Hello everyone I am currently attending college. As an assignment we must create a hypothetical invention then ask 10 people about the invention. If you guys would be so kind as to answer several questions, and help me out I'd greatly appreciate it.

My invention is a seat for movie theaters that would have small monitor in the back of the seats. The monitor would then provide subtitles for the deaf patrons sitting behind it. The monitor would have a touch screen for selecting between languages and such things as adjusting font size.

Questions for you guys pertaining to the hypothetical invention:

1. How often do you go to a movie theater?

2. Would you use this product if a movie theater offered it? Yes or No

3. Are there any additional functions that would make the product more enticing to you?

4. Would you rather the product be a monitor attached to the back of a seat or a stand alone device that could be held?

5. Would the availability of this product entice you to go to the theater more often?

6. Would you also like to have a "speaker" added into the movie seat so it would transmit vibrations e.a. explosions on screen?

7. Would you be willing to pay a premium at the movie theater in order to use this product? If so what dollar amount would you suggest (lets say adult theater tickets are 8 dollars before premium.)

Thank you in advance to everyone that responds. Again it would be really helpful to me.

As for me, I am from Australia, if this would be successful - a distrubition around the world would be great but here is the answers to the questions. Hope it helps.

1. How often do you go to a movie theater?

For me, not much due to my tight schedule - but some reasons apart by that is that the OC (open captions) sometimes doesn't work.

2. Would you use this product if a movie theater offered it? Yes or No

Yes, if the product is working well for the deaf community

3. Are there any additional functions that would make the product more enticing to you?

Behind the chairs sounds like for in air flights but in theaters, it is quite a interesting invention but nothing to add just Subtitles and speaking/vibrations to match the loud sounds, prehaps?

4. Would you rather the product be a monitor attached to the back of a seat or a stand alone device that could be held?

Both? Depends on the availability

5. Would the availability of this product entice you to go to the theater more often?

Maybe, if I hear that the product is more successfull and viable

6. Would you also like to have a "speaker" added into the movie seat so it would transmit vibrations e.a. explosions on screen?

Why not?

7. Would you be willing to pay a premium at the movie theater in order to use this product? If so what dollar amount would you suggest (lets say adult theater tickets are 8 dollars before premium.)

If the product is quite rare and expensive, a premium would be good for now, but in future would be more different if this was effected everywhere.

Good luck :)

The backs of the seats are too low for a screen that shows closed captions, at least in every theatre I've been in, in some theaters the back of the seat in front of me is level with my knees.

Questions for you guys pertaining to the hypothetical invention:

1. How often do you go to a movie theater?

I guess I average about once every 3 years or so. I'd go 4 or 5 times a year if I didn't have to drive over an hour to see a captioned movie, and the fact that only one movie a week is captioned also prevents me from seeing movies in theaters.

2. Would you use this product if a movie theater offered it? Yes or No
See my note above, I'd try it but I don't think it's usable.

3. Are there any additional functions that would make the product more enticing to you?
We need a product that's completely independent from the movie theaters. A product that can be used in any theater for almost any movie.

4. Would you rather the product be a monitor attached to the back of a seat or a stand alone device that could be held?
A device that needs to be held has it's own problems, you also need to consider cost. In the USA, only about 1.2% of people 18-40 are deaf/hoh. A screen in every seat is overkill. even in areas that have a lot of deaf people.
(yes I'm aware people who are not deaf/hoh would benefit from such a device but the total numbers are still very small)

5. Would the availability of this product entice you to go to the theater more often?
in #1 I said I'd go more often if captions were available but this device would have to work better than the current rear window technology, AND be in a nearby theater.

6. Would you also like to have a "speaker" added into the movie seat so it would transmit vibrations e.a. explosions on screen?
To answer your question, no I wouldn't like that. It need not be installed in the seat to make sounds like on-screen explosions be felt by movie watchers.

7. Would you be willing to pay a premium at the movie theater in order to use this product? If so what dollar amount would you suggest (lets say adult theater tickets are 8 dollars before premium.)
No, I paid $9 the last time I went to see a movie in the theater. Charging a premium for access to a captioned movie is like charging extra to use a wheelchair ramp.

I agree with you about that. I didn't actually like asking that question but it was one of the required ones for the assignment.

1. How often do you go to a movie theater?

I went to the movies with my friends about four times. That's it. I stopped going to a movie since I graduated NTID. Actually, my last time, there was a discount for deaf people four years ago. I am too busy, and the economy is so bad now because of George Bush's dirty work.

2. Would you use this product if a movie theater offered it? Yes or No

No. Maybe, I would go when I retired.

3. Are there any additional functions that would make the product more enticing to you?

I prefer closed captions on the screen. It is ideal for foreign subtitles.

4. Would you rather the product be a monitor attached to the back of a seat or a stand alone device that could be held?

No. It is too risk if some people steal them or damage them for no reason. Little kids may scratch the screens. Who knows.

5. Would the availability of this product entice you to go to the theater more often?

No. I'm sick of paying more. The environment room made me sick. I really don't know why.

6. Would you also like to have a "speaker" added into the movie seat so it would transmit vibrations e.a. explosions on screen?

Ha. Ha. Maybe, that would be something interesting.

7. Would you be willing to pay a premium at the movie theater in order to use this product? If so what dollar amount would you suggest (lets say adult theater tickets are 8 dollars before premium.)

Nope. Movie theater owners have a plenty of money.

Thank you in advance to everyone that responds. Again it would be really helpful to me.

1. About once a month, too expensive otherwise and very low quality of movies, selection. 2. Yes, I would . . . providing it is working and in use that day. 3. Spelling the words right; highlight the music (how it's performed, maybe by whom. 4. Stand alone device is fine, as long as it's not broken. 5. Yes, it would. 6. No. 7. Absolutely not. People ask me about my hearing dog and get that information for free. If I have to pay in order to be a participant in a movie, then I have to charge people when they ask to pet my dog or ask questions about her. Tit for tat, no such thing as a free lunch.
