Paper Shredders

What kind of paper shredders do you normally use?

  • Straight cut shredder

I have a straight cut at home, and a cross cut at work.
 
I don't have paper schredders at home. Why should I own schredder machine at home? Simple is tear the papers and throw them to paper cupboard.

I use paper schredders in the office at work place.
 
Dumb question... is there anything that never breaks down?

I have shredder that is now about 4 years old, and I haven't had any problem with it. It cost only 40 dollars. Once it breaks down I buy new one, no big deal.

My few papers got stuck inside the machine, and it was broken. I could not fix it because the plastic is sealed (no vision of screws and nuts on it). I burn my papers, and it is just like a free service... :D

Our tax man told us to keep our records for three years.
 
Kitchen Blender

For disposal of sensitive documents on paper, I'd tear them up in small pieces and put them through the hole through the lid atop a kitchen blender half filled with water and whurling at low speed. The resulting pulp mixture is then flushed down the toilet or used as papier mache or anything that calls for paper pulp.

Strain the water out of the paper and mix in a dollop or 2 of wallpaper glue and you got paper clay to play with.

Same here. We are on our second shredder. They are not expensive, so it is no big deal. It is worth the security.

Because identity theft is the fastest growing criminal activity now. The papers that I shred at home have our names, addresses, birth dates, Social Security numbers, drivers' license numbers, account numbers, phone numbers, medical information, etc. I don't want other people stealing that information.

Hmm, Nas' friend (IRS agent) told us to keep our records for 7 years. My mother said the same thing to me several years ago as well.


I have a "straight cut" shredder and I tend to shred the personal informations included 'advertisements' that came with our address or names on it. Maybe I should get a cross cut shredder instead... Oh well.

As my friend once joked that there is a 100% foolproof method: Use the personal information or bank statements as toilet paper right after number two in the bathroom.

I understand now why it is be safety.

Honestly, I was like puzzled at first when I read all of the posts here because we don´t have like this in Germany but most schredder used for businesses. I would do that if we have high criminals around Germany.
 
Criminals have ALOT of patience! hand ripping document is easy for them to piece together, like puzzle, no two ripped papers are exactly alike. Much easier for crooks to figure out. Shredder, thousands of piece look alike, much harder to tape together. Once crook got everything together anything can happen, your stolen identity would be sold to plenty of crooks, and be used against you without your knowledge.

Before 1990, ID thieves were largely unheard of. In the beginning 1990, ID thieves would milk out thousands of dollars against your name. then you are basically STUCK with mountains of debts that you never applied nor request. Your credit is SCREWED UP. No one cares! In 1994 first ID thieve caught in New Mexico (True story). She used one lady from Denver's name! Ruined her credit. Went to court, guess what? Because there was no law against ID thieves, that crook walks! Thanks president Bush for FINALLY making ID thieves liable, and be punished in 2002! Now ID thieves can face 10 years jail term if caught. But still, ID thieves is one of easiest crime to cover up shits, and leaves no trail.

Somebody suggested use kitchen blender, not bad idea! But, I wouldn't do that anyway. Reserve blender for food only for health safety reason.

Good thread..There are some good suggestions how to find a way to shredder. I heard it has to be 4 years keep for bank, tax, stubs, etc. How soon should I keep for personal info in general to be shredder?

Disadvantage is I don't have fireplace but at least I use straight shredding machine. Yep, at Wal-mart is alot cheaper to buy a shredder machine. No big deal.

Wow! Blender is not bad idea. I never thought of this. It would be nice to have two blenders, one is for food and one is for shredding. Is working well?
 
Blender jars

Just buy an extra blender jar and you need to mark the jar that is being used to destroy documents.

Charcoal grill will do the trick, unless your apartment complex prohibits use of grills.

Really, the more destroying documents the better. You can always decide what is best for you. But remember, THINK WHAT CROOKS WOULD THINK.

blenders don't work well with paper, ur belng silly. Shredders work better with paper. :)
 
Yes it does! Don't you know how papers are recycled? This method is pretty much how it is done! All you have to do is just simply add water. It WILL work! Speaking of recycling, they do run huge blender mix specific amount of water, with bleach or something to whiten them then when it is all blended they went though high pressure press to make it thin again, and once it is dry there is new paper once again!

Interesting. I didn't know there is a huge blender at recycling. :)
 
The blender method is too slow for me. We shred too many personal and business papers. It is much quicker to feed the shredder.

Our tax man said that we don't need to keep all the original receipts, etc., for more than three years. We only need to keep copies of the filled out tax forms for seven years.

I also shred all my interpreter job related papers, such as assignment requests, to maintain privacy for my clients.
