My boyfriend gave me a laptop for xmas. I’m familiar on how to connect it using a cable to the internet; however, I don't know how to connect it using wireless...

I want to bring my laptop w/ me anywhere I go with internet connection because I am taking online classes.

What do I need?
Do I need a wireless router? And if yes, will I have to connect it at home?

Do I need an Ethernet wireless card for my laptop?

How does it work? How will I get an internet connection if I'm not around my house?

Sorry too many questions...I hope you take the time to answer me.

:ty: in advance,

Kim

Ethernet wireless card is the best.. you can go best buy they have few of it.. you set a small device to hook your computer and make sure both of them are working.. then you can carry anywhere with the range mileages away from your home..

wow haven't seen you around in a long time

You will need a wireless adapter. You don't need to connect it at home. However, if you wanted to use it at home while wireless... you'd need a wireless router at home. You can only go wireless if the location you're going to has a wireless connection. Almost all of RIT campus is wireless so if you visited RIT, you could get online. :thumb:

Good thing SilverRoxy brought this up... I also got myself a new laptop computer and it does have a wireless card... but my question is:

Does it cost anything to use it? How does that work?

Thanks!! :)

It's free. If you have your own ISP at home with a wireless router, then you'll be fine. The same goes for those wireless locations. Some might have restrictions such as registration, etc. RIT only allows those who are registered on their network to use their services.

I have a wireless laptop, and I love it. Didn't need a card; wireless was built-in. At home I use Linksys Wireless Broadband 2.4GHz router connected to my Roadrunner cable Surfboard modem. Linksys is upstairs, my laptop is downstairs; very convenient.

You can use wireless "hot spots" at various places but depends on restrictions, as VamPyroX said.

I have Microsoft Broadband Networking Wireless Notebook Adapter MN-700 ...80.11g/WI-FI. It worked for few days in my apt. The strange thing is it worked without the router.
