Tell Congress: It's Time for a REAL Vote to Raise the Minimum Wage

Minimum wage workers have been waiting a decade for a raise that can help lift their families out of poverty. Passing a minimum wage increase does not have to be hard. It would be simple to enact a $2.10 raise without poison pills. A majority in both houses of Congress already supports a $2.10 increase without poison pills.

The only thing stopping minimum wage workers from getting a $2.10 raise is the unwillingness of the Republican leadership of Congress to allow consideration of a clean minimum wage bill with no strings attached.

Minimum wage workers should not have to get in line behind Paris Hilton and the Wal-Mart heirs to receive the long overdue pay increase they rightly deserve. The Republican estate tax bill would blow a $753 billion hole in the federal budget, and working people would have to pay that price—with budget cuts to Medicare, Medicaid, food stamps, veterans programs and unemployment insurance—so the 8,200 wealthiest estates in America can get an average tax break of $1.3 million.

That’s an outrage.

Republican leaders are determined not to allow a clean vote on raising the minimum wage. It’s up to us to put the pressure on, and during the congressional recess, while they’re in their home districts, is a great time for us to do it. Show up where members of Congress are making their local election-year appearances and demand they get serious about raising the minimum wage.

I fully back this. The minimum wage is far too outdated. It has not kept up with the rise in the cost of living. This is just another example of how Republicans wish to only serve corporate interests and the wealthy. After this previous vote, Sean Hannity was ragging on Democrats for defeating the bill because of the attached poison pill, claiming "Democrats want you to pay more taxes after your dead." Fact is, the estate tax only applies to amounts over $15 million. I cannot believe these people.

Thank you SJCSue and I signed the petition. God Bless !!!!!

The petition wouldn't work though but rising the federal minimum wage will be in 2007 or 2008.

I know they need to rasie it. I don't know how people would live on minium wage now-a-days I know I couldn't. Considering my job I drive 24 miles there one way. And gas kills part of my paycheck.

Minimum wage jobs aren't intended to be life-long full-time careers. People aren't expected to support familes on minimum wage jobs. Minimum wage work is for entry level or supplemental income or training level work that requires low-level skills and little training.

People working at minimum wage jobs should be encouraged to seek further training and advancement to higher paying jobs rather than increasing the pay for their current jobs.

The marketplace of supply and demand, not the government, should control wages.

Here is real problem, If I am the owner of the company and I was forced to increase the minimum wage, whadda me do to solve problem? Lay off everybody, then move jobs to overseas. There is no law that prohibits me from outsourcing... Who is the real losers? You know already! That is EXACT what is happening nowadays! Is it worth to jack up the minimum wage? You decide!

It should be mandatory as the cost of living rises so should the wage.
How can people live on that the cost of living so expensive?

Look at it this way....Welfare and SSI Pays More than minimum wage.Women make more Babies so they increase more Welfare and SSI thats just how the system works. If you raise the minimum wage to $8.20 an Hour you might people off the welfare rolls. Why you think the democrats wanna raise your taxes? To help to pay more for Welfare and SSI.

What's the minimum wage ? I mean, how much per hour they pay for ?

6.70 an hour need to raise it 8.20 an hour.

Ah $ 6.70 per hour ?! That's not enough. It should be more than that, because of the cost of livin' is high.

I agree that it should raise more than $ 6.70 per hour to help people to meet their ends.

Steve is wrong. The national minimum wage is $5.15 per hour, and Democrats want to raise it to $7.50. It has not been raised in over 10 years, while inflation and general cost of living have increased. The amount of people living in poverty has only grown over this long period of time. It's time to do something about it, but the only way Republicans are willing to let it happen is if they're rich buddies get a tax break on the side.

Steve can bitch about Democrats, Welfare, and SSI all he wants but the truth is he is only simplifying the matter like he tends to do. I'm going to trust in everyone's judgement to know better because I'm not wasting my time bitching at him.

Not in Florida its not.States minimum wage is 6.70 an hour. And Its true why people are on SSI and Welfare.Cause its not worth getting a job making 5.15 an hour.

Ok, Guido. Thanks for makin' it clarification. But, hey - no worries about Steve. I am just tryin' to make a conversation to get the information about the minimum wage until you came in to tell it how much it actually is. Thanks !

Speakin' of $ 5.15 per hour is way too short to meet the ends. Not enough to cover everythin' from month to month basis. No wonder some people who work at $ 5.15 per hour live in a " cheap " area like " used " mobile homes/or trailers, because they couldn't afford to rent/or buy a suitable house. They count on the food to provide for the families under the " used " roof ( not suitable house, if you get my drift ). I don't think that minimum wage will help people's dreams to come true, because of the hardship.

My mom used to be poor when I was a kid. I helped her pickin' all the figs up from the ground ( at the field ) and put 'em in the wooden boxes. I was about 9 or 10 years old. I had to kneel down on the dry and hard ground to pick up the figs from am to pm everyday -- so, my mom could get her " blue stamps " books to fill in -- that was for the foods she picked up from. Oh, yes it was verrry hard job for me, because of the knees and the heat outside durin' summer. It was in California at that time. I will never forget those days. My 2 siblin' stayed home, because they were too young. Me, the oldest in the family. When the fall came, my mom bought me lots of clothes for school. She laid them all on my bed when I came home one day. Surprised me, yeah. LOL After all these summer was over, my mom and dad finally found a decent home for 5 kids included me. *chuckles* But, one thing I HATE - that darn airplanes flew above the house back and forth -- that drove me insane. That explained why I quit wearin' HAs. Oh, well -- that was long time ago. My story of my life.

Soo, I pretty much can understand how that poverty went. I am kinda of not pleased to see filthy rich buddies bein' inconsiderate about the " poor " familes who don't earn much from that minimum wage. Without raisin' more than 10 years is tooo long and yes, you are right about doin' somethin' about it.
What do you think you are gonna do ? Any better idea ?

That might be your state's minimum wage, but the issue at hand is the national minimum wage. And people are forced to resort to working minimum wage jobs when they do not possess the in demand skills or training for higher paying jobs. Its not always a choice.

Perhaps you need to stay out of discussions and leave the politics to the big boys. Kthx.

There's not much we can do about it, except get these Republican crooks out of office. Get educated about you candidates. Find where they stand on this issue. Dig for the dirt. Then decide if they are who you want in office. If Democrats, as expected, retake Congress this November, I'm almost certain we'll see an increase in the minimum wage with no strings attached.

Yea but we have highest minimum wage in LA metro, that where people make $9 per hours without benefits for health insurance and $10 per hours with benefits for health insurance. Republicans are just think about rich and get good job instead of minimum wage, also get tax cut too. That's fucking unfair and you need complain about them but low income families are getting fuck up too because their $$$$ aren't meet to needs, that's not enough. Come on and visit LA then you would notice much different from southeast USA that where's bible belt is located. You can visit northeast and upper midwest states like Chicago, NYC, Detroit, Boston, Philly, NJ, Cleveland and Minneapolis, all of them are much different from southeast states too.

I'm avoid to relocate in southeast USA because people are weird, against on personal rights, school system sucks, bad life for single and partner because they have no benefits for health insurance from good job, worst political, demands on religion (Christians) and want religion and government in same time, also people who are christian and think about 100% right but not true. Now, Government are protect us from religion biased and support to separate on religion and government.

I believe the Democrats will if, the Republican crooks are out. *prayin'* LOL Too long is enough this time. Unfortunately, I don't vote, but I am hopin' all of you would vote to help supportin' the poor families to get better minimum wage, so they can get the food on the table or what ever they need to meet their ends. Make their dreams come true for once ! ;)
