Girl Dies Weeks After Man Mowed Her Down

Man Who Claims He 'Saw Something Evil' Charged

INDIANAPOLIS -- A 15-year-old girl who was struck by an SUV last month driven by a man who claimed he hadn't taken his schizophrenia medication and "saw something evil" died early Friday morning.

Dawn Boozer-Carter had been hospitalized since the May 22 incident in which Derek Dewitt, 43, admitted striking the girl and her mother, Tina Boozer-Carter, 41, as they raised money for the Indiana School for the Deaf, where the girl was a student and athlete.

"It was not easy on the Carter family," read part of a posting on the girl's Caring Bridge website. "Dawn is in heaven now and no more pain."

Dawn had been in a coma and in intensive care since the crash. The family had undergone other hardships recently, having lost its house to a fire prior to the crash.

In an interview with 6News' Kara Kenney earlier this week, Tina Boozer-Carter said through an interpreter that she could forgive Dewitt. But on Friday, Dawn's mother said that now, she can't.

"Why did this guy do this?" she said. "My daughter did not deserve this."

Dewitt was charged with two counts of attempted murder after the crash. During a jailhouse interview with 6News last month, he said he had a psychotic episode and that he was sorry.

Dawn's family is considering legal action against Dewitt and the owner of the SUV. Dewitt wasn't licensed in Indiana.

Charges could be upgraded against Dewitt in light of the girl's death. A public defender was appointed for him on Friday. A trial is tentatively set for August.

Dawn's mother wants Dewitt to be charged with murder. He was previously incarcerated after stabbing a woman during a schizophrenic episode in Georgia.

"They let him out, and … look what happened. He did it again," she said. "I've just lost our home to a fire, and now I've lost my daughter."

The school released a statement on Friday, which read, in part:

"Dawn was a child who brought sunshine to those around her. She was funny, loved to tease and was a great athlete. Her athletic prowess was one of the reasons that Dawn and her mother were supporting ISD’s athletic program through the fundraising car wash last month where they were both so seriously injured."

Rest in peace, Dawn. I guess we will never what hit us if that happen whether nature (weather) or someone hurting us or killing us. That is a terrible tragedy and I am sorry that the Carter Family have to go through this trying time with all of the things happening to them. :(

What's sad that this man was free to hurt someone again. Very tragic.

Depends on something such as anything to keep it controllable in reality is sad. I feel sad for this little 15 yrs old girl.

So sad. Lost a child is worst thing any parents have gone thru. RIP Dawn.

I was saddened to hear of this tragedy. I hope they will lock this criminal up for life.
Hope the Boozer-Carter family can get through this.

I agree.. this man has already tried to kill someone by stabbing the person. He defiantly needs to be locked up for life...

They're places for people like him.....the criminally insane.
