We need to take away their driver's license. Old people who are 75 and older
should not drive. :Ohno:

Man Drives With Pedestrian's Body Through Windshield
93-Year-Old Man Suffers From Dementia, Was Stopped After Driving Through Toll

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (Oct. 21) - A 93-year-old Florida man apparently suffering from dementia probably won't face charges after running down a pedestrian and then driving with the man's body stuck through his windshield.

Police say Ralph Parker was eventually stopped at a toll booth on the Sunshine Skyway in St. Petersburg.

A spokesman for the state attorney's office says Parker didn't appear to know what happened or where he was. The victim has been identified as a 52-year-old man.

Parker's license was renewed in 2003. He had been living alone since his wife died in 1998.

Miss P. I can understand your sentiments. However, a blanket statement like that is too extreme. There are some 75+ year olds that put 50 year olds to shame in terms of physical and mental fitness. Think about it, with more and more people living longer, a person might live to 100 and not allowing them to drive after 75 is twenty five years of confinement!!! It is really a case by case situation where probably some people 75 and over should not be driving and many others be restricted (no night driving, to the doctor and etc). It used to be that spouses, children, close family members could tell the "DMV" to take away the person's driving license. No more, there were too many instances of abuse where a perfectly fit driver was forced to give up driving.

Unless you live in a highly urban area with mass transit opportunities, driving is critical for one's independence and ability to live alone. Take away somebody's driving privilege is basically forcing them to depend on others and it is often very isolating.

The best solution would be where the state requires annual renewals for older drivers with tests for physical reactions and mental alertness. This would weed out those needing restrictions and those that should no longer drive. Since driving is a privilege not a right, that approach should work pretty well.

It's not a matter of old people not driving. It's a matter of their mental capability. They should develop a new kind of test at the DMV that determines these things.

i agree with you they SHLD set up a mentality test after the age of 60 so we can determine if thier fit to drive.

I am strongly for the fact that elderly people should have to renew and retest every year, but for those that do not pass the test, what is there to stop them from driving illegially? I doubt all of them would stop, since they have been driving forever, and in their mind they are good drivers.

Here is the problem... The organization known as AARP and they are growing exponently. They are now very powerful organization, how can we start the debate on wheather to disqualify a person from drivers license? Those AARP WILL fight all the way against this idea. AARP would say this is totally discrimination based on age! I read an article about this, because of alot of allies and relationships between politicans and AARP organizations, this will have negative impact on those politicans and none of politicans wants to touch this issue at this time. At this time, there is no easy solution.

I understand your point, and if there are some elderly people who are not healthy, they should not be driving. I feel that the elderly needs to take health tests twice a year to ensure that they are healthy enough to drive.

In Florida (where I live), people over 80 have to have a vision test...it's required before they can ever renew their license. If they pass the vision test, they can have a new license...but if they didn't pass it, they will be referred to an eye doctor.

Here's a link about this: http://www.hsmv.state.fl.us/ddl/vision/index.html

I DO support the idea of disqualify senior citizen whenever they poses threat to other drivers, and people as well when they are behind the wheel. But again, WHO wants to deal with the legiatative issues? I am sure many of these politicans also near or knew their retirement will come up and do not want to pass the bill that would give them chance of losing their own license.
Real American do NOT like the idea of losing their own license! I personally hope I won't have to deal with this before I die!

:topic: To take this in a slightly different direction, you are so correct about the AARP. Think about it...more and more people are living longer and getting older, who do you think will be voting in the politicians... Worst yet, they will do it by screwing the younger people because they can... You want to change the social security system...well good luck as these older folks will vote in politicians that keep the system in place and more plus they couldn't give a hoot what it does for the younger generation. They simply "ain't" going to die conveniently... The only nice way around the dilemma is to have more kids and out number them in the long run. Sad thing is, it isn't going to happen.

She have been forgetable.. shes 68.. she took kids, kids told me how was she driving.. scary!.. she sometimes forgets that she is on the wrong lane.. she endangered my kids lives.. I stopped letting her pick up or taking our kids for ride or rides.. I drive and meet her to drop off.. where she likes to spend time.. she is very upset about me trying to take her license away..

I told her.. for my kids safety..

I agreed.. older people shouldnt be driving.. 60's.. eh

my grandpa is late 80's.. and can't drive due to stroke in past. but still have drivers lincense.

i agree and also miss pinocchio needs to stop driving, she is crazy woman!! I AM KIDDING, MISS PINOCCHIO!!!

Personally, I believe both young/beginner and senior drivers has the potential of becoming dangerous drivers.

Young/beginner drivers are inexperienced and often don't pay enough attention to the road and the mistakes that they make which is why the insurance rate is so HIGHHHHH for people in that age range, from 16 to 25.

Now, the seniors. They do have the potential to become dangerous drivers if their health are declining at a rapid rate. Nobody should be barred from driving as long they are qualified to do so.

The young drivers starting from 16 to 25 should be tested annually along with the seniors being tested annually once they hit the big 65.

Yes, I do believe the young drivers should be tested annually because a lot of them shouldn't be driving because of their naiveness. I'm not out of the age range yet and if there is such a law to be enforced, I would be perfectly willing to be tested because I know I'll pass because I'm a serious driver and pay attention to what I do.

Canada law..

In Ontario..
Must 60's over.. require eye test and driving again.. every year..
That pain ass!

my grandma drives until she was 91 until she got sick and she stop driving
