Because the ones in the pet store are made for pets, its not the same thing. Do you buy canned cat food to make tuna salad?

I have been making jerky for years. In the beginning I marinated beef strips cut thin by the market. Overnight soaking in a mix of pepper, soy and teriyaki. Dried it in a four-tray table top unit. It was ok but tough to chew.

Later, I bought an eight-tray Nesco dehydrator with a temperature control knob. The trays fit in the dishwasher. It makes jerky within 24 hours at 155 degrees. You do not have to babysit it. I use different flavored packets of dry mix. I think the original flavor from Nesco is great. I also order specialty flavors from Cabelas. These packets come with an ingredient to keep it fresh without refrigeration.

Now for the special part, I use lean ground beef only. Mix it and put it in a jerky gun which can produce flat 1-2 inch wide strips. People cannot tell the difference between beef strips and hamburger. It is also much easier to chew.

I use serloin roasts, I have my own slicer so I can slice it thin to thick....I like mine tough and chewy.

This afternoon I made Hot wings and drummies, MMMMMMMmmmmmmm good they are. tomorrow, another batch.
