Hurricane Katrina

I went down to the South last week. I was shocked that it has not showed any improvements since my last visit in December.

Houses, condos, apartments and businesses are still empty. Very few has reoponed. It is still like a war zone there.

Visiting New Orleans was sad. NO is " soul " of America but it has been silenced there. It does not have that festive air anymore. Silence beckons everywhere.

What I dont understand is that why Bush is not helping down there but sitting away in Oval Room, trying to siphon more money for the war in Iraq. Why cant he take better care of our own citizens???!

I really feel for these citizens of New Orleans and Mississippi Coast. It was so depressing there. Hurricane season will begin June 1 and I cant imagine them being ready for yet another horrible hurricane season. They say that they expect 17 storms, which 3 will be major. What if it hits the devastated area this year?

Thanks for letting me rant and rave. These folks need your helpa nd prayers. Dont forget them. The nightmare is still there and the rest of the country seems to have moved on, forgetting that there are still thousands of victims there :(

Bush dont care about nothing but war.

In my humble opinion, he should be impeached period for all these unspeakable crimes he has done against our own citizens on many different situations, not just this situation.

I do realize that state/city/county government should help too in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina but they simply dont have money or manpower to really help push for improvements and get the region ready for 2006 Hurricane Season.

Geez, I wish these hurricanes were NEVER invented sigh...

That's too depressing to think about these hurricane damages
down there I heard there will have many more hurricanes
for another 8 more years. Sigh.

It was pretty embrassassing when I heard there isn't even enough food and water to deliver to the citizens in new orleans even thou we are supposed to be considered the richest and most powerful nation of the world but thanks to Bush, he've wasted trillions of dollars to the war, sending home hundreds of crippled and/or dead soliders each month from the middle east all just because Bush is pissed off at Saddam for threatening his "daddy" years ago and planned the 9/11th attacks to make them look innocent and get Saddam out of the way when we didnt even hear about Saddam in the first place after 9/11th! sure Saddam is our enemy, but I dont think he has anything to do with the 9/11th attacks and isn't even friends with bin laden...in fact they are enemies because Saddam wanted to take over Afghangistan when bin laden tried to hire as much men to stop them from invading their country...everything is ALWAYS about land...but then again today, it's also about money, oil, and POWER.

bush is obvioulsy the most famous and biggest liar in American history, making pack of lies to his own citizens when he said they would catch bin laden but it've been almost 6 years now and saddam is already in an high tech prison and in court, but the war STILL isn't over! because bush doesn't understand ANYTHING!

you CAN'T kill all of the terrorists to get rid of all the terrorists because more will keep coming and coming for the taste of revenge! bush is fucking pathetic. no wonder he's president just because of his "daddy" and he's way more stupid than his father was.

It is interesting to me that everybody forgets that there is a city, local (county or parish in this case) and state gov't that also (besides the Federal gov't) has an interest in New Orleans. Er...where are they? I guess it is very convenient to blame just one person instead of the whole chain of command. Since the disaster, it has become obvious that everybody from the president downward made an absolute mess of the situation. All politicians of all stripes have a vested interested in blaming somebody else for their inadequacies or incompetence. It is natural as breathing and explains why politicians aren't Americans most favorite people.

This was a hugh disaster (really unprecedented) of the likes that America was just not prepared for in many respects. It was understood intellectually that things like this could happen but the reality is very different. It will take a long time for this city to recover if ever. There is still a lot of questions that need to be answered to see if it truly practical to rebuild this city. Personally, I believe it insane to bother as another massive hurricane will hit it again sometime down the road and the city is just not suited to survive them. Also, the Mississippi river is sort of tame but it is still a river with a mind of its own.

For some of the reasons why this is taking so long is that a lot of the people who left aren't coming back because they don't want to deal with this again (who can blame them?). If the people who had a home there but aren't coming back, er...what is the gov't to do? Rebuild it anyway? They are going to have to track each and every homesite and try to find the people and see what they want to do. If the entire neighborhood is condemned due to pollution or whatever, then you are going to see blighted places like this as it is the last place to be bothered with as there is no pressing need. Probably, downtown and neighborhoods that have people interested will be the ones to come back. The city will probably never be the same and that is okay. History is replete with similar examples.

What happens if they decide to rebuild the houses, apartments, businesses etc, and then later another hurricane decide to hit the same area, are they going to keep rebuilding it ?... :dunno:

Don't they have insurances?...Why is it Bush's job to fix the problem?...

I feel bad for those who experienced hurricane Katrina tragedy lost their homes, lost loved ones and missing families. If there's gotta be more hurricanes in June, I hope that people of Orgeon will decide to leave, because they don't need to live or stay through another disaster. Be safe, get out of there when the warning is call out. ;)

Bush is not responsible for Katrina, and he is not solely responsible for the clean-up. New Orleans KNEW and had been WARNED about the levy system and that it was going to fail....and they did nothing to prevent it. That isn't George Bush' fault...those studies were done long before Bush was in office...so why was New Orleans so shocked when what was predicted came true? Its a 'Oh..it can't happen to us' attitude because NO escaped many hurricanes.

Recently Bush also granted 4.2 billion dollars for the clean-up...but that money will sit. Do you know why? Its because Louisiana and surrounding states are fighting over the money...and it will be tied up in litigation..again, not George Bush' fault.

i second that. so its not bush fault. even million of dollars been donated from all over US.. the money still sits. money donated from american red cross, walmart, target, salvation army, etc etc.. and they keep the money..

I had a feeling that it will take couple more months for them to finally start-up

Even with Hurricane Ivan, it took a LONG time for some people near the coast to even be let back into their homes. I know because I went down there to help out and saw I for myself. If anything is to blame for these things, it is complacency--which you mentioned--and bureaucracy. Bureaucracy is not just one person's fault--it's a whole SYSTEM that's at fault and needs to be fixed. Let's follow Taylor's example and attack PROBLEMS, not PEOPLE.

Interesting phrase...tho hurricanes are way of life because they help change the ecosystem and even improve them...like for example coral reefs. They believe that hurricanes do improve life around the coral reefs after the hurricanes. The people are at fault for building a major city where it's vunerable to hurricanes. I would never want to live where a severe storm or hurricane happens too often and cause major damage. A 100 year storm, I wouldn't mind...but not the occassional storms.

ok, sequoias ... but i do not really understand about
why or what's so important about
these coral reefs ?

Coral Reefs V.S. people and their homes ?

please help me to understand better
with your own words, thanks !

of course, which town in the US have never
hit by any severe storms ?

Extreme Home make over edition already shown up and helping them and expecting they would work do some of areas... To Keep New Orleans ALIVE...

Getum, Yeah I do agreed w/you actually some people make their decision and leaving the state which not safe place to living if suppose future might happends hurriance coming back again..

History stronger has been wiped extact that place and stubborn making building again.. until huge impact wipe it off huge ones... I bet They decide not coming back beacuse of stupid insurance not going pay coverage million houses lost. Insurance already filed the bankrupt to prevent people asking insurance money back and to coverage cost the re-new build.. That sad!

People are gave it up and decide move far away another state and start over again their new leaf as growth new life!
