Movie BLINDNESS

It's a movie. Gosh.

If they made a movie like "DEAFNESS" and everyone became deaf due to a virus. They can't find their way around the caves because at the exit, there's a music playing, "Beethoven". Does that offend you? I'd laugh if they failed because I'd use my NOSE. The key to survival is indeed to use your nose, instinct.

well this is cool. some of you really get it, and some of you dont. We as the nations blind have been trying to show people that we can live normal lives. this movie shows the opposite.

I do get what you're saying. However, this movie is not about blind people. It is about a virus affecting everybody to suffer white blindness, then shows the chaos that unravels as a result. It's basically a disaster movie rather than about blindness itself.

You can read the summary on the plot of the novel which the movie is based on to get a better idea of what the movie will be about.

Blindness (novel) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I've seen some movies where they portrayed the blind people badly and to get laughs from the audience. Like in the movie, "Road Trip." That was kind of tasteless.

Let's just not turn this into another The Passion of the Christ-style controversy because it's not going to be.

I agree.

We should keep an open mind when watching these kinds of movies.

i know, and i know its just a movie, but do we really need to reinforce stereotypes? A lot of people already think bad enough we dont need things to get harder.

Do you know what? you are not the only one going through the stereotype of being discrimination of being blind and was told that you could not do those things. Well, we deafies and HOH have been told many times over that we are not capable of taking care of ourselves either. We get upset with movies that portray deafness that we are suppose to lipread them 100% and talk almost normal or normal with good speech. :ugh: Yeah, sure we get some movies that produce the sign language, but not much. Anyway, they are just making the movies for the money and the author or bestseller get more money doing that, that is my guess. We are on your side that it is stereotyping and we don't like it either. You are not alone and you are just like us, Deafies and HOH who are discriminated by the hearing population.

NFB - NFB

you should really read this. it explains everything. we have seen the whole movie.

Thank you for the link. Though I will have to reserve my judgments once I see the movie. The claims may be greatly exaggerated or not.

I'm not going to call for a boycott over a movie that I have yet to see. I didn't call for a boycott of the movie, Babel. Then I watched it, then expressed my opinion of the movie itself as being somewhat weak. it had some strong characters while some characters were badly portrayed. For instance, the deaf character. They tried to make her character appear sympathetic but I couldn't feel for her because it just didn't feel real to me. But I didn't tell anybody to not watch it. In fact, I told them to see it to see how they portrayed the deaf character and let me know what they thought.

Boycotting a movie will not change how a person view a blind person.

We HAVE seen the movie.

huh? how? and by the way... the movie is scheduled to be released on Oct. 3rd Friday... so... did you see the sneak preview or something? btw - since you're blind... which I'm assuming you have a complete loss of eyesight... how did you see the movie????

... yes, because 'blind' means 'completely blind' and it also apparently means 'incompetent', which is why it's unthinkable that a completely blind person would watch a film.

I personally haven't seen the film, but I have read the deplorable book it is based on and I stand with the NFB as a member of the family who knows that the NFB has done so, so much to make my life better.

We HAVE seen the movie.

Okay. You are free to express your opinion of the movie, but don't tell us what movies we can and cannot watch. We are free to watch whatever we please to.

Boycotting the movie is not going to change anybody's perceptive. You know that.

and deaf doesn't always mean completely deaf. So it gets little confusing there and it also apparently means "dumb."

which is why it's unthinkable that a completely blind person would watch a film.
yea exactly. Which is why I'm confused by hjones711's post saying that "we have SEEN the movie."

I don't really know how will this Blindness movie will make your life any more miserable. :dunno: So please - just don't get overly sensitive in here. There are movies that make a dumb joke based on stereotype and other movies that are based on unknown fear. This Blindless movie is the latter so no I don't find it offensive. Mr. Holland's Opus is the latter as well.

American Pie and Scary Movie are the former... Boycott that.

people from the national federation of the blind have. i can see a little bit, though i am legally blind. and yes, it is appalling.

really, i dont care what you see, just remember that its hollywood.

ah... my apology. Dang it.... you get to see it before the opening date. Well I will judge it for myself so... stay tuned..

by the way, not overly sensitive, i just don agree with discrimination.
alright. sorry to hear that. I was basing my judgment on movie trailer so sit tight and wait till I watch the whole thing but I'm not too happy about $10+ movie ticket.

thank you!!!!!

What I don't understand about this movie, is the blind people are obviously also suffering from quite advanced stages of senility. They cannot even go to the loo or dress themselves so obviously blindness is the least of their problem. Then they also turn to crime which would be physically impossible for a person with that degree of impairment to undertake. So whatever way you look at it the movie doesn't make sense.

By the way. I'm not for Political correction.

I like the NFB and their policies.
