Old People Do Smell, But Not That Badly

Some of the odor that elderly people exude could be from topical medications (good ol' Ben Gay cream) or from their medications that they ingest. The chemicals in medications can excrete odors thru the skin pores.

I started noticing that for the first time in a close relative! I was like, "Oh no, here it goes..." She is late 70s now.

My mother has always had a fear of water. It was always hard to get her to shower, but she does faithfully 4 times weekly. (I just mention it and meekly she goes). She does have dementia and she will forget, but it just takes a reminder.

I do know some people have a problem climbing over the side of the tub to get into a shower and can't afford to get it redone. They tend to bathe with a washcloth at the bathroom sink.

Remember that old saying..."You know you're getting old when you smell like Ben Gay!"

That sounds more like a hygiene problem, like maybe they need to change their Depends.

You better hope that people are more sensitive to you when you become elderly.

hygiene problem my arse...it was freakin brutal.. smelled like urinal with full of urine. :pissed:

I had a great elderly customer....super nice guy that was mid 80's....Poor guy popped himself alot and apparently couldn't feel it. It was so sad.

I hated working on elderly peoples homes in the winter if they were living in the house. The heaters were always cranked up and made it like a stinky oven.....

If it wasn't poor hygiene then what do you think was the cause?

My elderly neighbors are the same way with the thermostat. I practically pass out from the stuffiness and heat when I visit them, which is at least twice a week. In the summer they only turn on the AC when I go over there.

Many elderly people also have cats. Even one cat seems like too much if the litter box isn't kept clean. :eek3:

I suspect also that elderly people's sense of smell is diminished so they don't notice how things are.

Yeah, that is my guess too....and the thinning blood keeps them feeling cold

When my grandmother was cold she used sweaters, slippers, and lap robes; she didn't crank up the heat. :giggle:

When I get cold, I too add layers instead of cranking up the thermostat. Much cheaper than overheating the whole house. Also, I don't like the stuffiness of stale air.

Same here....I rarely use the heater

Wirelessly posted

Also remember that the elderly take more medication. Certain medication can make you smell different through your sweat or urine.

That's so odd because my grandmother is in 70's and I don't smell her, just smell like normal.

Same here, overheating make me so sweat and feel like hot flash.
