Nomination was placed after Obama was president for 12 days. The nomination was based on prior work...or in this case prior "work."

Again with the 12 days. Another point that has virtually nothing to do with the nomination. Likewise, you seem to be unable to understand the difference between nomination submitted, and nomination confirmed. And the committee has already, as I stated, very concisely stated what they took under consideration in awarding the prize. Shame you can't be bothered to read their explanation, and instead hold on so tightly to irrelevent and mistaken ideas.

We have to admit that being elected president is an achievement. Even though it's not the sole reason he was nominated, it is worth noting that he was indeed the first African-American president ever to be elected, and was also a symbol of hope and change for many people who cringed through the Bush administration.

His being elected was simply confirmation of the fact that his ideas for peace were well received by the public and something that this nation, as well as foreign nations, were ready for. It is that impetus for change that was the deciding factor for the committee. The fact that he was elected by a landslide is simply confirmation that the committee was correct in their extimation of the impact the has the potential to have.

Of course, that's not a reason to get the Nobel prize. :)

Should race be a deciding factor?

Is symbolism a factor over substance? :dunno:

Exactly. Very good questions. How about gender? The first female American president? I'd say, no. Those should not be used as a deciding factor. It should be based on the actual merits of actually achieving with real, tangible results. Not just on words alone.

And we wonder why so many people gasped when they announced the name? That raises the very spectre of something that doesn't smell right. Even Obama was confused about this.

People gasped when Obama was elected, too. Fortunately, they were in the minority. Gasping is not an indication of something "being fishy".

All that gasping was surprising; the group seemed very shocked.

Regarding all the debate about the criteria and judging: nothing has surprised me about the Nobel committee ever since they selected Arafat as a winner for the Peace Prize in 1994. I figured they finally "lost it."

What did he accomplish during those meetings?

not accomplishment but a work in progress (or negotiation). We'll never know since it's behind the door.

What's to wonder about? They are the same ones that have been gasping for years.

yes. they gasped when Britney Spears and Madonna kissed in live tv. They gasped when there was "wardrobe malfunction." They gasped when Pelosi said :nono: to lobbyists hanging out at Congress and its facility. They gasped at pretty much everything.

GASP GASP :-o

Yet scratching their heads, figuratively so, comes to mind. So, again, it's like awarding first place to a wrestler who never went to the mat but based it on his previous practices as the gold standard and reason for the first place win.

For the DB community here,

The graphic on the letter kokonut provided..

The graphic is circular, metallic and bronze.

There's latin inscriptions around the man facing left.

The man is looks like he is bald but he has thinning hair and it is parted to the side. He is facing the left. He has a strong jaw.

His nose is very narrow and his lip is pursed.

The emblem is a beautiful graphic.

Hope this helps, my DB family. :ily: <ILY>

:ty::ty: Mrs. Bucket.

Really?

The decision to bestow one of the world's top accolades on a president less than nine months into his first term, who has yet to score a major foreign policy success, was greeted with gasps of astonishment from journalists at the announcement in Oslo.
President Obama wins Nobel Peace Prize

A work in progress? I wonder if that would be acceptable for the Nobel Prize in Literature? An author could be judged on his book's outline rather than waiting until the book is actually published.

a very good hypothesis! :hmm: but does each category have different criteria?

Man, these "requirements" and "qualifications" get more surreal as a reason for being nominated.
