You say if that doctor doesn't help you feel better and feel Worse?

Have you talk to your parent about get another doctor?

Do you know french language?

Travis,

As you've mentioned before, you have bipolar disorder which is a lifelong condition that requires medication. If bipolar is left untreated, it can lead to progressively worse manic episodes as one ages.

Please stay on your meds. If you feel that they are not helping you, let your psychiatrist know. He or she can try other medications that may work better. I had to try a different medication in 1991 to treat severe depression and it worked much better than the first medication I was given.

Also keep in mind that stopping your medication immediately can be dangerous. If I remember correctly, you are taking divalproex sodium (Depakote) which is an anti-convulsant. If you stop taking anti-convulsants without being weaned off of them, you can risk having a seizure. Please talk to your psychiatrist before you do anything.

If you are not happy with your psychiatrist, you have a right to see another. I had to switch psychiatrists because the one I had wasn't treating my bipolar. I'm now working with a wonderful psychiatrist who listens to me and addresses my symptoms immediately.

Again, I cannot stress enough the importance of talking to your psychiatrist and staying on your medications.

Travis,

I'm so glad to hear that you will continue your medication. Divalproex is a good medication. I take it for my bipolar as well. I've been taking it for the past 3 years.

I would encourage you again to talk to your psychiatrist if you have any questions about your medications.

Travis,

You've known your family doctor for 4 or 5 years? That's great. I hope you are able to schedule an appointment with him soon to discuss your exhaustion. Perhaps he can give you a temporary sleep medication so that your sleep patterns can return to normal. I have difficulty sleeping myself especially several days before or during a manic or mixed episode. Please take care of yourself and let us know how your appointment with the doctor goes. Good luck! :)

Travis,

Is Dr. Karpinski your psychiatrist?

Antipsychotics like Seroquel can and do cause weight gain. I'm on an antipsychotic myself (Risperdal). When I started taking it 2 years ago, I ended up gaining 30 pounds. I was also on Depakote at the time, so that was a contributing factor as well.

I'm now on 5 meds for my bipolar and 3 of them cause weight gain. I'm still holding at 114 pounds, but am trying to exercise and watch my diet so that I don't end up gaining too much weight.

Travis, sometimes it's better to gain a bit of weight and to have peace of mind. Hang in there.

Dear Travis,

I have anxiety attacks too. I used to get panic attacks very easily until I started Effexor and it helps me a lot. Before I took Effexor, I couldn't go out to crowded malls or do grocery shopping because I would feel tight around my chest.

My chest would feel tight & hard to breathe and I would sweat a lot. I stayed home a lot and Aghori [my husband] did grocery shopping, laundry and other things for me. I was happy staying home but it became boring for me. I knew I had to go out but how? I saw my doctor and he gave me Effexor. I went out slowly but still panic. The doctor told me to give Effexor 6 weeks to work and it did. It worked a month after and I started to notice no more tight around my chest. No more sweating and no more hard breathing.

I've been on Effexor over a year now and I love going out all the time. I don't worry about crowded places anymore!

Ohhhh yes, Aghori [my husband] always tells me to go first and he follows behind me. Why? He knows the people will make room for me when they hear my white cane on the ground! :giggle:

Smile Travis, hang in there. Everyone here supports you and keep positive, ok. HUGS!

Travis,

I have anxiety that is related to my PTSD flasbacks. Whenever I hear certain sounds, it triggers a flashback which in turns causes me a great deal of anxiety. I take Prozac for my bipolar depression, but I also find that it helps reduce my anxiety as well. I also take Klonopin to control my rapid cycling and it too helps my anxiety. You may want to ask your psychiatrist if he or she can put you on an anti-anxiety med so you can calm down when you're having an attack. It's worth considering and may bring you some well deserved relief.
