Pay Raise

Why are you embarassed? I am a teacher with a Master's and havent had a raise in 3 years. Plus, my salary had been furloughed with a total of $400 deducted from my paycheck each month.

Well, just feel embarrassed that I am not bringing home much money. :-P I used to work 2 jobs when I lived in WA state and brought home lots of money.

I am working 2 jobs now because of my pay not being enough. Life is tough for a lot of people because of the economy. I thought once I got my Master's, I would be set for life without any money woes. The sad reality is that cost of living surpasses earnings or the value of the American dollar isnt what it used to be.

However, if you want to move up or get a better job that requires a college degree, why not go back to school?

Thats sucks, your not alone. I went though no pay raise for 3 years (Not with my current job, thank god!) plus with that same company I worked back then, decided to freeze 401K matching program so I ended up get almost nothing.

I realize my current company benefits me far better than other job and my 401K from my current employer doubles than the previous job for same period.

Considering yourself lucky, there may be no benefit raise this coming fall meaning three years of same benefit amount though SSI/SSDI. So having job is better than SSI :)

Not all jobs provide pay raises.

My interpreting contract at the college is for a four-year period, which means the hourly amount doesn't change during that time. If I get the competitive bid contract for the next period (starting next year), it will probably continue another four years at the same rate. That would make eight years at the same rate. That's fine with me. It's better than losing the contract. :)

Hubby is a business owner/operator, so he never gets any raises. If anything, his income will probably continue to go down as gas prices go up. Sigh....

Yep about 3 or 4 times last year.

but is it worth it to keep this job cuz of rental car discount? I would say that with a higher wage job, you wouldn't even worry about the cost of rental car.

Yeah agreed.

How does 50% discount sound to you? That's half price at anytime of the week and anytime of the year. You can rent a minivan for $31 a day. The gas prices isn't gonna help at all when having a higher wage job by renting a gas guzzler.

Honestly, a rental discount doesn't impress me. I've been driving for about 37 years, and I don't even remember renting a car for myself once. Hubby rented a car maybe once or twice in his lifetime.

A rental discount would be no benefit for us.

I have never rented a car. It would have no value to me to have a rental discount instead of a raise. What is important to you?

Well, for one...saves wear and tear on your vehicle.

Plus, plenty of people I know would love the discount for renting vehicles. You also get to drive newer Jeeps or whatever. Thats your choice, anyhow.

Its cheaper than worrying if your own car breaking down on a long trip.

Um, vehicles are meant to be used. Why would I own a vehicle and not use it? I don't need another vehicle to add to a collection sitting on my driveway. Why would I own a drivable vehicle plus rent one? The only reason I can think of is if I needed a specialized vehicle, like a van, for a family trip. So far, that's never come up.

If you need to rent vehicles, then the discount works for you, and that's fine. I'm just saying that I have zero need for a rental discount, and would prefer to have more cash instead so I could use my money the way I want.

I think a pay raise sounds a lot nicer than 50% discount because pay raise pays for many bills. plus I would be able to save more money for myself... like renting a car if I ever need to.

Like Reba - can't remember when's the last time I rented a car. In fact, I've probably never rented a car for myself!

Yea like I said thats your choice. Your life, your money. It is a benefit to me because we love to drive and travel and leaving my car at home.

Didnt you rent a dodge ram truck last year?

true but.... the benefit of pay raise outweighs the benefit of car rental discount.. at least for me. If the benefit of car rental discount favors you more than pay raise... then keep the job.

I can just go to dealership and test-drive their new vehicles

Its cheaper than worrying if your own car breaking down on a long trip.
That's why I go for pay raise in order to buy a more decent vehicle so that I don't have to worry about it breaking down in middle of somewhere.

Lol if its a 2 dollar pay raise, then the rental discount wouldnt matter.

The only time we used rental cars was when our insurance paid for them, or they were part of a military assignment, so we didn't need a discount. We've never paid out of pocket for any rental vehicles.

Not always...my best friend in PA was thinking of getting a job as a teacher's aide at a deaf program in the public schools to help out with the bills since her hubby's job isnt going well. Well, she found out what the pay was and decided not to go for it. The pay was $12,000 a year so she got more from SSDI.

Two of our friends are working in that program and earning that much and cannot support themselves so they had to get a 2nd full time job. What's wrong with the picture?!
