Interpreting for a course World Religion

Any interpreters ever interpret a world religion class? If so, what do they discuss? Do you use your own signs for certain technical words (agreed with the client) , and is it difficult to interpret?


NOTE: This is strictly for interpreting purposes not interjecting one's religious practice for debates :ty:.
 
I haven't interpreted a world's religions class specifically but I have interpreted college courses where information about various religions was included in the lectures.

If you know signs used for world history, that covers a lot of the vocabulary. There are websites that include signs for religion in general and for specific religions. Names of religion founders can be abbreviated by using initials if they don't have well-known sign names. You really shouldn't need to create any signs for that subject.

The terp should do the research before class in order to use the correct sign for the specific religion. For example, the sign for BAPTIZE is different for Catholics, Protestants, Baptists, and Orthodox churches. The concept for each is different, so be sure to use the right one.

I'm not a terp - but I am Deaf and taking world religions right now! With me we use a combination of signs we set up and agree on and existing signs that we know about already. It works for me!

I'm curious--which words did you have to create signs for?

The ones that we didn't know the signs for:giggle: Some Jewish terms mostly. We also try to avoid finger spelling with me. I have low vision and a lot of finger spelling is really hard for me. For my classes we may set up more signs than they would with another student.

We seem to be going over different major religions and the various beliefs, sacred texts, historical information, the development of the religion, etc.

That remind me when I had my herpetology symposia... professors were wondering why I wanted to borrow their textbooks. Lots of things had to be fingerspelled if we didn't go over what each of the scientific terms means.

Can you give me examples of which Jewish terms you didn't know the signs for?

How about some of the other terms? Many of them do have established signs.
 
Thanks Reba! I was wondering about Islam and Buddhism. Although it does make me wonder about Daoism and Neopaganism as well... Think Zoroastrianism and Jainism were two other big topics that were brought up in my History and Religious Studies classes... albeit a bit too late now.

There was a lot we didn't know. I can't think of specific examples right now. I know many do have established signs but when we are in class, it comes up and none of us know we just establish something right then and there.

Hellenization is an example of one term...
 
Aw, damn. You're fast on the edit... I saw it, but it didn't show up after I quoted. Was going to make a joke about becoming a geek.

Thanks :) I am sure , there are technical terms for that class.
