"Q-Tips"...and teenagers....adults too!

Took my 17 yr old for another physical. He's on the wrestling team....He checked out well...until the doctor looked in his ear(s)....thought there was an excess of wax buildup..so the nurse came in to clean out his ears...

To find that he had a Q-tip embedded not into 1 ear, but both!...He had been complaining of headaches off and on, so I had his eyes checked also....then since he loves music and records a lot (his own songs)...he mentioned that he was "tone deaf." (HAHA)...

To make the story short...it took a while to get those Q-tips out of his ears...The nurse suggested I get Q-tips used on babies.....and when I got home, I threw out ALL the Q-tips....

I had many, many times showed my boys how to use Q-tips, and cautioned them NOT to stick them deeply into the ear.

So we both left the doctor's office in a very bad mood...he went back to school...and I asked him..."Can you hear me now"? in a very loud voice!....I couldn't undy why he didn't tell me the Q-tip had broken off in his ear(s)....the only reason was, he had been sticking it too deep....as "it felt good"!

Q-tips are dangerous if not used properly.
 
I use Q-tips, and never hand one break off. How in the heck did he break it off?? They do not break easily, ya know? It seems like it was intentional to doso. Or unless he broke them in half before he used it.

First time I have heard of a Q-tip being lodge in someones ear... much less a teenager.

Glad all is well now.

If he wants to be deaf, let him be? Why oppress a person? :giggle:

But yeah, qtips breaking off in both ears is a bit odd....
 
yeah it did happen to me and i was freaking out and removed it. I did tell my kids about it. Hope they remember what I told them. Look like I will need to remind them again.
 
I will never look at a q-tip the same way again! :(
 
When one says that the tip broke off, do they mean the cotton comes off, or the actual whole tip breaks off? Because even if the whole tip breaks from the main handle, it still is attached. It's just bent. It's actually hard to try to completely break the q tip into two pieces. It requires folding up and down. I would know, I use them often to simulate squirrels.

This is very very odd....

We haven't factored in the velocity of the break. But again, that might obviously display some sort of wound in the ear canals.
 
Yeah I was just thinking it is HARD to break one in half, the only logical thing is that the cotton comes off at the ends. If its really waxy then it can stick in there I am sure. This is why I put a bit of proxide on the tips and then clean the ear out so it doesnt stick. Odd it happened in one ear but BOTH? weird... Glad he is ok!

Sit down, little kiddies. Let me tell you a story.

A baby squirrel was born and he was named Ivan. At a several days old, he fell out of a nest and lost his mommie after a nasty storm. Luckily, two awesome women decided to take care of him and raise him to be old enough to be released back to the wild. He is fed with formula, not as good as mommie's milk, but good enough. He cannot pee on his own. Normally, the mother would repeatedly lick his wee in order to simulate him to pee. Otherwise, Ivan can get a rupture in his bladder. The two awesome foster mommies refuse to lick his wee, so they use Q tips to do the simulating. Ivan loves this activity.

what brand of Q-Tips were you using before?

Specific brand is important for reason like above. I can't remember what I have now but other brand... the cotton tip frays too easily. I'll check when I get home.
 
It was the "cotton part' that got embedded (both ears)....I can only guess he was swabbing his ears too hard and perhaps too deep and the cotton fell off the Q-tip....he did say he got part of it out...and thought that was all of it....(which I find unbelievable!)...No telling how long those Q-tips were in his ears.....

It was "early release" today from school (every other Wednesday)...he came home, no headache...feeling good, but I'm still angry...we talked again at the table and I was reminding him of many times that his music was too loud before, and he didn't think so....he did say that everything seems to sound "louder" now than it was....:giggle:..of course, he head was plugged up with Q-tip balls!...Then he said non-chalently..."I'll never use a Q-tip again"!...and I said, that's right...because I trashed every Q-tip in this house.

I had to do it with puppies. Not only stimulate them to pee but to poop too.
I did it each time I fed the puppies. Used a warm wet cotton pad insted of Q-tips.
