Manchester Teachers Banned From Wearing Jeans
Manchester Teachers Banned From Wearing Jeans - New Hampshire News Story - WMUR Manchester

MANCHESTER, N.H.

School officials in Manchester who want teachers to spruce up their attire have passed a dress code -- and a student dress code is pending.

The Manchester school committee voted 11-1 Saturday to enact a dress code for teachers that bans 15 clothing items starting Sept. 1. Should teachers violate the dress code, they could face disciplinary action.

"As a professional, we should dress professionally," Manchester School Superintendent Thomas Brennan said. "I don't think we need to wear jeans, sneakers or any of those items. It just gives the wrong image as far as I'm concerned."

The school committee's list of unprofessional and inappropriate teacher attire includes:

•Jeans
•T-shirts that have writing, pictures or are considered underwear
•Tank tops
•Shorts
•Sweats, wind suits and gym clothes
•Spandex
•Flip-flops
•Sneakers
•Tops that are low-cut, cropped, tube or have spaghetti straps
•Sheer clothing
•Short skirts that are more than 2 inches above the knee
•Skirts with front slits more than 2 inches above the knee
•Clothes with holes
•Pajamas
•Facial piercings

Physical education teachers are excluded from the dress code, and teachers can wear sneakers for recess or for one-day events.

The mayor and School Board members said teachers will not be alone adhering to a dress code in the classroom. Next Monday, officials are slated to consider a student dress code and a student code of conduct.

"We're having that discussion and we'll be taking votes about cell phones in schools and dress codes in schools and conduct, and what we're going to do with discipline problems," Manchester Mayor Ted Gatsas said.

Gatsas said the new student dress code could ban items including shorts, mini-skirts and flip-flops.

many million teachers can chose wear pro clothes monday thru thurs peroid! But teachers can wear jeans on every friday only!!

my old school have no school codes but my old teachers dont cares about dress codes than any public school!!

what your opinion?

I think a lot of it makes sense, but the jeans and sneakers don't seem to me to be that bad.

Oh, not surprised, that's much worse than my old high school.

I think it's a shame that teachers don't have enough good sense to know how to dress professionally without being told. Don't they realize that they are not college students anymore, so they shouldn't dress like they are?

I know when I was in school, the teachers never wore jeans or sneakers except for the PE teacher. All of my female teachers were in dresses or skirts and the men were in pants, tie and jacket. (most of the schools I attended had A/C)

My High School has teachers who dress very professional. Usually on Fridays it was considered Casual Friday.

Teachers would come in with nice shirts, jeans and shoes. (not sneakers)

Fridays usually were game days so the Staff, Teachers, and Students pretty much dressed in their school colors or uniform.

I don't approve of a Teacher that will come in wearing clothing that really is not appropriate in front of students that are impressionable.

Need a dress code for students tho.

I can not tell you how many times I have seen a 13 year old girl wearing shirts that shows off their cleavage, or wear short shorts to the point that their butts show.

My teachers dressed like professionals as well. They wore T-shirts and jeans on pep rally days or field days but that was it.

I think teacher who work with babies preschool children should be exempt from this strict dress code.

I agree with this in a day care/childcare setting, but if a preschool program is part of the public school system, even if it isn't housed in a public school, they should follow the same dress code as the other school staff.

I agree with the Manchester school board. Teachers ARE professionals and want to be treated that way. They should present themselves as so. Casual Friday is fine, to a point, with reasonable cut jeans and casual tops. Even sneakers are fine with me. No low-cut, tight fit jeans, low cut and/or sleeveless tops and NEVER EVER flip flops.

Strict? You don't mean the dress code posted above, do you? That's a very minimal dress code.

I think it is up to teachers, long as they are looks manner to students.

It is strict. That's my opinion. No jeans? I disagree with that.

So, what kind of jeans then?

A lot of people are wearing aged, acid-washed, torn, tumbled... Blah, blah, blah.

Not everyone wears professional-looking jeans like Jiro.

Those professional jeans like Jiro..they are sooo comfortable. I always feel restricted in some pants..would be nice to wear jeans on Fridays.

to me it seems strict, though I agree with a bit of it, such as the pajamas and underwear
it's hard for me to imagine that going over in the high school I went to.

I agree it is a minimal dress code but I think they go a bit far when they ban jeans and sneakers completely. Everything else seems fine and it should be that way. Why not make a small compromise and allow teachers and staff to wear jeans on Fridays as so long as they don't have holes in them and are not acid or stone washed and not excessively tight or baggy. Maybe allow only dark wash jeans? Those tend to look nicer. As far as sneakers go, I think whatever is comfortable as so long as they are not dingy and beat up nor loud and distracting in the sense of color and design. (I'm talking about people who wear bright pink/purple/neon green/black sneakers)

My School's dress code is smart and presentable.

I can wear jeans as long they are completely solid colour ie all black or dark blue, no patterns/holes

we can wear sneakers/trainers/flipflops as long they are smart looking types and not old and worn out.

As working at deaf school we can't wear busy tops for example too flowery as the students needs to look at you when you are signing. We can't wear chunky necklaces as it would be too noisy if you are wearing the microphone for FM system.

It's COMMON sense, if you have a job, it's respectful to wear appropriate clothing/hair style/and piercings.
