WASHINGTON (AP) — More than 40% of Americans take at least one prescription drug and one-in-six takes at least three, the government reported Thursday.

"Americans are taking medicines that lower cholesterol and reduce the threat of heart disease, that help lift people out of debilitating depressions, and that keep diabetes in check," Health and Human Services Secretary Tommy G. Thompson said in a statement.

The annual report on Americans' health found that just over 44% of all Americans take at least one prescription drug, and 16.5% take at least three.

Those rates were up from 39% and 12% between 1988 and 1994, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported.

The report, "Health, United States 2004," presents the latest data collected by CDC's National Center for Health Statistics and dozens of other Federal health agencies, academic and professional health associations, and international health organizations.

Americans' life expectancy increased to 77.3 years in 2002, a record. And deaths from heart disease, cancer and stroke — the nation's three leading killers — are all down 1% to 3%, the analysis said.

The study also found that spending on health climbed 9.3% in 2002 to $1.6 trillion.

Prescription drugs, which make up about one-tenth of the total medical bill, were the fastest growing expenditure. The price of drugs rose 5%, but wider use of medicines pushed total expenditures up 15.3% in 2002. Drug expenditures have risen at least 15% every year since 1998.

The report said prescription drug use was increasing among people of all ages, and use increases with age.

Nearly half of all women were taking prescription drugs — 49% — compared to 39% of men.

Usage peaked at 84% for people aged 65 and over, with the top rate at 89% for black women over 65.

Even for people under age 18, however, nearly one-fourth — 24.1% — were taking at least one prescription medication. The rate rose to 34.7% between age 18 and 44; for those ages 45 to 64, it was 62.1%.

Wow. Just wow. It is pretty sad to see that... Americans are getting sicker every year.

I am wondering if we are ACTUALLY getting sicker?

In the past, we had a higher level of cholestrol that was "Safe" now they decrease these standards, so we are "less healthy"? ?

Or, is it the influence of the pharmentuals (sp) upon the doctors to prescribe some more??

I dont know, but I am glad I am not in that stat.

I believe so. Heart disease is practically nonexistent in 1880's but now, it is in top 5. Diabetics too, is practically nonexistent back in 1880 - 1900's but now? It is in top 5. Americans definitely are getting sicker every year.

Obesity issue in pre-Industrial Revolution is practically 'myth' but now you can see anywhere.

despite that stats -- i do NOT like taking man-made meds so i tend to use non-medicinal ways to recover from various ailments whatever may strike me be it the flu, cold and whatever -- im stuck with ONE to control my hypothyroidism  and i rarely go to the doc's office unless i HAVE to for bloodwork for my Rx to get authorization for refills when i run out of authorized refills

plus the costs of healthcare has SKYROCKETED -- doctors are trying to make a profit, scammers scamming the medicare industry for those who are poor or in need of public medical assistance if their own healthcare insurance doesnt cover enough (this being particularly true for the elderly)

the costs of prescription medicines has also SKYROCKETED forcing many Americans to go north into Canada or south into Mexico to get affordable meds that they need

Let you know that not all of doctors do. Many doctors opposed the ideas of giving the medicines to solve the health problems, they know that it will not solve the health problems. They were 'forced' by hospital policies and pharmaceutical companies, if they did not follow, their medical license will be revoked and 'black-listed'. It means that they cannot get the job anywhere in America. It is pharmaceutical companies who are trying to make a profit out of these struggling americans. Governments are part of it as well, i.e. FDA. Drug patent alone cost 250 - 500 million dollars and know where the money go? FDA.
