Pick em up truck

ah hell Ill explain it
regular license (class F) operators.
Ticket lets say speeding is what 4 points and $200?
CDL
Ticket for speeding (in a regular car) is something like 6 points and $400-$600

now Im not accurate on those as I dont remember but I believe an operators license maxs at 12 points before they take it away, where a CDL they take it at 8 points.

so even being in a normal car, your CDL is your only license, they dont care if it wasnt in a commercial vehicle.

Highlander, I highly recommend if you are going for your CDL to get a copy of the CDL book at the DMV and read it, like you dont want to read the link, its not an easy test to take and pass. If you are arguing this I know you havent read anything about the CDL requirements. But please feel free to come back and say Jiro and I were right and you were wrong. We'd appreciate it.

yep. I recall an ADer in here... I believe TXGolfer talking about that. with CDL license, you'll risk higher fines.

this is right off a site I googled up.
Don't know where you're from, TIm, but here in FL, it is possible to buy a tractor and use it for a personal vehicle. Not very practicle, though, because many of the places you might go with a personal vehicle also have electrical wires hanging a bit low. Start tearing down overhead lines and the cost of the truck, itself, won't be much of an issue. But, my son-in-law used the same loophole for his hotshot. Since he only has one eye, he can not get a CDL. As the owner of the rig, he can get away without it. He still needed a physical and medical card (with a waiver for his eye). With a semi-tractor, you do run into a sticky situation with the air brakes and the endorsement.

I have seen a guy build a one-ton pickup into a semi tractor "look-alike". It was physically smaller, but looked just like a long-nose Pete. One of the "drive" axles was actually a dummy, and it had hydraulic brakes. But, hood, cab, sleeper, fifth-wheel and all, it looked like a Pete. If you want a tractor, that might be an option.

If you're looking into driving commercially in the future, start with the CDL. That way, you have it covered. But, when you're driving the tractor around as a personal vehicle, keep the height of the exhaust stacks in mind. I've seen overhead wires get taken down, and it's not nice. Especially, the aftermath of having torn any down. I've seen tractor and trailer damaged because instead of the wire or anchor breaking, the pole broke and was pulled into the rig. Nearly $10 K damages to the rig.

The DMV issues the tests and licenses, not the DOT... why are you waiting on the DOT?

I know you have to take the drivers part at specific places, here we go to a place run by the Highway Patrol. But it has nothing to do with anything other than passing the driving section.

Per your earlier question, I didnt need a CDL as I didnt have passengers or loads. Once I started hauling loads I had to have the CDL otherwise lose the position. Have you noticed all the people buying school busses and converting to RV type campers... no CDL needed. I can buy a SEMI and drive it as a daily vehicle with no CDL as long as Im not pulling loads for hire. Had one and I know quite a few people who do now as well. I no longer have my CDL because I dont need it, didnt want to spend the extra money for it and all the other crap involved with it ( you still get hit heavy with fines carrying a CDL, unlike a regular drivers license) if you want to argue that as well, just ask any drivers. thats your source for that first hand.

Not the DOT? Are you hearing or HOH?

Good for you. Few jobs won't let me drive semi-truck without LOADs on the public street. I was surprised that you can drive without CDL and I asked you for source but you ignored my question.

I already have CDL manual for IL and IA and I studies on it. You knew that I haven't read anything about the CDL requirements then How I knew about Class A to C?

I highly recommend you that know me more before you made bad assumptions.

If I have a CDL, where can I apply for a motorcycle permit or license?
You may go to any Driver License Section to obtain a motorcycle permit.
Adding a motorcycle endorsement (category 2) to your CDL may only be completed at the Commercial Driver License office.
Any changes that affect your CDL will need to be completed at the Commercial Driver License office.
