Man drives 17 miles wrong way

I heard about this on the news yesterday. This man is VERY lucky that he didn't kill somebody. He avoided 60 - 80 cars! What are the odds? :eek3:

BELLEFONTE, Pa. -- Police said a man drove 17 miles in the wrong direction on a Pennsylvania interstate before being pulled over.

State police said the Florida man appeared confused when he was stopped early Tuesday while driving west in the eastbound lanes of Interstate 80.

The trooper who pursued the SUV said the driver had a can of beer on the console and was slurring his words.

The trooper told the Centre Daily Times that when he told the driver that he had traveled 17 miles in the wrong direction, somehow managing to avoid head-on collisions with 60 to 80 vehicles, the driver seemed confused.

The trooper told the paper that the driver said, "What do you mean?"

State police were called early Tuesday morning about an SUV traveling west in the eastbound lanes of I-80 at mile marker 156. A trooper said he came upon the driver at mile marker 141.

Police said John William Fisher Jr.'s blood alcohol content was measured at .216 -- nearly three times the legal limit. He was arraigned on charges including driving under the influence, and jailed in lieu of $20,000 bail.

I have seen drunk driving on other side of the highway, there is no way he or she can switch to right side of the highway because of barrier in the middle. I followed him or her up to the crest and was fear that other driver may drive up on other end of the hill... NOTHING! WOW!!!!! He or she is very lucky, cuz no accident, no cops! I was the only one who witness everything.
Recently somebody drove the wrong side of the interstate for 5 miles and poor on duty cop didn't know that she was going into his way and both of the drivers got killed. That happens about 2 months ago down here where I live.

This reminds me of a joke I heard years ago...
As a senior citizen was driving down the freeway, his car phone rang. Answering, he heard his wife's voice urgently warning him, "Herman, I just heard on the news that there's a car going the wrong way on Highway 280. Please be careful!"

"Hell," said Herman, "It's not just one car. It's hundreds of them!"

It occured to me one time back in mid 80's. When I was a late teen at the time. Whew!

I drove southbound on a state highway where it had low-mid hills. There was a car heading northbound on the southbound side where I drove on.

Just so luck that I drove on the left side while that stupid driver drove on the right side. And it was at the uphill at the time .. so lucky!

You couldn't tell what's coming from the other side of the hill while on the street or highway.

I didn't know what happened to that driver or others afterwards. I didn't tell my parents about it or they may have freaked about it, you know.

By the way I saw a news clip about an elder lady driving the wrong way without an accident for some miles, too, quite recently.
 
Yea it is dangerous. It happened to me. I was on my way home from the social of course no alcohol at that time. But I was on the highway almost coming to 2 way lane. The next thing I knew there was a car pass me on the left. My brother at that time was with me punched me cuz this car had one headlight on. I told him, Cant you see he is driving on the wrong side of the highway. He went oh yea you're right. Once we got home. My brother called our mother who were out and she told him to call the cop. He did. So I dunno what happened after that.
 
A student in my high school died because of a driver who was passing on a 2-lane road and was on the wrong side. She pulled the wheel to the LEFT just as that driver was going back to his lane.

The lesson our government teacher made sure to tell the entire class is this: Go for the shoulder on the right--even if there's a ditch or trees. You're more likely to survive if you hit a stationary object than hitting a car in a head-on collision.

For most cases .. yes, they can spot ahead on a flat ahead you can tell that it's coming your way .. but it's impossible on the top hills only when you drive uphill while others from the other side of the hill. If you go downhill, you can spot it likely.
 
Yeah, true. That's why I always get off of my brakes for just a second when I come up on a hill. That way, I can react just that little bit faster if something IS coming.

Back when I was in high school, a friend of mine was killed when a drunk driver was going the wrong way and took an exit ramp. My friend was coming down the ramp about to enter the highway and struck the drunk driver head-on on the ramp.
 
Drunk driving should bring an automatic 10 year prison sentence!

What's worse than driving 17 miles the wrong way is spending
two hours trying to install a deadbolt and finally realizing the
screw won't tighten because your turning it the wrong way. :crazy:
 
funny thing is that you would find most people appeared drunk on traffic and highways than at parties or any other kind of occasions.
