NY motorcyclist dies on ride protesting helmet law

I do know that here in FL motorcycles do not require helmets and I think it is totally asinine. But then, I have never been on a motorcycle and I think I am too afraid to try.

I've been on a motorcycle (with a guy I was dating in college) and we did a little dirt riding. Didn't wear helmets. I fell off, but fortunately knew how to fall without hurting myself due to having taken judo. Plus it was on the dirt, not on a road, so the ground was a bit softer. I would never even think of being on the open road without a helmet.

Kristina, how old are your kids, and what kind of riding are you talking about? All the kids in our neighborhood wear their helmets. You just never see one without it these days.

You're the mom. Assuming these kids are still living with you in your house and are under age 16 or so, it should be YOUR decision, not theirs, as to whether or not they wear helmets.

After my friend died, all those years ago, I quickly got religion when it came to wearing helmets.

My kids are now 16 & 17. When they were first learning to ride bikes, we lived on a gravel road with only 5 houses on it. Maybe 6 cars a day traveling on the road. None of the kids ever wore helmets there. Her where we are at now, no kids at all wear helmets and I am speaking about bicycle helmets. Son has said that if he ever gets on a dirt bike or motorcycle he will wear a helmet. Whenever daughter tried to wear a helmet that was fitted to her properly at the bike shop, she would have seizures for some reason. Doctor could never figure out why. We'd take the helmet off and no seizure. They think it might be heat related, but they do not know. She does still get very sick with extreme heat and has had seizures due to it. Both of their bike currently have more than enough reflective stickers and both headlights and taillights. All lights strobe which our local Sheriff's officers said was better than a steady light.

Lights are good, but that has nothing to do with hitting a bump or something.

How bizarre that your daughter would have seizures from wearing a helmet!! I've never heard of such a thing.

Well, good luck to them, and I hope they stay safe.

My 14 yr. old is a skateboarding fanatic. (several years now). We've fought constantly about his not wearing his helmet(s)....He's never broken a bone and just only a few scrapes here and there, but he does take a lot of risks with all the jumps and grinds he makes....However, I'm sending him to Skateboarding Camp this summer, and they require a helmet at all times! Plus, he will watch some films about it.

At home, he does take his helmet along to please me....but as soon as he gets to the Park, he throws it down, (I've caught him several times).

Peer pressure is one of my pet peeves among teenagers. They think everything dangerous is cool.

It was heat related. I get the same thing. Even if she wears a hat or a bandanna to cover her head from the sun, she has a seizure. I am the same way.

No helmet law in SC unless you are under 21 years old.

However, I am going out tomorrow morning for a ride. I never leave the driveway without my helmet on my head. Never attached to the motorcycle.

p.s. as you can see in my avatar, no helmet but still on my driveway.

I always wear a helmet when riding the motorcycle with TCS.

Funny thing is, as a child, I never wore a helmet skating, bicycling, or skate boarding, and the worst I got was skinned knees. I never rode in a car that had car seats, head rests, or seat belts. The dashboard was a death trap of chrome knobs, handles, and sharp angles. :eek3:

He wasn't really smart was he? -_- That's what helmets are for.

And you're darn lucky you are alive. So am I! I never wore seat belts when I was a kid, I don't even remember having baby seats back then!

Yeah, me too. I don't think biking helmets were even made for kids then. It never would have crossed my mind to wear a helmet while riding my bike, and my friends and I used to ride all over the place. Our parents were not the kind who would drive us wherever we wanted! It was walk it or bike it, for years and years.

Sometimes I think well, we worry too much, let kids take the same risks we did. And then I think of my friend who died at age 21, just out of college, while enjoying a beautiful June day on her bike, and I'm back to "Get those helmets on those kids' heads, pronto!!"

Better to be safe than sorry.

Troopers say Contos would have likely survived if he had been wearing a helmet.

IMO - not really. If he was fishtailed and superman'ed... that means even with helmet on - he was speeding at the rate where he would have most likely sustained a permanent brain damage, paralysis, or death.

No, they didn't have baby seats back then. My daughter had one of the first baby safety seats that were made. It was the GM Love Seat, and had to be ordered from GM only. That was in 1973.

Until I was a teenager, none of our cars even had seat belts much less shoulder harnesses or headrests. The first car seat belts were like airplane lap belts.

Same here.

That's what's wrong with people nowadays...

They always think, "It won't happen to me!"

They see other single women getting knocked up and they think, "Won't happen to me!" It does!

They think motorcycle helmets aren't needed and they get hurt because they didn't wear their helmets.

They see someone getting in trouble for doing something wrong and think it won't happen to them cuz they're more careful. They get caught!
