Detroit police said two people were shot on Detroit’s east side Thursday, after a fight inside Denby High School spilled out onto the street.
Detroit Public Schools said one of the victims was a 16-year-old freshman girl who was attending summer classes.
Police said the other is victim is a male who fled the scene after being shot.
Police on the scene said the 16-year-old was shot once in the side, about 100 feet from the building near Seymour and Salter streets.
Police said they believe two groups of teenagers started fighting inside the school before moving around the block when the shooting occurred.
“They moved around the corner from the school and the altercation escalated and resulted in one or two weapons being used,” Detroit Public Schools Police Chief Roderick Grimes said.
Resident Arlene Smith called the scene chaotic. She said clothes were shred, punches were thrown and then bullets started flying.
“When the guns started shooting, we started ducking,” she said. “I can’t imagine being her mother, because that’s the worst phone call to get in the world.”
There have been no arrests.
“It’s unfortunate. We just have to watch our kids as they move away from the school,” Grimes said.
