What influenced you guys to chose your careers and why?

Right now I work for Purple Communications Inc, and loving it. Business is good and all but that's not what my career will be. I am tech-savy so I will go to networking on that on as my career.

After working at several office jobs, I realized that sitting in front of a computer all day wasnt my style and at that time my brother and his deaf classmates graduated with a 4th grade reading level. I didnt understand why that was happening as I loved to read so I volunteered at his Deaf school even though I didnt know any sign language at the time and saw that there was almost something different at work daily. So, I pursued my teaching career to try to understand why many deaf children were graduating with low reading levels.

Still Student at College .. Undecided> What is in future career for me? :hmm:

I went from being a journalism/mass comm major to education to medical transcription and finally to social work.

I stupidly quit journalism because I believed someone who said I couldn't be a field reporter due to my blindness.

I had to quit my major in education and medical transcription because of my hearing loss.

With the former, I couldn't hear my students well enough when student teaching and with the latter, it was a matter of life or death.

If I accidentally transcribed 50mg when someone only needed 15mg, that can open me up for all kinds of liability issues. It's too bad because I really enjoyed that major and was earning a 4.0 GPA. The good part about it though was the fact that I learned alot about meds and was informed when I started medication for my bipolar and other conditions.

I finally settled on social work and feel it's a perfect fit for me. I can do just about anything in this field and can work with a diverse population.

Once I earn my Bachelor's in social work, I plan to continue with a Master's in psychology and an MD in psychiatry.

My goal is to open my own practice and work with sighted-hearing clients who have various mental illnesses including the Deaf and deafblind who use ASL and tactile sign given the severe shortage of psychiatrists and therapists who sign.

Just awesome!

well I exaclty don't have a career but working in retail store wasn't my thing to start with but hell.. at least it beats being lazy bum and being in bed all day :P I believe some people can focus on what they want to accomplish and stay on track not fall off track and be laid off but looking at ecomony it is bad right now so I will just stay where I am working til things get better... since life is short so go live to the fullest ;)

Not sure yet, I was used to be very interested into Japanese language, and the Photography, but I was not interested into them right now anymore for some reason, and am still watching what exactly I wanted. I probably would be interested into something like Architecture, City planning, or something, but I couldn't afford to go to college till I become 24 so..

my childcare course ends next week but Im starting to realise that I dont really want to do this so I am considering other options

stop mocking my career choice!

I dont have a career yet, but what influenced me to want to be an educator in a deaf school was so that I can give a deaf a child a fair chance at success along with his/her hearing peers. I believe in every way that a deaf student can succeed at the same things that hearing learners can do they just need the material and information presented to them in a way that they understand.
