Interesting thing about hearing people and chirping fire alarm

When I visited my hearing co-worker's home to fix things and help him move stuff in past. Every visit I made to his home, I kept hearing intermitted chirping sound (every 1 or 2 min) constantly. I asked him if he can hear chirps from fire alarm. He said nope and even asked his wife, same thing. It struck me odd that I can hear so clearly cuz I was wearing CI. It had been chirping for a year and never got it's battery replaced regardless I told him he need to do that.

So did I visited other hearing's home and I can hear it chirp too. I asked them if they heard fire alarm chirping. They didn't recognized it at first but eventually they finally recognize chirps from fire alarm. They apologized me that they were numb on fire alarm chirps. They replaced batteries and on my next visit, it was quiet. :giggle:

It is very interesting that hearing people have ways to block off sounds and don't recognize it for long time till someone from outside comes in and recognize it quickly.

Have you ever had this before with your HA or CI when hearing people just "tuned out" sound that had been around for long while?

Mind if I put my two cents here too since I'm a hearie?

All I can say is that this once happened to me at a friend's place. It was weird because apparently I was the only one hearing the chirping sounds even though I wasn't the only hearing person in the room; e.g. my boyfriend was there too :shrug:

It was weird since my friends thought I was going nuts hearing sounds :giggle:

I insisted, they checked and it turned out that their battery of the fire alarm needed to be replaced...

I still don't know why the other hearing people, who actually didn't live there, didn't hear it either... that always remained bizarre to me but I can understand why people living there could not hear it. Eventually you're just fading out the sounds or something...

If I not mistaken that chirpping means to change battery on the alarm. It drives me nuts when I visit my dad, he let it go for a very long time and finally changed the battery. My dad has a hearing loss but he don't sign.
 
Yes most of the time when the battery of the alarm needs to get changed the beeping sound has an interval of about 1 to 2 minutes, just like Catty mentionned. :D

Yea, Alkline batteries usually every yearly changes, so I have Hi-Tech Lititum batteries, it's last longer than a year.. right now it's 2nd year now.. when the batteries dieing down, I wll get new Hi-Tech Lititum batteries and let the my apt maintenance to replace it that I can't reach up there cuz in the wheelchair..
 
high-pitched sounds are a problem for me. I would never know that the fire alarms or smoke alarms are chirping - they're too high-pitched. But a few months ago my SO was over and could hear one of the fire alarms chirping. I have a really big house with many smoke alarms, so we had to go room by room until he could identify which one was chirping. Once he figured that out I replaced that battery pronto.
 
I've done the same thing before. If I hear something over and over, but think it's normal... I eventually forget it existed.

I did the same thing with the smoke detectors. When I was living at my old apartment years ago, I kept hearing that beeping. One day, the landlord came by and replaced the batteries. Suddenly, it was quiet. That's when I realized that the frequent beeping meant it needed to have its batteries replaced. :)
 
I have heard chirping sounds of an alarm before.

That reminds me.. Don't they recommend you to change the battery each time change? Twice a year.

Soon it will be Spring Ahead. So will be time for me to change batteries.
 
Yep you need to have your smoke alarm batteries changed when the time changes, or every 6 months at the least.
 
high pitching beeping sounds, drives me insane! our carbon monoxide detector was always beeping after a few months due to needing new batteries, oy! was annoying.

I wish they had 2nd LED (light emitting diode) to tell you if battery is low. So it won't be a hassle to track and pinpoint one chirpers!!

It's a real big problem when you have a "interconnected" system which fire alarm hardwired to another fire alarm and all or some have battery for backup in case power failure. If one alarm goes off, All will go off same time.. For example, I have 7 fire alarm system in my home. If one alarm battery run low, then All alarm would chirps same time. It's really annoying when you replace fresh battery on one by one until you got the last one shut up!!

Right now, I finally have 4 Strobe fire alarms (All are of BRK Electronics brand along with non-strobes of similar brand). It lessened my headache not to replace all 7, I only need to replace 3 batteries then I had to press strobe alarm to test in order to shut up chirping cuz it's buddy had battery changed and it still want to be tested!! :rofl:

My kids too tuned their ear off on chirping alarm. When I put on my CI after 4 days without CI, I heard it chirps. I asked my kids, did you hear fire alarm chirping? They said umh then stood still and wait and heard (chirp) , yes, Daddy, it had been going on for 3 days. 3 Days!! sheesh next time let me know if that thing bothers you! :rofl:

Wow, I did not know that there is a chirping in the smoke detector. I am so Deaf that I did not know that the chirping means to change the batteries. Sometimes I see my husband or someone saying it is time to change the batteries but never mention about the chirping at all to me. Interesting. Thank you for giving me the insight what the chirping mean to change batteries in the fire alarm or smoke detector. So that means to change the batteries every six months or twice a year. Right? :hmm:
 
Oh I have heard that chirping noise and it is really annoyed me alot. I had to hurry and changed that darmn batteries. GRRRRRRRRRRRRR Shut up!!!! LOL

Yeah, that would be nice.

I do know that some alarm clocks have one LED light, but it blinks differently when its battery needs to be replaced.

It's kinda like my digital clock/thermometer. It lights up randomly or when you touch it. However, if it lights up repeatedly non-stop... then that means the battery is low and I need to replace it.
 
My dog goes nuts when he hears the low-battery chirp. The first time, it took me a while to figure out what he was barking at. I wonder if other peoples' dogs try to let them know about the chirping?
 
Did anyone remember to change batteries in their alarms? :) Since today is the official time change day. :)
