ILOAM SPRINGS, Ark. (AP) - Shayna Richardson was making her first solo skydiving jump when she had trouble with her parachutes and, while falling at about 80 kilometres an hour, hit face first in a parking lot.

Although badly hurt, she survived - and doctors treating her injuries discovered she was pregnant. Four surgeries and two months later, Richardson said she and the fetus are doing fine.

"Just this last week we went and saw the doctor and we've got arms, we've got legs, we got full face," Richardson said. "The baby is moving around just fine. The heart rate looks good. So not only did God save me but he spared this baby."

Richardson, 21, of Joplin, Mo., was skydiving in Siloam Springs on Oct. 9 when her main parachute failed.

"I heard a snap and I started spinning and I didn't know why. I didn't know what to do to fix it. I didn't know how to make it stop," Richardson told Fort Smith, Ark., television station KFSM.

She cut away her primary chute so her reserve could deploy, but it didn't open all the way. She spun out of control, heading straight for the asphalt below.

"At the end I said, 'I'm going to die. I'm going to hit the ground. I'm going to die,' " she said. "I don't remember it. I don't remember hitting the ground. I don't remember the impact or anything that came with it."

Rescuers got her to a hospital in Fayetteville, Ark., where Richardson underwent surgery. She broke her pelvis in two places, broke her leg, lost six teeth and now has 15 steel plates.

"I went into the first surgery where they cut me from ear to ear and they cut my face down and they took out all the fractured egg-shelled bones and put in steel plates," Richardson said.

During treatment, doctors found that Richardson was pregnant, which was a surprise to her. She said she would not have jumped had she known.

"To hit the ground belly first - that's dangerous. I mean at any stage of pregnancy that's dangerous. That's not something you want to do let alone at 50 miles per hour," Richardson said.

Her fall was videotaped and Richardson said she was able to watch it, without qualms.

"I wanted to watch it," said Richardson. "And the whole reason I'm comfortable with watching it because I know how it ends."

Richardson said her due date is June 25. She plans to make her next parachute jump in August.

50MPH head first impact on asphalt surface? NO WAY anybody can survive this! Im not sure the validity of this story!

Wow, she is so lucky to be alive and also very lucky for her fetus to be alive.

Hmmmm, you are right. Now I am wondering if that story is not real.

I saw it today on TV news. Another sky diver videotaped the whole thing. It was awful! I could hear the other guy yelling, "cut the rig, cut the rig!".

Really?
Im not sure if 50mph is accurate, if she were gone at 25MPH, MAYBE can survive. You know, 50 mph, it is much like standing in the middle of highway and have 18 wheelers hit you, would you be able to survive? I really don't think so.

OUCHIES!!!! but she is soooooo lucky to be alive and the baby is alive too whew! look like she is speical lady and save the baby whew. that risky eh

People have survived bad falls at high speed. Of course, the faster you go, the LESS LIKELY you'll survive...

she may have actualy ben going faster http://hypertextbook.com/facts/JianHuang.shtml

I got the story off a CBS site but the site i posted had more detail so this story isin a few reputable places I know a jump is survive able just not plesent I have a freind that had his shoot fail on him broke both his legs and arms to I think that also was caught on video and this guy is a profestinal jumper.

Yea, I wasn't trying to discredit anything. I just find it very difficult to believe.

Well...she is one very lucky girl to survive the fall. And so is the fetus, too!

damn!!! that's crazy I wud never want to do a thing like that but lucky for her.. she probably didn't know she was pregnant til she got to the dr.. she's only 21?!?!?! I wonder if she's with some1 or single? ;) I just hope she changes her mind about doin that again cuz if she does that again she wud risk to lose her life over something like that! if I was her I wud wait til my kid is 5 or 10!

Just saw on the news about her ,, wow I see her face was pretty till now as I see her front teeth is missing , the eyes are big in anyhow wow. I see her that she was doing outside to skydiving and hit the ground really hard .... She said will do it again skydiving after done pregnant .. she said she love it skydiving and will do it again oh wow she is so brave want to do it again .... not me i dont want go on skydiving forget it lol

I've seen that on cnn.com and I am in awe that she is very very lucky along with the fetus to survive that fall. Not alot would be able to survive that kind of fall and get away from it. Miracles does happen whether u believe it or not.
