Past C-Sections Narrow Options For Repeat Mothers

Thanks to the threat of malpractice suits, more hospitals than ever -- an estimated 300 facilities according to one consumer group -- have policies in place that prevent a woman who delivers her first baby by Caesearan from having any subsequent babies naturally because vaginal deliveries following C-section births have increased risk factors.

It's becoming a bigger issue these days, according to holistic and conventional medical experts, especially as the number of women choosing C-sections has grown to more than 27 percent of all births in 2003 in the United States and is increasing worldwide.

As it does most often, the cold, hard numbers really show a narrowing of options for mothers: The rate of vaginal births in women who have had Caesareans has fallen by almost two-thirds -- to 10.6 percent in 2003 from 28.3 percent in 1996. About 300,000 women a year have repeat Caesareans.

Why women choose natural childbirth over C-sections makes great sense to me: Women recover more quickly and with less pain than they do from a Caesarean. In addition, each Caesarean increases the risk of complications in the next pregnancy, so women who want more than two or three children often hope to avoid the operation.

Some experts are worried a ban on natural births after C-sections may force some women to try giving birth at home or in birthing centers that are unequipped to perform an emergency Caesarean if necessary. Moreover, some women, determined to avoid a repeat Caesarean, doctors said, have endangered themselves and their babies by staying at home in labor -- or even staying in the hospital parking lot -- until the last minute.

My mom had an C-section birth (during my last brother) and she wished that she never had one. She had been regretted ever since. Anyway, that's why I like the conception of midwives and natural births.

oops, I posted this topic in wrong forum. I am going to PM mods to move this topic to Health forum. Sorry about it.

It makes a lot of sense because one of my Deaf friends living nearby ended up in the hospital because she was pregnant and had like 4 or 5 c-sections in the past. It made her uterus and vaginal wall very weak and thin that you could see her baby move inside! She could lose her baby, but she didn't! She ended up on the hospital bed for like 2 months or so. The doctors told her she can't have kids anymore unless she wants to be bedridden during her next whole pregnacy.

There is concern because much of this increase in C-sections involves women with no identifiable medical reason for a C-section, So why needed it?

I think C-sections should be a needed when there a medical reason such as having the tube wrapped around the baby's neck or heart beat rapids.

I had both of my boys being born vaginally, and had midwife during my first one, She was so awesome and so friendly ;)

Yeah, I agree

C-sections should be needed only if there's an emergency like if the mother or baby is in danger ...

I had a c-section with my first child because the cord was around the baby's neck and his heartbeat was going down...

My first son was delivered by C-section birth after 36 hours labor pain. The doctors had no choice and has to do with C-section to save my or my son's risk life.

My second son was delivered by natural birth.

I compared the cons/pros between C-section birth and natural birth and must say that I prefer natural birth to C-section birth.

Some women have C-Section just so that their baby goes to school on time with every kid or they'll have to wait another year. That is silly. Some kids graduate a little later. It does not harm. There's also those women who do it because they don't have time and they want their father to see the baby before they leave for a business trip. Wow, some families just can't say no to a business trip. I see C-Section for life saving reasons. That's why we have vaginas to birth babies! I think doctors should restrict c-section for medical reasons. Yeah, I have read about some women giving births at home. Some women think that giving birth is not a medical condition, so they want a calm and comfortable atmosphere. Well, not all women end up in risk, so it's up to women what they want to do. It's their life and their risk. We can't stop people.

Yes, You are sure very lucky, Women like us don't like that. :giggle:

My oldest son, he came two weeks early, I had to endure 8 hours of contractions, 2 1/2 hours of pushing, finally came to world by natural birth with one epidural and piticon (sp?)

my youngest son, who is now 9 months, I had to be induced because I was walking around at 3 cm dilated for a week, having false labors, dr decided to induce me at two weeks early also, 2 hours of contraction, 5 mins to push him to the world by natural, 3 epidurals - all FAILED !!!!!!!!! due bad job by aethansist (sp?), I got real MAD and told her to leave the hell out of the room...pushed my son in 5 mins, no difference from contractions. go figure....two hours later, all my three epidural set in lower body for all nite long....what an experience.

my friend had to have two csection because her hips did not drop and was too small to deliever her both babies. her recent son was born dec 1....I support csection for emergency reasons, hips not dropped, heart beat declining, cord around neck, breech, etc etc etc.....

When i was pregnant with my son, my dr and nurses heard of his heartbeat up and down from Mointor. I was struggled to pushed him out. Damn..so Dr said he can felt that he was big shoulder to get out as struggled from inside of mine. He suggested me Vac (suck him out). If not work it out, last choice was C-section. But my dr knew me as 5 yrs and hated C-section. But lucky for me, I was 3 times push same time with Vac from Dr. He came out. His breath was hard and his heartbeat was very fast which was not look Normal to me. I was so Freaked out and asked everyone what was wrong with him. No one knew it. Until he was 3 days old, i found out that he have heart holes and Today he is healthy and big boy.
Also i have seen my friend who already had 3 C-section with High Risk pregnancy. 1st was Staple, 2nd was Tape, 3rd was I am not sure. She hated it so much cuz C-section was ruined her tummy which always Sag skin. She wished that she have natural birth but can't. She is short girl and very small pevis. No choice for her. That s why i dont like C-section the way i seen her tummy. It was freak me out.
