Tonight, we adopted a 3 month old puppy girl. She is a mixed Blue Heeler collie. I am very excited about having a pet. Finally after wanting one for so long and a pet for my son to grow up with just like I did when I was a little girl.


To those experienced dog owners, as soon as we brought Lily home (yes, we named her Lily), she refused to budge from one area and seems so nervous. It has been 2 hours since we brought her home and things are still the same. Is that normal?

Any advice or suggestions would be helpful since I have never been fully responsible for a dog or puppy. Last time I had one I was a kid and my parents did most of the work.

It is normal for her as she is in new strange home and new family, it will take her a while to get used to her new home and environment, once she's settled and know everyone else in the house and it will become her home.

Congrats for a new puppy added to your family member and Lily is a nice name for your puppy. :)
 
wow, congrats for add a new puppy to your family.

Give her something to play with and chew like bones, rubbers etc to aviod for damage your furniture. Without toys, rubbers, etc... the dogs and cats chew the furniture to keep their teeth clean and shape...

take her every few hours to out .... so she will understand where bathroom go! :)

Awesome! CONGRAT!

Yes it is normal for puppy...same with Tahoe when we brought her home and she was soo quiet for a day or two. Then after that she understood it is her new home and happy to have us! :) Just give her a time....she'll get there.

yes it is normal once when i got my dog he was kind of nervous at first he camped out on the couch for like 3 days then he got use to the place and he had been home for 8 months now he is doing great
 
How is your new puppy Lily doing now? By now, she should reasonably be adapting to her 'new' environment. It's always a 'great and wonderful' kind of joy bringing a 'new pet' in a home anytime, wishes you, your family much happiness and many great memories being created--congrats on the arrival of Lily. :)

Give LIly a time to get to know you and your family... it takes time... just keep petting her.. taking her outside to do the business... and play with her.... she will start playing after couple days...
 
Thanks everyone for the nice compliments and advice!

Lily is a lot more comfortable now but still has some of the shyness in her. It is like she still isnt too sure of us yet or maybe that will be her personality. We'll see. She is very good about staying in her crate overnight so no howling nor barking. Woudlnt matter to me but my hubby is hearing. :giggle:

She is still kinda exploring the house right now...a few accidents in the house. GRRR...since I am a neat freak but I have to be flexible.

This afternoon, when I was cooking dinner, my 2 year old and Lily went upstairs. They refused to get down so I had to go up and carry both of them down one at a time. When I got my son down, Lily tried to go up again so I grabbed her mid-way up the stairs and then my son tried to go up. AAAHHH...then believe it or not, I burned dinner. My hubby had to eat burned tacos...:bowlol: Too bad for him cuz I am alone with those two for 3 hours before he gets home.

So, I put the baby gate on the base of the stairs...problem solved.


As for pics, I took some..just need to download them into the cpu..my hubby has the camera at work. He forgot to bring it home.
 
^^Ahh...another one to chase around in the house or elsewhere--heh. :lol:


Am sure that Lily will eventually come out of her shyness--give her a couple of weeks and update AD'ers then. Hmm?? ;)

You can start training Lily to go outside to do the business... by taking her outside staying with her until she do the business... then pet her for being so good dog.... bring her back indoor... take her outside about every two hours...
 
you can give Lily puppy treat AFTER she did her business and say good girl that make her feel good that she did it like i did with my dog when he did his business and i give him treat and said good boy yay he was so proud of himself for do it believe me it works
 
Sounds like your son and Lily will be inseparable and always up to something! :)

Cool about the new member of family. Enjoy her as long as she's around.

When I brought Snickers home for the first time, I kept the leash on her and gave her a tour of the house, letting her take her time. After I did that, I put a bowl of water down where I would be feeding her so she would know that this spot is for her food and water.

The first night, she slept with me on the bed and urinated right in the center of it. No, she was not scolded, as that is anxiety and I know it. I never said anything to her whenever she had an accident in the house and rarely ever has done it.

Since the girl dog is small, it wouldn't be a bad idea to hold her in your arms, walking her through the house and showing her everything, including what's behind the shower curtain and sounding the toilet so she can identify that in the future. I always allowed Snickers on the bed, so that may be something you may want to do so she can see where you (alpha dogs) sleep.
