Pat Robertson: Haiti "Cursed" After "Pact to the Devil"

I believe it is an act of God.

actually you are right. It is called an "Act of God" as stated by insurance companies :)

It's just another sign of time (damage done by humans such as poorly structured buildings and such , ruined by nature) , I doubt it is an act of God.

when this kind of disaster occurs in USA, the insurance companies write it off as an "Act of God". That's how it works.

It's not to be confused with the biblical context.

Quake labelled as Act of God? No way... it is caused by mother nature.. remember axis and earth is evolving..moving.. like dinsour periods.

Pat Robertson just does NOT know when to speak. He just likes to piss people off... I agree with most of you guys plus we need to shut him up for rest of his life. I do not understand why he is getting all the attention if he is just heartless. He needs to resign the celebrity role and shut the fuck up because the rest of his living years belongs on a couch where he can be found muttering. He digests me big time.

Haiti has my sympathy, they get some donation from us and friends.

Do the Haitians deserve calamity? No more than any of us deserve it. Perhaps the better statement would be, "I can't believe I've been spared calamity because I deserve it, too". We all do. If the Haitians are being punished for the sins of their fathers, then we should be also. If the Haitians are being punished for their present sins, we should be, too.

However, sin does have consequences. If a nation's leadership is greedy and corrupt, generation after generation, and its society follows ungodly practices, then the results can be a weak infrastructure, disease, poverty, bribed building inspectors, etc. These are the things that can destroy a society.

Every country that experiences traumatic disaster should turn to God, the same way all individuals and families who experience serious disease or injury, or major upheaval, should turn to God. For some people, that's what it takes before they honestly confront their sinfulness. But none of us knows why things happen. It doesn't really matter. What's important is how we react to the blows of life that we experience.

"Act of God" is a legal term, not a theological term.

"ACT OF GOD - A natural event, not preventable by any human agency, such as flood, storms, or lightning. Forces of nature that no one has control over, and therefore cannot be held accountable."
"Act Of God" Defined

"Legal term meaning some sudden and irresistible act of nature that could not reasonably have been foreseen or prevented, such as floods or exceptionally high tides, storms, lightning, earthquakes, sharp frosts, or sudden death.

Damage by such an occurrence may be attributed to the act of God, and in the absence of any contract to the contrary, no person can be held liable for it. Nearly all insurance forms and shipping charter parties, and most contracts, have a clause relating to nonliability in the case of an act of God."
act of God - Hutchinson encyclopedia article about act of God

"Act of God" is a legal term, not a theological term.

Even if it is used in legal contexts to explain some sort of natural disaster or unexplainable event, it's still also a theological term because it directly refers to God.

I think we're getting dangerously close to discussing religion here.

:nono:

The Original topic is about religion. how can one talk about religion news without talking about religion other than calling this person's religion view is stupid (which Pat is very wrong and not a smart thing to do). what type of discussion is this?

But what type of discussion is this when a person post an article like this and you can't talk about it.

Problem is that the above post got very little to do with the actual event in Haiti.

Societies rise and fall, regardless of their religion. Only thing they have in common with the fall of their empires are corrupted politicians.

I do think it's possible to talk about a pastor or preacher without talking about theologies though.

Pat has nothing to do with Haiti either. Posting an article about him is a religious news. And we can't discuss religiously why he he is wrong

Talking about Pat Robertson and what he said is very different from talking about how people "should" turn to God or "should" do this and that when a natural disaster or personal matter arises.

That's exactly what Pat was doing. He is telling us how people should turn to God as well.

Religion news begets religious discussion. sorry, but true.

Typical firestarter. Just like Ann Coulter.

I wanna be one. Let's see....

"White people get more skin cancer than any other race, therefore they are evil. It probably has to do with their race making the most money in the US. That's what greed does to you."
yeah like when they were saying that hurricane Katrina was God's way of punishing us because we are just a bunch of evil porn loving sex crazed money hungry greedy bastards. While I have seen religions evolve most are still in the stone ages. Maybe Pat needs to watch the history channel program "How the earth was made" to give him an understanding of Plate Tectonics
