Yes we were being warned and follow their warning and prepare ourselves. I was sent home an earlier and cancelled doctor appointment and Fitness Studio to stay home with my family and prepare things from garden to garage, etc... My hubby cancel to go work to stay at home with us... A lot of people do that... but I don´t know why the some people ignored the warning... 32 people around Germany are killed. Windstorm is not in some states but the whole around Germany...

You were warned only a few hours ahead. When hurricane warnings are announced, they are several days before the hurrincane hits. Hurricane tracking usually starts one or two weeks before it hits.

We already aware at few weeks ago that the severe weather will come... Accord Sunshinelady´s post in my other thread and accord New TV, the severe weather will come and remind us about the weather in 1990.

My boys told me in breakfast time after listen the radio that the windstorm will start between 4.00 pm and 6.00 pm before I left for work... I told my co-worker what my sons had told me... She said yes... and then got an offical email at around 9.00 pm... this is so... and inform my hubby for preparation. We are asked to leave work place at 2.30 pm to prepare anything... We have no problem for that... We have seen many people prepared things as well with no complaint... We have no complaint, either.

At Katrina, thousands people killed and few people killed around in Germany. I don´t understand why you get shock... :dunno: It takes us only few hours to prepare things... Hurriances can´t whip houses with bricks out... All what we do is stay in the house because we know that hurriances can´t whip the houses with brick away... If house with wood then is bad... they have to stay at someone´s brick house.

Do you mean you had a hurricane Kyrill warning a few weeks ago?

Are you sure it was an actual tropical storm hurricane, with an eye and eye wall? Or was it a storm with hurricane-force winds? Do you have link to the satellite picture? That will clearly show the hurricane formation.

That's what I mean. That's only a few hours warning. Hurricanes always have several days warning.

Most hurricane casualities are from the ocean storm surge and flooding, not wind damage.

Yes, that is sad. It takes many years for forests to grow mature trees. I hope they can make good use of all the lumber from the damaged trees.

We had a strong windstorm here on Dec, too. It caused lot of damage to the houses, uprooted trees, killed some people in the way.

No, I didn´t know the word of Kyrill but Orkan.. I didn´t watch on TV much. I really have no time to watch on TV... but rarely. All what I know is "severe weather" from my co-workers, my hubby (he watch on TV after came home from work at 10.30pm) and boys until that day... my boys told me about windstorm between 4pm and 6pm at breakfast time...

I would say severe windstorm after withnessed from window.. .not form of hurricane like Katrina, etc. in America. I was like Ohhhh when the German media call it hurriance "Orkan"... I aware the form of hurriance what we have is different as in America. I will try to provide the link as what you require.

Yes, image #22 (Wolkenbildung über Europa) is a satellite image of the storm. You can clearly see the difference between a severe storm and a hurricane. The German storm image doesn't have the distinctive organized hurricane "swirl" with defined edges and eye. Hurricane images look more like doughnuts or bagels.

If it is not a hurricane, then what do you call a storm that blows 160 to 200 kph winds, covering almost the whole Germany? It was powerful enough to make a steel beam fall off from the entrance of a recently built and opened Main Railroad Station in Berlin? I don't think that a hurricane has to looke like a swirl to be called a hurricane. The CNN news which is American owned, called it a hurricane that hit Europe.

Because it confuses us. We had many storms hit over 100 mph wind here in America too but they were not caused by hurricane. We do not have name for them but just call it windstorm.

I looked up this website, it says storm kyrill instead of them saying hurricane kyrill. dunno
 
Interesting! There are several ways of calling the name that deals with the "WIND" In America, we called it "Hurricane" I'm so glad that we didn't any hit last year. Knock on wood!! In Pacific area, they either called "Typhoon" or "Cyclone" In your area, Germany or any other European area, you called it "Krill" Where I live in Northeast. We usually get Nor'easter storm. It can be pretty bad with very high wind and heavy downpour rain.

Wikipedia calls it an European Windstorm that generally happens in the winter months. It also refers to the word "orcan" which comes from a Mayan God, Huracan, the origin where the word hurricane came from.

European hurricanes (or windstorms) have different pattern than the typical Cape Verde hurricanes that attacks America every year.

The name "Kyrill" is not the word for hurricane, but a nickname for it. Just like the ones in the USA, it goes in ABC order. Famous names for American hurricanes are Katrina, etc... They are not the words for hurricanes, but names.

So, a hurricane is from warm air, but windstorm like this that happened in Germany was from cold mass mostly.

You do have very strange weather going on over there. Wear shorts one day and winter coat the next day.
