anyway enough about JW, I know something about it because my best friend happens to be part of that religion.

As for my beliefs in Buddhism, it generally has similar ideas as Christianity, such as not hurting other people, not judging other people, etc... However, Buddhism believes in the 4 divine truths of life, Kharma, Dharma and Nirvana.

Kharma is a cycle when if I do something bad to something or somebody, it will come back to me. If I do good things, then it will come back to me too. That is why a lot of Buddhists are vegetarians because they dont want to kill animals and inflict suffering on them, as they believe that it will be returned back to them in kharma.

Also, with buddhism, they believe that suffering is an essential part of life, and that it is to be accepted. Also, suffering is what you make out of it. If you make it too dramatical and only view on the bad side of it, then it just goes on and on. If you understand that things happen, and you get over that suffering, you go on with life. Also, they believe that suffering is also caused by a person's desires in life, such as material stuff and so on. If the person try to minimalise that desire, then he wont feel the suffering. I know this prolly sounds weird but its what I believe in. :)

That reminds me of a movie, Footloose, starring Kevin Bacon. In that movie, there's a town that forbids joy or pleasure of any kind for children... especially dancing. This guy (played by Kevin) moves to that town and attemps to defy their beliefs.

That town probably has no television sets so they have almost no understanding of the outside world. Im sure there are few Amish like towns in isolated parts of USA. About my area, there are many baptist churches and they are pretty strict like Mizz Deaf said. One big school district here called Broken Arrow does not like students to have earrings, tattoos, and clothes that display drugs or alcohol. They forbid dance nights on the campus. They havent still changed much now. B.A. schools have deaf programs (ranging from deaf classes to interpreters) by the way.

LOL....one of my old pals lived with her grandmother who wouldn't let her celebrate Halloween b/c she believed that it was the devil's birthday!
Me, I'm pretty open-minded. I am not religious but I am very spirtual.....I find the rules of religions too stifling...I'm very Unitarian in my beliefs even thou I don't go to a Unitarian church or anything.

I just learned yesterday that any left-handed people are
considered "NOT Clean" and Bad
especially in the Middle East...
some of their soliders were very careful not to SHOW
anyone else their real skill using their left hands on their weapons

I'm catholic.. but not against anything.. I don't agree with some religion beliefs in other religions.. like J.W. religion but its their religion belief whoever is J.W. not mine..

Y, interesting about left handed.. I didn't know about that. Good thing I dont live in Middle East where people think that.. my 3 yr old son is left handed ;)

Also, I see some conflict between Religion and Science. Why? Let me tell you. Just remmy, my words are just IMO. Not mean to offend anyone's belief.

For Religion, I do remmy I was told by someone about Mormons (or LDS) about masturbate issues. Their belief is should not doing mastrubate before get married.

For Science, I read article somewhere in AD. Also, told by some people, too. Maturbate really good for men. Even women, too. To balance the hormones. Let me pull the old thread from AD. Male Masturbation is healthy!!!

I am Catholic, I am pretty flex - not too strict.

I can dance.
We have fun on Halloween Day.
We open present for Christmas and birthday.

What else? hmmm...

I hear Baptist are against Walt Disney.

Yeah, it's also in baptist religion as well. I knew a few people who gave up masturbation because it was considered a sin. In order to masturbate properly, you have to think of something that turns you on. In a way, that is like dreaming or looking at porn or dirty magazines. That is considered a sin. If a person has a specific fetish and is turned on by that fetish, then that is also considered a sin to even think about it because they could actually have improved their lives if they had taken the time to go to church and read the bible. That's why I think this whole thing is bullshit. Ugh!

Well, Cricket, there's a reason for the "not clean" comment about Middle Easterners's left hand......know what it is? It'll crack you up.... ;)

I am baptist and breaking the bend... anyway, I know about Walt Disney because of gay issues. I think it is stuipd to bother them for that reason. :nono: My dad is left handed and not see nothing wrong about that.
