Mold ... on drywall...

DeafScuba98 asked me to make this thread since he's at work.

I have a mold (black/grayish) on drywall and I'm wondering if painting over is is the best idea or should DeafScuba98 buy new drywall?

Wash it with bleach, it should come off, it not , then got to replace the dry wall, but do not paint over, molds are dangerous...

^Angel^ is right molds are dangerous. How big are the molds anyway? If they're really bad, REPLACE them.

You might want to tear the wall down and check the pipes leak. It can cause mold..it is very dangerous...

If there's leak, fix it and put new drywall...it happened to our bathroom downstairs...we couldn't figure out where the leak came from...found it inside the wall...pipe was leaking! So it already fixed. :)

Yep ^Angel^ is correct, don't paint first, have to wash it with bleach, That's what I do when I have mold on the whole side of the tub in my bathroom. It works! ;)

Ok, use soap to wash it lightly and, then use oil-based primer to cover it. Make sure to open the window for the fume to go out from the inside. If, you use water based, the mold will go through it.. so, it is best to use oil-based primer to paint over it after washin' it with water and soap lightly. ;)

Yep, that one - you got it right. ;)

No, do not wash it with soap, it doesn't help much, you can kill the mold and wash it off with a solution of chlorine bleach and a detergent. Actually, borate-based detergent is preferred to avoid the smell and health hazards of chlorine. Or spray the concrete floor and walls with our Efflorescence Cleaner. Besides removing efflorescence ("white powder"), this industrial-strength oxidizer also kills all molds and biological contaminants. Make sure you wear a mask and rubber gloves....

I found a link that would help with the drywall, http://www.cmhc-schl.gc.ca/en/burema/gesein/abhose/abhose_ce08.cfm

Moldy drywall:

clean the surface with a damp rag using baking soda or a bit of detergent. Do not allow the drywall to get too wet.
Mold that comes back after cleaning is usually an indication that a source of moisture has not been removed. Seek professional help from a trained IAQ investigator.

First, find the cause of the mold/mildew If it is in bathroom, the chances are due to poor ventalation, also monitor your water usage, if it is higher than normal then you might have pipe leak. Paint won't solve problem. And FYI to some degree enough amount of mold and mildew can KILL you, especially when pipe is leaking, and it can produce enough mold/mildew to lethal level.

mildews from too much humids or leaking. that cause. Hopefully, its only room temp. that cause. it would be no problem to paint, alike CC sinned said, it should help that what my friends house has those problems. If not.. it will come back if its abit, that mean something is bad alike leak or need new drywall. Have fun remodel eh..

Ahh for me better get brand new drywall.

When I live with my cousin for almost one year but couldnt stand it cause I get sick in 4 times in same month of August and I miss it out my job so I decided to move out and live with my sister. My cousin and her kids move out isnt safe for her kids which she have 3 kids. I couldnt stand or go near if have mold it will make me feel sick.

maybe better to buy a drywall ? :)

its in the basement, not in the bathroom.. we are trying to find something to make one room for fun and activity time for all of us after this drywall is fixed.

also it caused by flooded basement years ago when there's a heavy amount of 8+ inches of rain in 1 day.

Oh basement? Sigh! If walls were installed improperly and not allowed to breathe properly, then your looking for trouble! Normally when install insulation and drywall, should NEVER touch the cider block wall or concrete walls, need spacer to get it seperated, then properly draining the leak is critical to prevent molding and mildew. So, you might well have to tear everything down and doing it RIGHT way.

Ahhh, the basement. When I was growing up in Minny, we used to use a de-humidifier 24/7 during the warm months. Then in the winter we would use our humidifier to put some moisture back into the air....

Edited to add: That KILZ product works great as it is a stainblocker. Be sure to get rid (kill) of the existing stain first. The black spots will still show but the fungus will be dead if you use bleach or whatever. I believe KILZ is also a primer so all you have to do is paint over the KILZ after it dries. A lot cheaper than replacing the drywall if the current drywall is in reasonably good shape. KILZ comes in quarts as well as gallons so head on over to your nearby friendly Home Depot or Lowes....
