Postal Worker Accused of Dumping Mail in Trash

the work can be extremely hard and the pay is crap. of course this is bound to happen.

Doesn't matter what the pay is... mail should never be thrown away.

If he doesn't like the pay, then he can quit.

This reminds me of an incident I saw on television years ago. This couple noticed that they weren't getting their packages and were getting less mail than before. So, they set up a camera. At first, they saw the mailman pass by dropping off the mail. They waited eagerly to see who would come by later to steal the mail. What do they see? The same mailman driving by again and taking the mail back out.

There was another incident with Netflix and Blockbuster Online. There was a large number of customers not getting their DVDs mailed to them or returned. Upon investigation, they determined the location and caught the mailman collecting those DVDs in a trash bag. He would "throw it away" during work hours, then come back to the trash to pick it up after work. They followed him and caught him.

USPS? Seriously, I rather to work at USPS over all retail, restaurant and fast food due to good pay, good benefits and better working condition.

USPS pay isn't crap. It's better than start working at UPS or Federal Express. I think in the mid 2000's, it was $13 something per hour to start delivering mail in the city. The downside, the pay is less if you work in rural areas with your own car.

I use to click "paperless" setting online when i pay bill statement on internet without delivery mail to home. I don't trust postman or someone steal it from mailbox.

I think that dump the mail in trash should be federal crime and the worker need to be prosecuted.

federal crime? no that won't work. mail is a private property.

Yes, it is federal offense. It has not changed. Many thought they were privatized but really still in control of Uncle Sam.

Another one, still shows as federal offense crime

Another one, shows that USPS is still federal entity which means it has not 100% privatized yet, and it still IS Federal offense.

Any postal worker who steals or dumps the mails that belong to customers deserves a punishment. Any one of those workers dump the mails because they are lazy so the pay has nothing to do with it.

Only nixie clerks can dump dead mails which are damaged and/or have no address to be sent or returned to. A third-class mail with no address service requested will become dead if the recipient's address is incorrect or the mail is unclaimed. They (made of paper) will be recycled.

only mail fraud, not mail tampering.

Federal law title 18, section 1708 covers stolen mail. Punishable by up to 5 years in jail. I would think one could argue that he stole the mail as he kept it from being properly delivered.

Right, even if one tampers private mailboxes, it IS Federal offense too.

Tampering with mail is a federal crime and fraud risk

What is the punishment for withholding mail from someone who is not a minor but no longer lives at their former address

Does tampering with UPS packages have federal protections like the USPS? - Avvo.com

Yes, thank you for explanation because Safari browser my iPhone has issue when I tried to reply Jiro's post.

Just reread it and it does include destruction. Mail is covered because the government considers mailboxes, post officed, mail bags and delivery vehicles federal property. So if you take a letter in rout or from a mailbox it is a federal crime.

I'm not denying it's a tough pace, but do you need a college education for the job? It has to be taken for what it is.

Personally, I think USPS needs to get into email and overnight delivery to a greater extent. Email should be controlled by the government. If you do this, the pay will be more representative. In addition, some of our taxes support it.
