New Oklahoma Driver's Licenses

Each to his own opinion! ^_^ "Hearing Impaired" is a label that implies Deaf people can be "fixed". I like my deafness and Deafness.

I agree with you there MsGigilz,...

For Example : If I was in a home or an office being held by a gunman....I Would want the police to check in their computer system to id who I am and when they do see the deaf icon on it they are aware that I'm deaf and find another way how to get across of me.....or the police will let the other officers be aware that there is a 'deaf person' in there and not to kill the wrong person!....

There are alot of reason why we should have those deaf icons on our driver id not only to save our lives but to make others aware of who we are and how to be able to commuicate with us....

I never heard of it before but I really never thought about deaf icon, but no one tell me about this til now. but does it charge for add new deaf icon ?

According to the definition of "hearing impaired", you are unable to hear, your hearing doesn't function properly, your hearing is disabled.

Vampy -- in this event i have to say i disagree cuz the word "hearing impaired" is so BROAD!!!!!! it could mean a 1 Db hearing loss to over 100 Db hearing loss -- its just simply IMO too broad!!!! what if they think "this person has more hearing" then starts talking and then realize thers no response in the first place then they have to approach or gesture then they will get a response -- so personally i do not see how "deaf" is discriminative -- it is something that has a very specific type of hearing loss -- can hear NO sounds without hearing aid(s) and the hearing loss would be categorized as over 70 Db (this is based on my estimation) to be truly deaf as opposed to "hearing impaired"

exactly what i was thinking too Deaf258 before i saw ur post!

The debate over Deaf and Hearing impaired marking on driver licenses......

I envy me wife :P cuz despite her being HoH, she sweet-talked the TN Dept of Safety into not putting Code 28 on her license while I got the codes 04 and 28 on my license

Too bad I cant have "Deaf" put on my driver's license because TN uses restriction codes on the licenses instead of wording.

The cops when they look my license and recognize Code 28 they know for instant that Im just a Deafie behind the wheel after I point finger to ear and shake my head at the cop pulling me over. Worked the same in Indiana when I got pulled by a sheriff for speeding and the Indiana cop was able to recognize Code 28 because Tennessee include an explanation of codes on the back of each license.

Oh well I just fanned the flames of fire with my mention of the wife getting
away with her license unmarked!

So, you're telling us that you refuse to listen to the cops? You're refusing to listen to other people? That's what you're sorta telling everyone else. According to the definition of "hearing impaired", you are unable to hear, your hearing doesn't function properly, your hearing is disabled. According to the definition of "deaf", you lack in sense of hearing or you are refusing to listen. Now, "deaf" has a double definition and can possibly be used against you.

People should accept the word "hearing impaired" and move on. It's a drivers license... not a use of slang or proper social wording. You can always tell people that you're deaf, but "hearing impaired" is just for their records. Not everyone knows what "deaf" means... "hearing impaired" is more recognizable.

I don't agree that having "DEAF" on my licence means that I won't listen to the officiers. I have always been courteous to the police in the past, and that won't change anytime. I agree with Deaf258 that deaf is a better word for me, despite what people may think about it. If people ask me about it, I'll just explain to them what it means. And also, I have used my driver's licence with "DEAF" on it to get discount ski tickets here in Utah as well. The lady knew what it meant, obviously.

Another thing, why don't the states rename their schools for the deaf as Schools for the Hearing Impaired? It would be funny if I worked for USHIB (Utah Schools for the Hearing Impaired and the Blind) instead of USDB (Utah Schools for the Deaf and the Blind). So, Deaf is quite an acceptable word in the eye of the government, if they think it is better to name their schools that way.

edit: how about this - USHIVC
"Utah Schools for the Hearing Impaireds and the Visually Challengeds"

Did somebody forget that "Deaf" has been a more RECOGNIZABLE word for centuries than "Hearing Impaired"?!

That was until the Politically Correct era.

so then "Politically Correct", my ass!

Me either, I never heard of having deaf icon on a driver license either but it does sound like a great idea because, it can also save your life...

No, there shouldn't be any charge to add deaf icon on your driver license...But however, I live in the state of Ohio , Ohio state hasn't start on new driver licenses with deaf icon adding on it but I would love to see that on my driver license for alot of reason :)...

No, when I was in New Jersey, they used stickers too with that symbol, and didn't cost me anything to add. And having "DEAF" on my Utah licence didn't cost any extra either. I think it is same idea as if you have to drive with corrective lens (glasses), it is simply put down without charge.

Rather DEAF than Hearing Imparied.

Why? "Hearing Impaired" make some hearies think they have lipreading. Feel "Deaf" is more powerful word to me.

No additional charges. Only need proof of Deafness and you're set.
