With all due respect, Vampy. I don't think it's selfish of him to want his hearing back. I also would like to be able to get up out of my wheelchair, and walk. The difference is, there's a vast difference between wishful thinking and being realistic and accepting what is.

Steve, you really need to accept what is. Do not pin your hopes on Stem-cell research. Even as wonderful as it could be, nobody knows how well it's going to work. It certainly is not the "miracle cure" it's touted to be.

You have a point, but when they really begin their research, there's going to be alot of uses for it that's not gonna be so "worthy". You are going to have scientists looking to regrow hair cells as well as the kidneys and other organs.

Cosmetic surgery is the same way. You've got surgeons who repair the faces of accident victims, burn victims, ect. But, you also, have the 38 year old woman who goes in to have her face lifted, because, she has few frown lines she'd like to get rid of.

That's life, unfortunately.

If someone came to me saying, "I wish I was hearing. I hope they do find a cure using stem cells"... I'd say that was wishful thinking. However, if this person was someone who constantly blames God, blames his doctor, blames his friends, blames basketball games, blames EVERYTHING for his deafness without accepting the fact that he is deaf... then I'd say that's being selfish.

It's a matter of how you act in front of others. If you were always on time at work, you always did your job, you worked well with everyone... then out of the blue, you're late. Do you think anyone cares? Nah, they love you... they know it was an accident or something. No harm done. If you were constantly late at work, you didn't always do your job, you didn't get along well with others... then out of the blue, you're late again. What will others think? "Oh dear, he's late again... argh!" Yes, the others would hate it. That's because you weren't such a good person in the first place.

The same phrase has different meanings when coming from different people. ;)

WTG, Ocean. I, too, am tired of this bullpucky vigilantisim going on here even if.........

:gpost: And, I do agree with you. I honestly do. I was just trying to point out that, sometimes, you need to seperate the statement from who said it. I guess I'm looking atfrom my own perspective, as me saying (in a wishful thinking sense), "Gee, I wish I could walk..." I don't go around promoting a pity party. But, on the other hand, I have to be quite honest and say there have been times when I've played the "I wish game..."

That's all, Vampy. I'm not really disagreeing with you. Just pointing out a different viewpoint. :)

Let me also point out something else: In no way, am I trying to say that growing new hair cells isn't worthy. It's extremely worthwhile for the deaf. But, put that up against curing cancer, and, you see my point.

:fingersx: I hope???? I feel like I just put my foot in my mouth. :dunno:

Oh, for the love of God, Steve. Will you please just give it up?!

It's been said to you before, but you're DEAF. So fucking what?

I was born with a hole in spine. I can't walk, Steve. I've never taken steps under my own power, ever. But, you know what? SO WHAT? I took what I had, and did the best I could with it.

We're all just alittle bit tired of your blantant attempts at these pity parties. I've tried my best to cut you a break, because, I know it was a shock to wake up one day and be profoundly deaf. But, now...accept it. You are NOT winning any points with me. And, you're not winning any points with anyone else here, either.

I didn't say what I said to Vampy earlier, because, I was defending you. I said it as a reflection of my own thought process now and then. I'm human. I feel bad about my circumstance every now and then. However, you've taken pity and risen it new heights.

Grow up, Steve. You're life is the way it is. If stem cell research can help you, fine. If the CI can help you, great. Look to those things, and be grateful they are there. You're not the only deaf person on the planet, so stop acting like you are, and going deaf is the most horrible thing to happen to someone next to the Black Plague.

It's rough, but most people learn to adapt.
