heheh..well, all it takes is common sense -- as Deaf Drew Carey is quite obviously male cos of his 'Drew Carey' imitation -- You know the famous Drew Carey of his own TV show...'The Drew Carey Show'? That bloke's MALE. :P heheheh

Of course, some don't have that much common sense to make that connection. ;) No offence!

well, I grew up spend half life at mainsteam and deaf school.. I would say no big different between these especially i would probaly blame on the socialize's influneces also, It can from Teachers. or Parents or Dorm supervisiors for not being help them with the homeworks etc .. that what it become of the habitats ( hope right word to say) Sometime the people have different common sense to figure out what to do after HS sometime they choose downhill path.. There is so many different ways to do .. but in my own Opinion i most prefer mainsteam school myself but for sports of course at deaf school ! That's differences ! I know i don't give out enuff informations about the opinion but i am willing to debate or whatever u names it !
 
deaf skool vs mainstreaming

Well.. it would depends on WHERE you went, your level of intelligent, and your motivation. I come from Deaf School where they push me, they taught me everything same as hearing school and I entered RIT without taking any NTID courses and will graduate on time (4 years bachelors program). it is all because my teachers at deaf school saw that I was motivated and had intelligent capabilities so they push push push me learn more.. and Thanks to them, I'm having no problem with school! :) :D

<edit> Oh dear. This post has touched a nerve with some personal friends. I will make a better explaination what I believe in:

Recreational and elective courses (art, theater, PE, music) should be offered at the Deaf school while required courses (English, Math, reading, history, science) should be offered at mainstream schools. And the Deaf or Hard of Hearing student could go to both, to learn to be socially and educationally smart. Balance is the key.

Well, I'll have to agree with both comments here and above. It's true... unfortunately.
 
I agreed with you, Deaf258, on taking courses at both deaf and hearing schools and balance is the key. I attended a deaf school for a year in my H.S. and they put us in art class at a hearing school. Just ONE class and that class I already took like 3 years before. Ugh, I really hated the counselor. She was horrible. No one at a deaf school has high expectation in every students.

As in "Socially Stupid" at hearing school, I sometimes felt that way when some hearing kids came up to me and asked to teach them sign language. I was trying to be friends with them, it barely works. Other than that, I felt fine because I had my own good hearing friends group to hang out with most of time.

"Street Smart", it's true, you got to find a right person to be friends with because honestly there are too many backstabbers and jealousy going on in deaf community. It was very first time ever happened to me when I was at CSUN. Also, first time ever for me to live in a deaf community. Man, it was sure sick! I love to hang out with deafies but I just can't live in the community with them!
 
MHO....Deaf and hoh kids should start out at a deaf school, and THEN get mainstreamed! I think a part of the reason why academic acheivement levels are so low, is b/c although we have an early intervention system in place, not too many people in the public EI system are trained to work with deaf/hoh kids. Most of the time all an EI therapist knows, is a handful of basic sign. Then the kids get into the public school system, and they're faced with staff and teachers who do not know anything about teaching deaf/hoh kids.
Freaky, how long ago were you mainstreamed? B/c mainstreaming without 'terps or notetakers is VERY illegal! Actually, I was mainstreamed without a notetaker for a very long time. (and I also have hypotonia which makes it very difficult to manually write) I never even got the services of a teacher of the Deaf/hoh! Didn't even know there was such a thing as an itenerant TOD until a couple of years ago!
 
I, Myself was in mainstreamed school all of my life. I not see why I should be in deaf school for what? I liked my schools but High School *cough* forget it! ;)
 
I was mainstreamed from a very young age until 10 years old. My english, math, history and all those subjects sucked. Why? Because I was sitting in my classroom doing speech all day and when I got tired of it, I decided to go in my hearing classroom and just sat there while the teacher was writing on the blackboard and talking at the same time. I knew who were going bald and who weren't and most of the students in my classroom didn't notice. :D

When I transferred to the deaf school, I was focusing more on my subjects and of course, I got better and learned more there but sadly personal problems got in the way and I didn't bother with school and eventually dropped out. I think it is because at the mainstreamed school, I was never taught how to get used to the way things worked in normal classrooms. I was taught to sit on my ass all day with shit in my ears and smelling teachers' bad breaths.

I believe that in order to do good in school, a child need to be in a classroom that matches their needs AND parents who are very involved and supportive. That child would be sucessful almost guaranteed. Deaf schools have better education now. There is a bi-bi program in elementary schools at the deaf schools in Ontario and I have met many young students and they have the same level as hearing students but they are more smarter because they have two languages.

Yeah I have to agree with you there. I have always been mainstreamed but I always have gone to schools where there's a few deaf people there so I could have deaf AND hearing friends. It was pretty good going to a hearing school so I could learn to interact with hearing people as well. I still sometimes wish I went to a deaf school where everyone signed and the technology was heaps better at a deaf school I visited in Melbourne, the only private boarding deaf school in Australia I think. The technology was adapted for deaf people.

Also, if the subjects they wanted to take at that school weren't available, they could go across the road to a College with hearing students and mainstream in those lessons. I think that's a pretty good idea. I went to hearing schools that had facilities for the deaf (Deaf units) so I could have interpreters and notetakers when I needed them. In high school, they had difficulty providing interpreters for me because of funding problems, but they managed.
 
I do agree that there should be a balance of mainstreaming at hearing schools and attending deaf schools for particular subjects. Like someone said in here -- should have english, maths and so forth to be at the public school and be mainstreamed...and the rest at a deaf school plus for socialisation purposes.
 
Why can't we concerate on fighting for deaf schools education to improve instead of putting kids in mainstream classes? Everybody has a right to get what they want. I know many deaf people usually want to stay in deaf school but they usually don't have courses that are equal to the hearing schools. Everybody has a right to choose and the schools need to change.
 
I started school when I was two years old. From that age to around seven years old, I was at a deaf school, though not state nor residental schools. It was more like a school that's for deaf children. I mean, it was on a campus of a college. Normally, they transfer children to an elementary school when one is eight years old. But, I graduated one year early because I was intelligent and a fast learner.

So, I transffered to the elementary school when I was in second grade. I was mainstreamed in some subjects such as science and math, among others. I stayed with my teacher of the deaf for some subjects too. Though, by the start of the fifth grade, I was mainstreamed in all core courses.

Then, I moved on to middle school that had a deaf/hoh program, also. However, I was totally mainstreamed in all my classes all throughout my middle school years with a sign language interpreter, of course. It went the same for my first two years of high school.

I just transferred to my home school, which has no deaf/hoh program, meaning that I'm the only deaf student there. Though, there is a deaf teacher at the school, also. He teaches ASL classes there. I'm in an ASL class, so that I can meet people who know a bit of sign language. I have aid of a notetaker and interiant teacher (though, I don't think I really need that.) but with no sign language interpreter. Because the public schools system here just plainly sucks. However, I and my parents are fighting for one.

As for providing a good education for deaf children, it really depends on how the child are motivated and greatly on parental involvement. I'm lucky that I have parents that was willing to learn sign language so they could communicate with me. You see, I'm the only deaf person in my family. I think all those aspects is what counts for a good education.

I have plenty of deaf friends (well, the people that I call friends). But, I don't talk to them much on the internet because it's quite hard to understand them. For writing, English is my language. For communication, ASL is my language. I don't know that many deaf people that's on the same grade level as their hearing peers. I was the only one who passed both parts of the FCAT (a state-wide test, Florida), which we have to pass to graduate on the first try. People I know who had passed the FCAT but at their fourth try or so. I feel bad about that. I want to try to help them. But, I don't know how.

So, there really is many aspects that can contribute to a good education for deaf/hoh children.

Hey Guys,
I was surfing on people's profiles on tickle and came across this. I felt like I should tell you my story. My name is Kayla and I'm 16 years old. I grew up in a deaf program from elementry to middle school. Half of my classes that I took in middle school were mainstreamed and in a deaf classroom. But as I got older and had to move up to the high school, they did away with the deaf program. So I had to go back to my homeschool and mainstream classes there instead of being with the deaf. So I went and got an interpreter and mainstreamed classes there. Im now a sophmore at this high school with a interpreter. Its really hard because I dont really fit in socially but I do fit in educationaly in a way. But I miss my deaf friends so much that I grew up with. My deaf friends had to do the same thing as me, go back to their homeschools. It was hard to separate us because we were practically sisters and brothers that I never had. Im doing ok in school but its so hard to concentrate on my school work in the first year. I could always feel the people staring at me, it was like people were burning holes in my back. It was extremely hard. Im trying to fit in with the hearing people but I know that I will always be deaf inside of me. Both of my parents are hearing and they want the best for me. So they treat me hearing as much as possible. They make me use my voice and they dont know sign language. The only time I use sign language is when Im with my interpreter and my deaf friends. I think since I went to a hearing school, it made me feel the need to be in a deaf culture. Thats why Im planning on going to Gallaudent University for college. My mom and dad arent so happy about my decison. They might stop me from achieving my dream to be deaf and proud of it. Sometimes when they talk about me being deaf, they talk about it like its some awful plaque or something. It sickens me. I know I would have to keep trying to show them what my world is like and it makes me happy. Well thats mostly how I live my life being deaf everyday. Well, hope I didnt bore you guys to much but I figured to tell you anyway since everyone else does. So thanks for letting me spill out my feelings or whatever. Well see ya!

Me thinks that would be an excellent idea. Mainstreaming would still be an option, but if the education at deaf schools improved then maybe more hearing people would send their kids to schools for the deaf. I know that one reason why a lot of parents want to mainstream their kids is so that they get a good education, since the education in the deaf schools(and ALL deaf schools....not just ASL Deaf...oral schools can be academicly bad too, especially since most of those kids don't have a good grasp on spoken language) tend to be so bad.

There's teacher taught you somewhat and have not made taught you enough which too many groups in the classroom.
Cannot their time to tutor you each of student.. whatever who really wanted become A-ACED class. Impossible way to out for you thinking which best for you attend mainstream or Deaf School.. Doesn't matter where you prefer to go.. Take your time and study best education suitable for you attend to...

me.. I know my english grammer isn't puncatual (sp) proprite structual sentence.. Doesn't matter how much you felt about this same thing like me.. whoever fault ? It's education school hasn't taught you enough much more than 100%
