This doesn’t really belong in General Chat, but I felt that it was too important to bury in one of the obscure technology forums, at least for now.

About a week ago I was attacked by two really nasty trojan horse/browser hijackers—about:blank and the aurora/nail.exe malwares. In addition, I already had the Paduaism trojan horse (another nasty one), and some other varmints such as eZula and Sidefind. As a result, using the Internet became almost impossible. As soon as I would open Internet Explorer, as many as 30 pop-up screens would open within a matter of seconds above, below, and around the browser window. Navigating anywhere became a nightmare, and usually the keyboard would freeze or the entire OS would lock up.

Over the course of the past few days, I have spent about 15 hours trying to get rid of these bastards. But despite my best efforts, nothing worked. These new trojan horses are in a league of their own, and the usual tools such as HijackThis, SpyBot, and Ad-aware are unable to do anything about them. I spent three straight days trying everything I could think of to manually remove these scumsucking leeches—I spent hours doing surgery on the Windows registry and combing through the System32 directory looking for any fresh executable code and/or .dll’s that I could find. Everything that was less than a week old went in the Recycle Bin. But nothing worked—as soon as I rebooted they would reincarnate themselves and all the changes I made to the registry were reversed.

However, I made two major breakthroughs—one the day before yesterday and one last night. The first breakthrough was finding a new malware remover called Adware Away. This thing really fucking works! It removed about:blank and aurora effortlessly. It’s about the same price as most of the other malware removers (about $30), but it was fully functional when I downloaded it, so I think it’s good old fashioned shareware—you’re on the honor system in terms of paying for it. It may have a time limit though—their web page doesn’t really make this clear. I’m going to write to them and find out, and I’m definitely going to send them a few bucks. As far as I can tell, my system is completely clean. First I ran Adware Away, and then I mopped up with HijackThis, SpyBot, and Ad-aware. All malware appears to be COMPLETELY GONE from my system. Bazooka is still detecting Sidefind, but as far as I can tell it is crippled and inoperative.

The second discovery I made, which is even more fundamental and important, is that all malware is written to run in Internet Explorer. The easiest way to get rid of the problem is just to DUMP INTERNET EXPLORER!!! As soon as I started using Firefox, all of my problems went away. I have been on the Internet for several hours now today, and I have not seen a single pop-up or page redirection. HijackThis can’t find anything on my system, and the only thing SpyBot can find is a few miscellaneous tracking cookies—no big deal. I’M CLEAN. And I’m very happy about it. I’ve got a lot of stuff to do today, but I felt that this was too important to not share with everybody, so I took the time to write this and post it up. Try everything I suggested—I guarantee it will work.

Woohoo! Congrats, Lev! :thumb: Spyware and viruses are a major pain in the ass. Glad you eradicted the nasty shit off your hard drive.

And, thanks for your suggestions. :)

congrats! if you ever need any help with computer related problems, please don't hesitate to pm me.

I had that virus on my computer last summer...aw man I would never forget how stressful it was to get rid of it in so long that I even had an hardware error and had to return it to the store about three times to get it fixed damn...but thankfully, thanks to Mircosoft Windows coming up with an upgrade item "special service pack 2" that would avoid spyware and other viruses since Windows XP is the easiest software that alot of hackers can get into and spread a virus and stuff like that...

all hackers should be shot to death when someone's computer is completely ruined...*sigh* anyway, congrats.

Levonian,

I am on internet explorer too and I have having problems myself with pop-ups such as XXX rates out of blue they kept on popping up from no-where. How do I get rid of the internet explorer and download firefox, If internet explorer came with my windows?

:werd: People who write malware code are the scum of the universe. Last year my wife’s laptop was so infested with the crap that she had to take it to Best Buy to have the hard drive formatted. Cost her $80. I know it’s not ‘politically correct’ to advocate vigilante justice, but I secretly wish that somebody would take a couple of these assholes out and shoot them. Maybe it would scare the rest of them into going out and getting an honest job. What if all the problems I was having had occurred a couple of weeks earlier when I was working on my term papers? It would have really caused problems for me, because even MS Word was acting erratically, even if I didn’t have a browser window open. I was getting pop-ups in my word processor when I wasn’t even on the Internet!

And get all of these:

HijackThis

Ad-aware 6

Bazooka

Spybot

All of these are freeware, and you should be able to find them with a Google search.

The other software I mentioned is $30, but it appears to be fully functional shareware. I haven’t paid for a license yet, but it works fine. You might want to wait on getting it until I can check them out and make sure they’re reputable. Some spyware removers are rip-offs—they don’t work like they’re supposed to, or sometimes they actually install spyware of their own! So give me a couple of days to check these guys out and make sure they’re legit.

people who have Windows XP and/or Internet Explorer MUST install service pack 2 from Mircosoft to avoid future viruses.

*Done* Thanks Steel! You're a lifesafer.

Yup I have been in that shoes hundred of times, Even my brother dont know how to clean spies he always ask me to clean it up for him. Worse one I have encounter was home search assistant, Shopping Wizard, and one more of search engine i cant remember the name. Those would have mess up your aim and other java program in process like if you try access to chatroom, this wont let you do this. IN case if you get those use AboutBuster program to remove it and it works as well.

I dont use IE anymore and yes IE is famous for spies. I know avant is part of IE BUT it doesnt cause any spies at all for the Avant browswer which I am using now. Firefox is okay for me but I prefer Avant over Firefox but both does work better against that insecure IE browser.

Wow. I cannot imagine that you had to deal with the damn problems. I am thinking that we should not get a free IE's new version in the future. This made me think that the company is really a dirty business spying on us again no matter what. It is too late for that because it damaged our computers in the past. I cannot afford my time and my energy to start it over if that happens again.

I checked their FAQ and the only thing it seems to say is:

"How long can I use Adware Away if I don't register it ?
We provide 5 days trial. During 5 days, the trial version has the same functionality as the full version. After 5 days if you want to continue using it, please register it."

So, I assume that you have 5 days time to try it out.

Congrats, Lev ! Make sure to feed your computer some sweet bananas to keep it alive without mold. LOL

Levonian, damn you! I was rooting for these spywares!

Next time, bub... next time.

I was like wow after read your post here because I has the same problem as you. I has trojan horse in my computer. I tried everything with Norton Anti Virus to remove it but it is still not working....

Could you please give me description how to kick trojan horse out of my computer?

wow, I will try Adware Away later and let you know either it´s work or not.

I had to use IE for www.hovrs.com only cuz for some reason it wouldnt work on firefox at all ( no link to "call" or "dial" on firefox for some reason) but other than that i use firefox and i LOVE it especially the fact that it prevents popups very very well and it has so many features for free. I love it. however i still have one stupid trojan virus in my pc that i cant shake free of GRRRRRRRR so im gonna try those u suggested thanks for the tip.

btw i have ALL softwares except for adware away.

Hello, I am also one who hates spyware and those big nose hackers. Tell you this, from my experience those anti-spyware isn't 100% effective. New viruses were created hundred times a day, approximately 10 of them "Workable", those unworkable viruses really messed up omputer by clogging the memory, and hard drive. There is NO easy solution to this stupid problem. Only best solution is run off Solaris on Unix, or AS400. But those computers aren't for you anyway. So, the next solution is get something like Linux then open the source and reprogramming it yourself. That way once you compile them with your OWN source in it. There is NO way hacker can figure out what the *()&^%$%^ source is for this command. On other hand Micro$oft had their source "Locked" meaning you can't see whats in their source code. Problem with this stupid policy of Micro$oft is that there are bound to have some ex employees or contractor with Micro$oft that hold grudge against them and know few lines of codes, then either way create virus though that code, or pass along to hacker with that source code. Real problem to this clever hacker's method is that VIRTUALLY all computer that runs Micro$oft windows and DOS have SAME source!!!! That is why sometimes Micro$oft have to pass free patch to cancel that source and rewrite the source into something else. So, you see why "Locked" source isn't working, only in favor for Micro$oft's bank account.

Foxfire isn't 100% foolproof, and DOES have its own share of bugs.

Anyway, I rarely have problem with pop ups on my PC. That is because of my common sense and keep my computer clean all the time, this includes clear up cookies. Don't "Buy" free software, or program because almost always there is adware built in there in exchange for "Freebies". The famous built in adware free software is weatherbug!!!! Trust me, they contains malacious spyware in there without your knowledge. I stay away from these a$$hole weather website.

Those who thinks Micro$oft is downright greedy... I am behind ya all!

Way to go Lev!!

I have alot of spywares on my computer too, and Roadrunner got some help from Vampy on how to removed those spywares from our computer, but it seem it keeps coming back every time we get those spywares out from our system...It cause the computer resource to go very low, and it makes the computer to run very slow....

Looks like we would need to do more on this to keep those spywares from coming back again and again....

Roadrunner did download firefox on this computer, but I still have Internet Explorer which I keep getting those pop up junk...

I will admit I'm not good when it comes to computers, or how to solved it either....
