Where I used to live in NZ was in the North Island... did get bright stars but I was living too close to the Auckland City... the city lights. So when I going out for a long drive on the country roads at night time and away from the city lights on some weekends in the past to visit friends up North... beautiful stars that looks more brighter and closer.

Another thing I do remember going on the tall ship for a week camp... it was pretty neat view to see stars at the ocean during 3am for an 1 hour night shift watch.

I haven't seen the full milky way like stars but will do plan to see one when I visit NZ next time. :)

In Alaska I have seen very near this same scene with the same vivid colors. These kind of rivers and mountain scenes are everywhere up here. In February for some reason we start getting these kinds of beautiful skies. I will put up pictures here then. This picture is a slight exaggeration but not much. There are special days like no others now and then. There is a reason I am still here and still in love with this place.

I have seen similar pink lakes when I was flying over Australia from international flight New Zealand to Perth Western Australia.
