None of the African governments ever did anything to protect any of the ape species within their boundaries. That is, until the 1970’s—when they suddenly discovered that western tourists were willing to pay big bucks to see them. Then their tune changed really fast. But the DR Congo doesn’t give a fat rat’s ass about western tourism—they’ve been involved in a 40 year long civil war, and no white people have ventured in there in a long time.
